The transfer thread

Is naturally fixed by having a bigger PL squad which allows fresher players in both competitions.
I don't think that's a good fix unless we have a shed load of money to throw at the problem. Like Chelsea have been trying to do.

Where we are we have to be really good at player development. The EL is great for giving players those games. But we also need our best players available for those games to be able to secure progression.

Having a bloated squad isn't good for player development or recruitment.

Having several players not registered for a competition with a lot of games also severely limits the manager's flexibility to deal with injuries and we won't know where we'll need the squad the most (which roles/positions). Just look at the headaches from having just Spence not registered.

I think we're doing a lot of things right (not in a moral sense, but the correct strategy for us). But that has left us short here and now.

What we need is fresh players, played who aren’t broken from the previous game
That’s how you manage the squad but because we have some players who are just never fit in the squad and of course the legacy issue of not bringing through youth its escalated

It's a great fix. Our squad is anything but bloated (as is being shown by the options on our bench at the moment).

Having a few experienced players not registered for the first section of the Europa League could've meant that some players stayed fresh for the league, while others stayed fresh for the Cup games, with other players rotated.

I would've thought it was unusual for a big club also playing in Europe and hoping (expecting?) to do to well in the domestic cups to go into the season without using their entire squad allowance. Especially so for the big clubs to be under their overseas player quotas.

Don't think the European squad will matter next season.
I would be more than happy for us to sacrifice our league position and prioritise the three cups (as long as we don't end up relegated). If we win a trophy then we're back in Europe next year anyway and if we miss out on a trophy then a year outside of European competition would likely mean that we could have a decent go at a high finish in the league next season instead.

Adding a few (2-3?) experienced first level type players probably would have cost something in the region of 40-60m?

If we had that kind of money to spend on top of what we already spent this summer I would rather have put that towards one really good player personally. Or signed a much better player than Werner.

I don't think we had that kind of extra money to spend. Assuming we didn't would you rather have signed those experienced players than Odobert and Gray?

2-3 more signings with no outgoings would have left our squad bloated imo. Meant that players like Bergvall and Gray would be fairly consistently left out of PL match day squads outside of injury crisis situations. Would we even have been able to attract them as signings given that plan?

Our problem isn't that we have too few players imo. The problem is that some of those squad players aren't yet (seen to be) ready for real involvement in the PL. The fix is to get them ready for that, even if that takes a bit of time.

I would be happy with that too if we're far enough in any given cup competition. Wouldn't want that at this stage of the EL or early stages of the FA Cup.

League Cup we're getting to the point where big teams start taking it seriously. I think we should too. Will be interesting to see what Ange prioritises come the quarter final game.

Think if we were to finish outside European places next season then we would be loaning out a hell of a lot of young players for league experience. Not saying that would be a bad thing.

Bergval needs a season in the championship without to much pressure on him, same goes for the Croatian defender and the kid coming over from Korea. Not to mention Scarlett, Phillips, Devine and Lankyshear.

The sort of world class players our fans want, ones who never have a bad game and can guarantee we win every game, anybody else are just mercenaries or cheap Levy buys. Whatever happens in transfer window at least 50% wont like it and by end of season it will be 90% if we dont win something or qualify for CL.
So Kane and Son are not / were not world class? They have had lots of bad games.

Cheatski have a bloated squad and (I believe) they are using different players in different comps and it is working out fine for them.
For instance, we are playing Bentancur in Europe and Biss in PL.
Likewise, if we didn't make Porro/Romero/VdV/Udogie play every minute of every game until they explode, they would have coped better and Spence/Radu/Davies/Gray would also have benefitted.

Chelsea have extreme numbers TBF
But it’s exactly how they have managed it and it’s benefited their league form

As this is the transfer thread.... what happened to all those players we chased in recent years?
I'm thinking of....erm....
Chiesa at Liverpool
Daka, the striker that went to Leicester
The Brighton wingback Nii Lamptey
The Norwich right back Max Aarons

Any others I've forgotten
One I really wanted … the gift that stopped given … Gift Orban

And I’ll throw in someone it think we should look at although the guys form the Extra ai were bigging him up so I’m not sure …
Stokes keeper Victor Johanson
I did say about him a couple of months ago as he is HG, young, brilliant shot stopper and Stoke would sell
He is also the profile that you keep for a couple of years and use in cups then sell for double the money
He plays for Sweden
