The transfer thread

Challenge for me is I think we could do with a senior player or two added, not sure it's at CB

You would have to find the magical unicorn of an older CB that still has pace, a slow CB is going to die in our system (see Dier)

Problem is, we don't even have 2 fit senior centre halves now and the one that might come back (VDV) soon is a constant injury concern.

Perhaps Phillips plugs the gap. I was also pleased to see Dorrington in that squad tonight. You just know that Ange wouldn't even give him 5 mins though to break the duck. Exactly the same as last season. The other problem of course is that Phillips hasn't completed 2 season so will have to be named in the EL squad at the expense of another player.

CB only seems like a priority because we have three injuries there at the same time.

Other roles are way more important imo.

Mbuemo is brilliant
Younger than people realise too
Wissa is quality too
Always rates bowen. Looked a top player at Hull

Mbuemo is really good, just looked him up and got 9 PL goals each in the last 2 seasons and already on 9 this season. Could easily end up on 15-20 and only 25. Feels like he's just coming into his prime, if he carries on his form for the rest of the season I can see him moving for big money in the summer.

Pace helps our system but Davies looked good against City for instance, if they're positionally aware and disciplined they can do a job on a short term basis. Older pacy CBs available on loan are few and far between.

Fully agreed. Awareness, positioning, decision making are vital. Pace can help players get away with not being as good at those things in this system. Not being outright slow is probably a requirement, but not being really pacey is not.

Ange quickly got rid of Davinson and has stuck with Davies and rightly so imo.

I'd be surprised if a new backup CB was a priority in January.

I'd have thought a new LB who can also play LCB would be priority number one...then another RB if Spence, really isn't going to play at al...we can't keep flogging Udogie and Porro in this high-octane (headless chicken?) system...

Don't think a LB/LCB hybrid that's good enough is likely, just not a lot of them out there.

For me new full back, either side, primarily left sided. DM/6. Creative and dribbly winger. All more important than another/new CB. 6/DM would top my list if a player of sufficient quality can be signed.

Hincapie is one LCB/LB hybrid that has been mentioned in the past.

I'd be quite happy to muddle along with the rest of this squad and just make just one signature signing in January. It's centre half, centre mid of left back for me.

The problem is that the two roles in this Ange team seem to be very different. One of the reasons why Lloyd Kelly would've been such a sensible signing in the summer on a free transfer was because he has/can play as a left back in a 4 or a left sided centre back in a 2 or a 3. Annoying that we lost out to Saudi Sportswashing Machine.

An under the radar type of signing for a defensive midfield player could be AO Tanaka from Leeds. Whenever I've seen their championship games I have been incredibly impressed with him. He is positionally sound, mobile, wins loads of the ball and passes well. I'm surprised he wasn't on Ange's radar considering his history with Japanese players. He is also a CA Base client so at an agency where we have great relations.

I like the fact that he has already proven that he can handle the physicality of English football at Leeds (albeit at Championship level).

If looking to the championship for a left footed central defender I like what I've seen of Maxine Esteve at Burnley. A tall rangy, player who is quite physical, good in the air, has decent control and has an OK level of pace. He is one of those players who seems to be good at spotting danger and taking up the right position to put out the fire. He is only 22 and doing well at Burnley. I think he will end up a decent premier league defender at the very least.

And he isn’t flying there appearing in around half the games

When it comes to goalkeepers from the championship I think Viktor Johansson at Stoke looks very accomplished. He's not the biggest keeper but is very agile, a good shot stopper, seems to be accomplished at dealing with crosses and is decent with his feet. Would count as an as an association trained player so a good option as a number 2 without taking up an overseas player squad space.

Quick, strong, scores, works hard, physical, perfect fit

Said that a few months ago
He is quality at shot dropping
Now playing for Sweden too

Yes he looks very good. Brings the ball out well and also supports they forewards.

You have listed a few players as I don't live in England I don't get to see games from the lower leagues. My question is what sort of transfer fees would clubs be asking is it Gray numbers or did we pay extra because he stood out above the rest

They paid a £1M for him in the summer IIRC from Rotherham
But the fee would be whatever they want, right
It’s a challenge buying anyone mid season
