The all new Striker thread..

Gamiero at PSG???? quick, good finisher, cant see him getting many games with Ibra and possibly Cavani there

Like you say, not similar to Bent at all. To me the typical "good for lower half and mid table strikers" are players like Bent and Andy Johnson, counter attacking strikers essentially.

Benteke would add a lot to our play.

-When opponents put pressure on us high up the pitch we would have someone to hoof it to. This is very valuable and since we're still not looking like a super high possession team I think we will be forced into long balls with some frequency next season. Effects of having a target man like Benteke might even be that we get more space to build from the back as teams have to sit back a touch if they worry about him bossing their back 4 when/if we play it long.

-When opponents sit super deep we have someone to cross it too, and to dink it in to for knock downs etc. Last season some teams would sit very deep against us, having someone like Benteke to cross to offers a new way to score against those stubborn teams. Smaller players can score from crosses when there's space in the box to attack, but when teams are defending deep and not allowing crosses to come in behind them you kinda need a battering ram to score from crosses.

Again I think there are positive influences on overall play to this. When full backs and wingers/wide midfielders can trust their centre backs to win almost every header then they can essentially just back off our wingers and full backs if in a bit of trouble defensively and more or less just allow crosses to come in (when organized), when those players have to be told to stop crosses from coming in at all times then they have to put pressure on our wide men - that actually makes it easier for our players to take the ball past them and get to the touchline.

-He is not a Doherty type target man that can't finish and can't use his feet either, so he's not that kind of mid table striker either.

He would give us a lot of attacking options and he would make us a more balanced side I feel.

Is there any of that Ade (on form) doesn't give us though?

I just think rather than an Ade (potential) upgrade, we need someone a bit different to complement him - someone more technical, more capable coming on to a defence and a sharper shooter.

Yilmaz is an allround striker - and knocked them in in the ECL. Would be a great signing too IMO. (and can play the lone front man)

GS have their pre-season on these shores and will play the goons in the Effeminates cup. He'll score against them.

Was going to write a reply to GB (who always puts forth fine questions I might add) but you've covered everything I was going to say...the one thing I would add is that I believe he would absolutely bring people into the game in a similar fashion to Ade (when Ade is on form - it's such a shame he's such an enigma because he has it all that lad)...again, I see him as potentially being a Ferdinand-meets-Drogba type forward.

Well, 'tis all opinions. i think he's a pretty sharp shooter myself, think he's much more direct when piling forward too...but you raise the eternal sorrow of Ade. He has it all. I just wish he could be consistent.

I've said it before and I will again, if we start the season with a new striker plus Ade and Defoe I will not be unhappy. In fact, I believe if Ade DOES stay, he will be back on form...flame away!

Why are you so high on Damiao, GB?

I just think he has all the attributes we need with our current setup - smart movement, good link-up play, excellent finishing, plus he's fairly big and has decent pace. Basically he's a poor man's Falcao.

He also seems about the most realistic. We won't pay £30m for Benteke and we won't pay £20m for a 28 yo Soldado. We might though pay £15-18m for 23 yo Leandr - he's in the Paulinho, Dembele, Modric range that we can just about stretch to.

Ade isn't great in the air, despite his size. But yes, an in form Ade is a very good player. The question is if we can trust him to be in form. I'm not so sure.

Based only on his one season with Villa Benteke is a sharper shooter than Ade by some distance.

I dont trust Ade.

The chances are he would perform well next season and then we will be like - we dont need a striker the following season - then sods law he will perform like brick - alternating seasons of great and brick. I dont ever wanna see a season like last season. Yeh we finished fifth and a good season but could have been like SO much better.

Basically the way I see it - there are more strikers out there than clubs wanting strikers - so even if they are not for sale putting in a good offer may make the club bite.

An interested Ade is a hell of a player. An uninterested one is a waste of space. He has shown on numerous occasions that he has both sides of the coin in his locker and very little in between.

benteke can play the battering ram with style so to speak. We need a physical presence up front if we are to move to a 4-3-3 as seems likely (despite my protestations last season), and he can do tha with real resale value if he turns out to be as good as he looks like he can be.

Damaio could, and I repeat could be the answer but hey we don't know. He has never played regularly in a high standard faced past league in Europe and that's the acid test. Personally I think if we can get him for the right side of £15M then it's a gamble worth taking. Bu if we can get Benteke for somewhere around that some (upto £20M) I know where my mine would be going.

The Turkish lad Yilmaz is the curve ball and looks a real goalscorer. He'll he would feel at home on the High road and players don cost mega mine when they leave Turkey so he is a real option to me.

I guess we will see where AVB/Baldini/Levy takes us this season but anyone of these 3 who are imminently gettable would be an improvement

wonder what that one would cost 15m?? would certainly get us goals....similar player to Dempsey perhaps a shade more clinical.

has a bit of Berbatov about him. Like his style, think he's much better than Benteke and would cost less too.

yeah I get the Berba comparison.........interesting that Swansea don't seem to have had to batter away offers for him after such an impressive season.......not that we know about anyway.

I don't think we are gonna agree on Benteke.....lol but its all good differing opinions and all that.

wouldnt be upset if we signed michu......looks a player

I wouldnt be surprised if AVB wanted Villa, Baldini is pushing for Soldado, and Levy/Sherwood are in Benteke's corner......transfer committees, gotta love 'em!!

I'm not sure about love, but I do like our transfer committee.

It seems we made a real effort to sign Villa, it failed so we're try the next name on the list.
