The Goon Thread

Alan Tyers in the Tele(Gooner)graph with an apt summation - "the most Arsenally outcome you could imagine". LOL.

Exquisite torture. So that's now 18 years in CL for Wenger and not a spittoon to show for it. Oh, I will enjoy giving holy hell to girny gooners tomorrow.

would your point not stand if arsenal go onto win the tie?

It probably would, but i prefer like today when they have gone out for the fifth year running after having a VERY favorable draw that then leaves you with very little wriggle room:D

I await your excuses for Wenger and Arsene as usual...don't forget to mention 80M spent on Ozil and Sanchez in the last two years when giving your excuses explanations..

i guess ill be getting a lot of abuse from people who WRONGLY believe that im an arsenal fan :D

the explanation is simple. its football: sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. sometimes you can beat teams with players on more money than yours (ie. man utd vs arsenal the other week), and sometimes you can even lose to teams with players on less money than yours (ie. tonight).

...And sometimes in the case of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger you can spend loads of money and still underacheive relative to that spend...see Arsenal's last five years in CL...
So sometimes success is more to do with ability and managerial acumen: something that Wenger clearly lacks when it comes to the crunch (and net spend comparisons now confirm)

5 years of champions league knockout football is way too small of a sample size to draw the type of conclusion that you have done. and also depending on how judge relative success, i think there are very strong arugments to suggest that arsenal's champions league campaign as a whole of the past 5 years, hasnt been too bad given that they have always made it into the 2nd round.

Lol are you Wenger in disguise? For the money the spend now and the wages they pay you think last 16 for five years straight is good enough? So Arsenal should achieve what Shaktar, Basle and Schalke achieve?

Now I know you are a Arsenal fan/Wenger apologist!!

thing is, there is at least 10 clubs paying double the wages they pay

Yes but, Wenger has lost for 20 years on the trot in the Champions League. He always loses and never wins, that's the problem.

sign me up for the boring please

better to be inside the tent tinkleing out

i think id rather not.

fail to sign players in positions you need, get raped by the top clubs, do well against brick, be happy with finishing fourth every year, going long spells without any type of silverware, make up the numbers in europe because no where near good enough to be one of the top 10 clubs in the comp.

atleast we have a laugh every week.

over the past 5 years, they maybe have performed a bit below par (fwiw, im not sure they actually have), but thats not so unusual given the knockout nature of the competition, and the lack of any real sample size.

we've been one of the richest teams in the europa league over the past few years. yet we've never won the tournament. does that means always lost? the same probably applies to a load of other teams.

whereas we...

fail to sign players in the positions we need, get raped by top and bottom clubs, don't do well against anyone, are happy with EL, haven't won a major trophy since 1984, make up the numbers in the secondary European tournament?

things are what they are and we are certainly improving but let's not forget that for a large part of our history we were much higher up the ladder than we are now

A bit below par?
Stage A) get drawn in easy group and then underperform and finish second
Stage B) get a tough draw and go out

or...

Stage B2) get a VERY favourabke draw and still go out due to tactical incompetence.

Same old same old...a bit like your Wenger-can-do-no-wrong excuses :p

All true, but do you not accept that Arsenal's self-inflicted cycle is:

A) hilarious, especially when you think of how roosterily they used to dismiss us
B) gives us hope that as long as Wenger is there the gap between us doesn't get as wide as it perhaps should (given their resources and income generation)?
