Summer transfer thread, AvB window wrap up pg 1527

Which player would you like to see take over from Luka Modric?

But the ITKs promised this summer would deliver the most exciting transfer window ever. A combination of middle east investment and Joe Lewis desire to 'play with the big boys' would see world class stars fighting each other to play at the Lane.

At a time when season tickets need renewing, club memberships need renewing, new shirts are being pre ordered, club looking for sponsorships.

Call me cynical, but I think I'm a realist.

Fletcher would be better than nothing. Cheap wages I reckon but £10m I reckon. Which is a lot but fcuk it I don't care anymore it's embarrassing we have 1 striker and keep on using Kane. Kane looks awful

AVB clearly want our midfielders to be athletic, with both Jenas and Livermore playing a lot so far.
M'Vila interest wouldnt surprise me. There's more to M'Vila than just defensive play,
he' often put into the limited dm category as most big and black midfielders are, but M'Vila is much more of an all rounder and a complete midfielder.
There are defensive midfielders who do that role better than him, and obviously playmakers that do better than him in that field,
but there arent many who combine the two roles as good as M'Vila.

I agree M'Vila is a bit more alround than say Sandro or Parker.

But to replace Modric we need a specialist ball retainer. The Euros really highlighted how teams without one of these (i.e. England), just can't compete at the top level. For me Moutinho or Sahin is absolutely essential.

I haven't seen a great deal of M'Vila, but what I have seen I don't understand the hype and wouldn't say he's an all rounder. I think his game is more limited than Parkers. For me Lass Diarra is a far better player. He's a genuine all rounder who gets put in a limited DM category. But Lass is fast as hell, a good passer and nearly as good as Dembele when it comes to dribbling in midfield. Lass is just better at everything the M'Vila from what I've seen and it much more athletic. Him and Sandro would make us very hard to break down, plus Lass would add a bit of spark with his forward runs on the ball. I also really like Capoue. I'd be pleased with any one of Lass, Capoue or Dembele, but from what I've seen of M'Vila he reminds me a bit of Livermore, which is okay, but nothing special.

Think you'll be surprised if we sign him. He wasn't match fit nor focused at the EUROS.
M'Vila won't go on runs with the ball no, but his passing game is impressive.

but the premiership has shown teams without one cope fine. United don't have one, chelsea didn't have one, City have Silva but he plays further forward so they don't have one in the centre , hmmm so really Gooners and Saudi Sportswashing Machine are the 2 teams that played with one that finished in the top 6.

Perhaps the harsh truth is we just cannot compete with the clubs we have finished around the past 3 years? This window has been a disaster, and while some fans will blindly want to see the positive, I challenge anyone to have predicted sacking our most successful manager for decades to replace him with AVB combined with such limited progress. Maybe AVB underestimated just how difficult Levy is when it comes to transfers, Harry may have spoken to much in the media but he did get the results despite having to bring the likes of Saha et al in...

United had to bring back Scholes because they struggled without one. They also have Carrick and obviously desperately want Modric.

AVB identified it as a weakness for Chelsea so spent all last summer pursuing Modric then Moutinho.

Desperately want Modric? That desperate that they've never actuall bid for him?

Chelsea won leagues titles and all sorts without one (they also won the champions league last season without one), and City won the league last season again without one. You're right about Scholes but they were winning games and doing well without one either (didn't scholes resign because of the injuries to fletcher , Cleverly and anderson?). It would be nice to have one i guess but it's defintely not essential in this league.

Emirates Marketing Project - Barry
Man Utd - Carrick + Scholes
Arsenal - Arteta
Tottenham - Modric
Saudi Sportswashing Machine - Cabaye
Chelsea - Lampard

A deep lying play maker is essential these days. Someone who can not only dictate play and get passes towards the attacking players, but also to act as an outlet for retaining possession in deeper positions. The opposition can't score against you if they can't get the ball off you, and it's no coincidence that our defensive record was excellent in the two seasons we had Carrick, then turned dogbrick for two years after we sold him until we signed Modric.

If we lose Modric, we need to replace him with someone who can not only pass the ball but crucially, has a good touch and is able to receive a pass under pressure but still be able to keep hold of the ball.

United? They have Scholes and Carrick who range from excellent to very good on the ball and I would say both of them and Fletcher, Cleverley and probably Anderson are easily ahead of Parker, Sandro, Livermore and Jeneas on the ball.

Even accepting that Lampard isn't one (and I think in the role he played today for example, he is), Chelsea struggled under AVB and when Di Matteo took over it was back to route one towards Drogba. I don't want us to depend on hoofing it to succeed partly because it's not great football to watch and partly because we're not very good at it.

Silva does play further forward, but they play Yaya Toure in that role regularly, I can't possibly believe you don't think he is a ball playing midfielder. I would also put Barry and Milner ahead of the aforementioned Spurs players in that category.

Why did you mention Frank Lampard when we're discussing playmakers?

Yaya toure is a ball playing midfielder to you? he's not in the slightest to me and he does most his good work when more advanced. Barry imo is a defensive midfielder with average ball playing skills and Milner rarely plays (and he isn't one either).

Rennes chairman Frederic de Saint-Serni has claimed that French star Yann M'Vila has now received a 'concrete' offer from England.

Arsenal have been leading the chase for the midfielder, but manager Arsene Wenger admitted last month he had backed away from a deal.

More recently reports have claimed that rivals Tottenham Hotspurcould be about to mount a rival offer.

Speaking after Rennes opening game of the season on Saturday, a 1-0 defeat to Lyon which M'Vila played the whole 90 minutes, de Saint-Serni revealed the offer.

"He has a concrete offer from England," Saint-Sernin told Canal+, without revealing who from.

Looks like it might be us.
