The "Official" 2013/14 Other teams matches thread

Looking forward to Southampton/West Ham.

Lineker put it well, the academy of yesteryear vs. the academy of today. I really admire the way Poch has got Southampton playing football, they press very well and have some real talented footballer mixed with young academy stars like Shaw, Ward-Prowse, Lallana etc. and then they add that bit of steel in midfield with Wanyama and Schneiderlin. Lambert is silky up front and they have the loose cannon in Osvaldo.

Pirlo finished top (or near the top) of the assist chart in Serie A when Juve won the league in the 2011-12 season. I don't have the source to hand but you could probably find it.

Alonso is (imo) a better passer and better defensively than Modric, although he's not as good a dribbler. When I see Alonso, I see more of a Carrick type player (although not as good defensively as Carrick, but better technically). As a 6-footer, he also adds some presence to the midfield. If they were both fit, I wouldn't pick Modric ahead of Alonso for the '2' in a 4231.

Perhaps I can be more succinct; Modric is a good player (excellent technique), but over-rated in that our fans put him up there with Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta etc, when infact he is more on Jack Wheelchair's level (a player whom our fans have no problems in calling 'over-rated'). He doesn't affect games directly in attack or defence to be put up there with the truly world-class players.

What a shame we couildnt just get a 3rd goal yesterday.

Would have been great to go into work tomorrow morning with Spurs sitting top of the league, for at least another 12 hours.

I know irs only 4 games in, but it doesnt half put a spring in your step for a while.

Still, 2nd place aint too shabby, and as there's no Gooners at work, its all Mancs,Scousers and Pie-eaters, I can still hold some bragging rights for at least one working day

Hohoho

And the bitter revisionism continues apace.

how would that make me better? I miss Bale, I tuned in to watch his first game for Real Madrid and cheered when he scored? Or am I making that up completely and he was amazing throughout the season?

he wasn't amazing every week, but the first amazing performance I saw was nearly 3 years ago now, its equally disingenuous to say he's only been good for 6 months

once again, I never said that.

but 3 years ago he wasnt being called the 3rd best in Europe or up there with Bale and Messi.

Luke Shaw is a full blown star. Going to be world class. I'd love for us to sign him, **** it, £20m plus Rose.

To be honest as far as im concerned im not sure why anyone would be interested in the first instance. He has gone move on. Who the **** cares how and what he does. Maybe im too blasé about this all and maybe I dont care - thats not being bitter though - thats just not givin a ****.

sorry, not read the whole thread, only saw you quoted as saying its only been half a season

after the inter game though Moratti was in the press the next day saying they were gonna offer 40m in the next window, not that that ever came to pass

And in other seasons he's had assist number much lower, doesn't mean that he wasn't a fantastic player in those seasons.

Very few of our fans put Modric up there with Pirlo, Xavi and Iniesta from what I remember.

What do you mean by directly affecting games in attack? Are you talking about goals and assists here as well? Do you think a deep playmaker can be a great player without scoring or assisting a lot?

and i remember saying we should sell him if anyone offered him £40,000,000 because he probably wont get much better in terms of what he gives us. Turns out I was wrong on that occasion.
