Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

He was foolish from a self-preseveration mode. Offered Berbatov for a few months by Levy, he turned it down saying he didn't need anyone and had it sorted. That deal was 100% on and all it needed was a 'yes'. PERSONALLY, as much as I love Berba I would not have wanted him back for a variety of reasons (namely my own stubbornness!) but I am not the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, and as such, turning down the chance to sign a STRIKER who would probably have netted you at least 5 extra goals with great importance is arrogance and stupidity in one glorious blend.

Hmm, Im not sure about that. He's had an on form Ade, and now Kane stepping up plus Soldado whose all round game has been decent if not in the goals scored column. Berbatov would have been on the bench most of the time, and knowing his attitude would it of been really worth it? I absolutely love the player, but Im with Tim on that one....

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

do bear in mind that Martinez had a pre-season..that shouldnt be overlooked..but yes to answer your question I think Martinez in very savvy and I would love him at the helm...he deserves better than Levy though.

The other thing about Martínez is he has a touch of the Venables factor — players seem to want to play for him and he is able to get something extra out of them as a result.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

This is one of the factors which have ensured Timbo won't be here...

I think that it is pretty clear that he is hot headed and I think that he loses focus in the heat of the moment (not a great characteristic in a football manager). I also think that he has a tendency to play to the gallery which is why the quips keep coming.

Again, personally I don't disagree...but when offered a potential jewel, and when you take the stand that you don't need anything because you've got all you need, you cannot then subsequently unravel and declare that your squad is 'much of muchness' when you potentially had the chance to take a player of world class talent (if not always attitude!) He could've given himself another player, essentially free on a short deal, who would've been 'something of somethingness'...he says what suits his current agenda at all times. One moment he needs nothing and it's a top 4 squad, he knows this because he's been at the club for a long time observing it all, then it's not good enough, not got enough talent in it and is 'much of muchness'...I don't know mate...another of the 'wouldn't buy a used car from him' jobs for me!

Indeed, a fine point and one which his mentor has obviously embossed upon him as being a 'skill'.

I do wonder what would have happened if he had played it straight these last four months. Less histrionics on the sideline, wear a suit and tie and not say anything of interest to the press. I reckon he might have been in with a chance of holding onto the job.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

That's not fair, tims done a decent jobs results wise and should be given credit for it.... Some of the things he has been quoted on though.... Are a little to dicanio esq for me.

I think there is certainly something to what you're saying, and the credit I would personally give him is for his handling of youth and introducing them, which has been great. Bringing Ade back doesn't count for me as Ray Charles could see that needed doing from his grave...but he's worn me down with his persistent bull**** and (as I've said numerous times now) his conduct, which has been the final straw for me personally.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

yes. in just about every way conceivable.

he comes across as a rather loyal type of bloke though so can't see it happening (unless we were to make Everton an offer they couldn't turn down, which is unlikely)

Was talking with a couple of lads who were at Swansea with him recently, and they echoed all we probably all think about Martinez, said he is a top top bloke, has time for everyone, is amazingly focussed and LOVES the game...

Good post mate, certainly can't argue with that....

They talk about Martinez's preparation for games and how he analyses games that his teams have just played, he is incredibly thorough.

I'd say you're on the money there.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

no player tortures me like Berba...I love him as a player but cannot forgive him. But I'll bet I would've found a way ;-)

Haha with him wearing our colours again and those mercurial feet dancing we all would have found a way, even those insisting otherwise would have....no doubting that!

I think you're wondering about an impossibility. Sort of like wondering where Moyes would be now if he had a 100% win rate.

It's Sherwood's character flaws that stop him being able to do that and I don't think they're fixable.

He reminds me of those awful people you see outside a Wetherspoons on a Friday night, able to turn every innocuous comment into a reason to start a fight. They don't have the emotional intelligence to understand why they're angry, they're just angry and letting that anger out in an explosive manner is all they know how to do.

If that is the case why was he made captain at every club he was at?

This is (unfortunately) England - he who shouts loudest makes captain.

A better question would be what are the opinions of Hodgson and Hoddle? Two of those who made him captain.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Kenny Dalglish said:
Tim Sherwood has made a fantastic start as boss of Tottenham Hotspur.

And I cannot say that I am surprised. People have been saying he is not experienced, but Sherwood is not short of wisdom and he is not short of knowledge either.

Is he a man of substance? Well, I wouldn’t have made him captain of Blackburn Rovers if I didn't think so. He was good in the dressing-room, and he was a strong character. People like that carry those qualities with them into management.

He can have a laugh and a joke but he can be a disciplinarian, too. Sherwood is streetwise and he knows about football. That tells me he has got a chance.

That Blackburn team was not short on strong characters. It cannot have been easy to captain them and I would assume that, if all he had was a big gob someone would have decked him.

Good point.
