The transfer thread

The way I see it is that players don't join Spurs to be told that they won't be named in one of the competition squads. As an example, there is absolutely no way Spence will tolerate it for long despite the new contract. He sees a massively depleted squad and yet has managed 109 mins on the pitch this entire season. He knows he would have been way more relevant if he was able to play in the EL. In his mind he would be getting more PL time as he would be impressing his manager. We really don't need 4 or 5 of that. It will kill the culture that is building.

Archie Gray signed for us over Brentford because we said we would play him in midfield …. And haven’t played him there for more than 10 mins

As this is the transfer thread.... what happened to all those players we chased in recent years?
I'm thinking of....erm....
Chiesa at Liverpool
Daka, the striker that went to Leicester
The Brighton wingback Nii Lamptey
The Norwich right back Max Aarons

Any others I've forgotten
I was calling for us to sing Lewis-Potter when he was in the championship, not been a failure but not as good as I thought he would be.

Also wanted to sign Toney a couple of years ago and turned out to be a d*ckhead.

And I’ll throw in someone it think we should look at although the guys form the Extra ai were bigging him up so I’m not sure …
Stokes keeper Victor Johanson
I did say about him a couple of months ago as he is HG, young, brilliant shot stopper and Stoke would sell
He is also the profile that you keep for a couple of years and use in cups then sell for double the money
He plays for Sweden
We would have more Swedes then an allotment.

I thank you!!!!!!

You mean like we made Kane think we'd continue to be ambitious when he signed that 6 year contract (and made him think he had a "Gentelman's agreement" that he could leave if we weren't actually ambitious?)

:D

Yeah, what happened to Chiesa? Hasn't gotten a single game for Liverpool. Daka banged in goals in Germany, still at Leicester, but only 15 goals in 75 games. Aarons is at Bournemouth is he not? Lamptey looked class, but seems to be very injury prone. Gift Orban seems to have plummeted, so potentially a bullet dodged there.

Right on cue...

Gray is 18, Spence is 24.

Just like with KWP and Japhet, you need to be playing football at 24, not ticking a homegrown box in a quota system. At 18, you have time on your side but need to keep an eye on your 1st team on-pitch involvements.

Not sure why you have put the tow together there
For me both are being misused or under utilised and the manager has lost some credit with me because of it

Yeah, only because the flow of the conversation above came from my comments on Spence. You added Gray into the context.

What you say is interesting about Gray's position. Is he happy because the manager is letting him learn by playing different positions and giving him minutes? Is he unhappy because he's not in midfield? Even if he was in the 6 position, would he be unhappy because he thinks he's an 8?

I don't know actually. I think he would just be happy at 18 just to be involved. Over time he'll become less happy though if he doesn't get to play in his best position.

He's 18. We don't know his best position yet. Last season he played mostly as rb. Keeping spence out of the team while doing so.

Cheatski have a bloated squad and (I believe) they are using different players in different comps and it is working out fine for them.
For instance, we are playing Bentancur in Europe and Biss in PL.
Likewise, if we didn't make Porro/Romero/VdV/Udogie play every minute of every game until they explode, they would have coped better and Spence/Radu/Davies/Gray would also have benefitted.
It's fine if you can afford it.

Apart from the obvious financial cost of signing and paying that many players I think there's a cost with regards to player development and player recruitment.

If you can just throw money at the problem and mitigate those costs that way it's fine. We're not in a position to do that imo.

What I know is that had any of them gone on to be great it would have been Levy's fault for not signing them.

Has played 90 minutes against Galatasaray, Roma and against City in the league cup.

That's a step up from the Championship and he's done well. Good going for an 18 year old, even a very talented one as him.

And that's in his first months at the club with the competition in midfield being Bissouma, Bentancur, Sarr, Kulusevski and Maddison.

I don't really see any way Gray would be unhappy about that.

Subtly, what you say is not good for Spence. We know the history. Luke Ayling gets a bad injury so we loan them Spence. Then the newest Gray cements the RB slot whilst playing some games at 6 and 8 for them. Spence does also play a handful of games, but at LB for them from what I remember.

However, Ange can only ever put 20 men in a match day squad. If Porro continues as the first choice, then it's so much more logical to have Gray in the squad than Spence. It's not visible at the moment as we have injuries and are not quota'd with 5 specialist centre backs and 4 specialist full-backs. Next season, when we might be, Spence might cut a lonely figure and be wondering why he signed a new deal. He'll be 25 years old with less than 20 appearances in the PL.

Alternatively, Spence might get a chance through injury and never look back.

I would be very unhappy if i thought ANY player [ especially one who is still a kid] is sulking, moaning about not playing in his prefered posistion. As you say i would think he is just happy to be used in any posistion and there is no more to it then that. Mountains out of Molehills.

The only caveat is what happened to Emerson. We constantly played him out of position and then all declared he was the worst player ever to play for the club. Thing is, if he'd have had the opportunity to make all his appearances at RB, the narrative would have been way less brutal.

Archie will hopefully enjoy these different positions.

Good point but Emerson was few years older then Grey and probably a bit more mature. Gray is still a kid and at his age still learning about adapting to a different posistions at a higher level of the game.
