This Paolo Di Canio Business

Re: O/T Manager Sack Watch

It was an issue but got less press because it would sell less papers/advertising when he was at a smaller club. The GMB withdrew its sponsorship of Swindon when Di Canio was appointed because of his political views.

I find it hard to understand how Spurs fans can try and defend Di Canio's self-professed views in a season when we have seen our fans hospitalised and on the receiving end of anti-Semitic abuse by the far right in Europe.

I guess fascists wont have a problem with a fascist getting a high profile job.
:ross:

The exact same far right with whom Di Canio was reliving the Roman Empire. The nazi salute was to ingratiate himself with the Lazio ultras.

Re: O/T Manager Sack Watch

I agree with the first point in bold above. It's important. Further, it plays into the second point (which is something that I despise -how the words 'communism' and 'socialism' have been totally misinterpreted -purposefully to my mind- by people who simply want to see no form of socially-minded/empathetic government in their society).

Your Nietzsche comment is a whole other discussion; I'd say there were others (such as Marx) who's philosophies have been misappropriated far more.

As for your final comment? Yes, there is a fine line difference between fascism and racism. But you're talking academic definitions. And by your own stipulated dislike of misappropriation, fascism was adopted by racists virtually from the get-go. Thus a modern 'fascist' and 'patriot' is, by the mere stacking of what those terms mean when put together, going to end up harboring some racist ideals (for example, that Italian fascists felt colonizing African nations was justified because of the superior intellect' of the colonizers).

The big question would be why Paulo Di Canio would (with all this wonderful nuanced information) offer a nazi salute not once but several times from pitch-side?
Are we now saying that before we condemn someone for throwing out that insulting gesture that we should discuss whether they are, in fact, non-racist fascists?

Given the fact that we have confirmed that fascism and nazism are related, you'd have to conclude that Paulo Di Canio is naive if he thinks he can exercise his right to offer a 'Nazi-style' salute, state that he believe in Italian fascism and not cop a good deal of flack for it.
The fact he stubbornly refuses to conclusively wipe the slate clean suggests he is either a stubborn idiotic loopy tool or a man of strong principle and moral fibre...I know what I think...

Great post - I honestly believe Di Canio did not do it as a Nazi salute but as a Roman salute - which was a stupid thing to do, because it will not be possible for the salute's meaning to be restored to its original one. It's forever tainted and belongs now only in films of a historical nature.

I believe he made a mistake. People, especially when they're still pretty young, deserve to be forgiven for a mistake and given a second chance.

I am glad he did it though and said he was a fascist because it has caused debate across the internet and wider media and provided a good catalyst for people to discuss events of history and learn things from each other.

If my girlfriend walked past me covered up in a full burqa I wouldnt know who the fudge she was.

Pull your head from your arse and rell it in a bit. There's a good lad.

I spent an hour the other day explaining the concept of irony to my 7 year old nephew. I really can't be bothered to go through it again with you.

Gilzeantoscore... yes, probably best we ignore each other's posts and leave it at that.

That was an hour well spent.

That was an hour well spent.

I'm gonna guess that someone who picks a screen name of the one the greatest anti-heroes in the history of literature probably hasn't had kids yet.

Believe me, the questions never end, especially if you have a clever one.

"What happens if a car is driving along the road and all the wheels fall off?"

"What happens if the wheels then land in a field, hit a sheep and then land in a river?"

An hour later...

"What happens to the airplane that crashed into the spaceship who got distracted by seeing the tyres hit the sheep and land in the river and was worried the fishes might be hurt... would the Sun blow up then?

So from what I gather, he has previously professed his support of fascism. Mussolini's brand of fascism to be precise. Now i'm not up on political ideology enough to know exactly what this entails quite frankly, but according to the media, fascism = racism. Is this an overblown simplification? This also brings me onto a broader question. Should a person's political affiliation prevent him from taking up a position as a football manger? Let's replace PDC with another hypothetical manager who has also previously betrayed fascist leanings, assuming he ticks all the other boxes how would you feel about him taking the top job at spurs?

Why wasnt it this big an issue when he was Swindon manager, its just the media hyping things up to create column inches

i believe that a persons political beliefs should not be held against them (unless they start to persecute people or whatever)

It was an issue for many when he was at Swindon (for example the GMB withdrew its sponsorship of the club) but it got less coverage in the media because they are a smaller club and it wouldn't sell papers/advertising.

As far as I'm aware being a racist and being a fascist are not exclusively hand in hand and only one is deemed as being illegal I'm this country.

Fair enough, looking at how old some of the quotes / stories they are rehashing now, most are from years back

I think that it is a little more complicated than that. A player has been banned for life from playing for Greece for doing exactly what Di Canio did to the Lazio fans (on two occassions) and in some countries in Europe he could have faced going to prison for making that salute.

Fascism (pron.: /ˈfæʃɪzəm/) is a form of radical authoritarian nationalism[1][2] that came to prominence in mid-20th century Europe. Fascists seek to unify their nation through a totalitarian state that promotes the mass mobilization of the national community,[3][4] relying on a vanguard party to initiate a revolution to organize the nation on fascist principles.[5] Hostile to liberal democracy, socialism, and communism, fascist movements share certain common features, including the veneration of the state, a devotion to a strong leader, and an emphasis on ultranationalism, ethnocentrism, and militarism. Fascism views political violence, war, and imperialism as a means to achieve national rejuvenation[3][6][7][8] and asserts that "superior" nations and races should attain living space by displacing weak and inferior ones.[9]

Not intrinsicly racist but very close.

I don't think he's a proven enough manager to take the spurs job.

His political issues are his own. fudge that. Freedom of thought.

ah but we aren't talking about him making the salute really are we, we're talking about the fact he is admittedly a 'facist'

id expect that if he started doing the salute to Sunderland fans when entering the dugout he'd , quite rightly, get in to a bit of bother about it. but this is years a go now that he done this salute to the Lazio fans and i don't see the point in holding it against the man.

If only fascists agreed with that when it came to other peoples political views
