The "Official" 2013/14 Other teams matches thread

That's amazing. I watched the game and can't honestly say I'd have guessed he misplaced half his passes.

Modric has to be one of the most over-rated players in the history of football. He was idolised by most of our fans, he's been bought for millions of pounds, but I just don't see it.

He doesn't score. He doesn't assist. He is average at tackling and defending in general. He is average for athleticism and has no physical presence.

All he can do is move the ball around quite well in tight spaces and beat a player in deep midfield positions. For this, he gets w*nked about. I never understood the pseud's who thought he was more important to us than Bale and I will never understand the clamour for a Modric replacement.

£30million quid for the little mug was great business.

+1 Bale is a match winner, could never see why so many Spurs fans thought Modric was more important.

Modric is a top player, he often set moves flowing which led to goals. As has been said before, he often played the second assist, rather than the assist itself.

He rarely loses possession and has tidy distribution of the ball. I think that he'd be perfect in our side still instead of Dembele. I think having Eriksen there could have made him even more effective than he was during his last time at our club.

All valid points, but remember when Madrid were trying to buy him and our fans kept saying £40m isn't enough for Modric? For a player that rarely scores, £40m would have been the best business we have ever done!

:ross:

What a common or limiting ability to have.

We have had soo many players who could do that. Modric was just a rich man's scott parker.

Wow.

Like saying all Bale can do is run really fast and hit a ball very very hard. Soo over-rated.

He does make some valid points if a little OTT in places. We struggled to break teams down even with Modric so it's not like he was this unlock the defence, control the game type of midfielder like Xavi. I even heard some Spurs fans call him "our Iniesta" We definitely have a tendancy to overrate some of our players e.g. Modric, Ekotto.

I can't wait until we are top of the league. It is a good time for Stoke to play Arsenal but I don't think they will get anything.

Hopefully Swansea get something on Monday but it may be a couple of weeks before we head the table.

I'd agree with that (that we over-rate players) but there are also a vocal group who under-rate a lot of our players for some reason. Modric isn't Iniesta but he isn't Parker/Livermore either, Carrick was under-appreciated by some as well, for example.

Bale is the most overrated by a distance. Some were actually putting him up there with Ronaldo and Messi ffs

IT WAS HALF A SEASON.

Still one of the best solo performances Ive seen in a Spurs shirt.

I won't be surprised if Bale outperforms Ronaldo once he gets going, yesterday he obviously wasn't anywhere near 100% match fit/sharpness so it'll take a few weeks, along with adapting to the new surroundings.

yes really, what i saw mostly was Spurs fans amused that he was getting put on a par with Ronaldo and Messi - in terms of hype/media coverage he was definitely the biggest player outside of those two though, hence the transfer fee that the worlds biggest club were prepared to pay for him.

Jesus .. Bale and Modric ... overrated ...

Bale last season was the 3rd best player in Europe on form, I don't think that's a question. The question is, will he do it for the next 5 years? and RM thought the answer was worth 85M+.

I honestly think he's going to surprise a lot of people in Spain.

No, it's nothing like saying that about Bale. Bale scores lots of goals and poses a constant attacking threat. It's quite obvious that he can do more than run fast.

Same as you mention Carrick -- he's technically tidy, but he's also an excellent defensive player. He wins the ball a lot, breaks up play and does it without fouling. Easy to appreciate.

My point still stands on Modric and the ludicrous amount of praise he gets from our fans. He gets compared with truly brilliant players but is nowhere near as productive as them: Xavi ticks the ball about and gets tons of assists (3rd most in Europe over the past 5 seasons). Iniesta gets goals and assists, but also gets goals when his team needs to be pulled out of the fire. He constantly beats people in the final 3rd, not around the half-way line or deeper. Pirlo dictates play from deep but also gets tons of assists.

Modric doesn't score or create enough goals to warrant being so defensively average (and frankly, quite lazy when it comes to tracking runners). I watched the Madrid game last night and, for their central midfield, it reminded me of when Modric played for us -- the opposing team could continually break right through the centre and attack the defence of Madrid.

Whilst Dembele isn't as good technically as Modric, he can still do a similar thing, in that he can receive the ball deep and create space by beating a man and then release the ball. But added to that, he adds physical presence, he tracks runners and is a good tackler. If he isn't scoring or creating goals, at least he is doing productive defensive work to compensate. THAT is why I think Modric is the most over-rated player going, and I thought it when he played for us too.

Source on Pirlo getting "tons of assists"?

How about Alonso?

A player can be an excellent deep playmaker without getting a lot of goals or assists.

I don't watch many Real Madrid games, but for Spurs Modric was very hard working. That was key to the Modric-Huddlestone partnership working.

Modric wasnt there to score goals. He was there to make play and boy did he do that. Assists? Who gives a ****, those are just numbers people think mean something. Walcott had more assists than Bale last season, who's better? Exactly, who gives a flying ****. Most of our play went through Modric when he was here and at his best. I still the miss guy for his ability, I just hope Eriksen can turn out even half as good as him, build on that debut and I have no doubt he will be.

Eriksen arriving at a similar age Modric did, yet with much more experience.
