The transfer thread

I could happily live with that.
Until he comes under the spotlight here, after the honeymoon period and there is the traditional realisation from fans that Frank isn't perfect and isn't magically getting us challenging for the title whilst playing beautiful football.

Another season is given just to be sure, before the majority of fans are very much 'Frank out' which Levy can't ignore, and then we begin the wonderful pointless merry go round all over again.....

Everyone is under scrutiny but the fear of levy being ousted is not even worth thinking as the only alternative apparently is an oil state, US owners who know nothing or some dodgy bloke.

If we have clarity on who will be our 6/DM target come the summer that's the one I'd like to see prioritised in January.

Make a decision on Bissouma and Bentancur, keep one try to sell the other and get whoever we'd want to get in the summer in the door a bit quicker if possible.

Even if that player isn't a ready made top level player a different option that fits a the system would be really useful imo.

For me this team is screaming out for a deep playmaker with press resistance and a better passing game than Bissouma has and more awareness than Bentancur has.

It's Gray.

How many years before it's gray though and will he ever be that player at the level we require? He's a very promising talent but it's far from a guarantee that he's actually going to hit the level we need.
Thats why we have Biss and Bentancur medium term, to let him grow into the role.

Ange said back in september that the scouting advice was that there was no obvious short term upgrade, so we backed a long term solution instead. The same as with Vuskovic and LCB.

There's Hall and Abbott too, so we're hedging our bets.

This season is showing why we cant move forwards without a decent proportion of HG and CT players in our squad.

Time will tell. It's not him yet at least.

I don't think having another 6 instead of either Bissouma or Bentancur would hamper his development.

Meanwhile not having a tempo setting or playmaking DM is imo definitely hampering us as a team.

I think we got the option for Cardose because we see a need for further movement in that position at some point.

My point is more that we won't get a better 6 than Biss or Bentancur. Not for the way Ange wants to play. That player, in our range, doesn't exist at the moment. That's why we went for Gray instead.

Personally I'd give both 2 year extensions and use that to manage Gray's emergence.

I think we don't necessarily need someone "better" as such, but better as in being a better fit for the system and role, and in having more of the qualities we otherwise lack in the team.

Even someone a bit worse defensively, but better on the ball and more of a playmaker and natural deep playmaker could imo improve us. Could then play with Sarr or whoever is left if Bissouma and Bentancur if what we need is more playmaking. Or we could have a more defensive setup if need be.

Right now our only option to gain more control on the ball (and of the game) in midfield is either dropping Maddison deep, or... What's the other option?

I think one older more experienced player (Bissouma/Bentancur) along with one younger but with some experience (like Cardoso, don't actually know if he's good enough) and one very young player who can also play other roles (Gray) makes for a good mix and a imo would make for a good place for Gray to develop.

There are always options out there. The obvious one is Ederson. Whether we can attract him to come here or pay the fee that would release him is another question but the quality is out there. It's more a question of whether we think such a move makes sense financially with Gray in the plans.
