"We're trying to continue with the same system that Tottenham played most of the time last year," AVB said. "It's a system that benefits Rafa and [new signing Gylfi] Sigurdsson as the two players competing for that role behind the striker."

Which says at the start where?

Thats one quote, in others he's said that this is a temporary thing rather than try to get playing to suddenly swtich to a new system...however that over time we'd move to his preferred system particularly when he has the right players in place. Where that means 3, 6 or 12 months is anyone's guess. I would certainly expect it by the start of 2013/4 and potentially during next year if he manages to get the right type of player for the formation in this summer

Saudi Sportswashing Machine in for Remy, £7m, no chance at that price, werent we sniffing round for £15m - £18m

Saudi Sportswashing Machine have the ability to buy quality players at cheap prices.....Cabaye 3.5 mill, Tiote 4 mill, Ba for free, Cisse 8 mill, i would be surprised if they nicked Remy for a song too

its like with Cabaye, i remember reading that we sent scouts to watch him at Lille a few years ago (it was probably Saudi Sportswashing Machine's Carr who was with us back then), he was also heavily linked to Arse, and the prices being quoted were over 10 mill, and then somehow after no-one actually puts in a firm bid Saudi Sportswashing Machine swoop in last summer and make what they think is a reasonable bid and get the player

who knows, the same might happen with Remy

Speaking in the aftermath of Spurs’ 1-1 pre-season draw with LA Galaxy, Villas-Boas told reporters: “We are always looking for one more striker since it's a position that we're looking to strengthen.

“I think taking three strikers into a Premiership season is more than enough. Sometimes it's not, but hopefully it is. We're trying to bring somebody else in.”

aftermath

— n
1. signs or results of an event or occurrence considered collectively, esp of a catastrophe or disaster: the aftermath of war

Media colours nailed.

.................

3 strikers then, we already have Defoe so we need 2 more, and yet AVB says "we are always looking for one more striker" :-s

Really interesting comments. Given that he's also said that he likes Rafa/Gylfi for an advanced midfield/withdrawn CF role, presumably he thinks Kane is up to being 3rd choice. I guess that shows you that its more or less nailed on that only in exceptional circumstances will we see 2 out and out CFs (ie Ade, Defoe, kane) playing together this season

Ade/Defoe/Kane is a rather crappy strikeforce in comparison with United/City/Chelsea/Arsenal and even Saudi Sportswashing Machine!!

I've been thinking.... Say Ade costs us £5m and is on £160k a week on a 5 year contract, that will cost us £46.5m over the course of the contract and everyone thinks we have a good deal. If we spend £25m on a striker on say £80k a week, that will cost us £45.8m

Point is, we can spend more on a striker with less wages which in the long run would most likely cost us less, which wouldnt bust our wage structure and wouldnt have anyone else knocking on Levy's door for a wage rise.

"we are always looking for one more striker"

If/when Adebayor is signed, wouldn't that still be the case?

We can't take what he says too literally. I certainly don't think he means we will be looking to get as many strikers as possible, which is the most literal interpretation. It could well be that he assumes the Adebayor deal is effectively done, bar haggling over a few details, and that we are looking for someone else.

(And might also have resale value)

It is a good point though.

It is but if we'll only ever be playing one CF then there really isnt much point having a 4th CF in the sqaud.

And having Kane as 3rd choice is similar to having him as 4th choice at a time when we're playing with 2 CFs. Our 4th choice CF in recent years (ie Pav and Keane before him) have barely got on to the pitch so its probably not too much of a risk. I'm more concerned about having Defoe as 2nd choice than Kane as 3rd choice

Aside from the resale value which someone else mentioned, the only question about this second scenario is whether many £25m CFs would take £80k per week. A player of that value will have other top teams after them a number of whom could pay more

the following logic would be -the lower the transfer fee and higher the wages = the more the motivation get rid off quickly (might even make a quick buck)

Someone's been reading GG:

Big-spending PSG prepared to meet Spurs' £40m asking price for Modric

Luka Modric's transfer saga has taken another twist after Paris St German indicated they are prepared to meet Tottenham's £40million asking price.

The Croatia midfielder had been expected to join Real Madrid but the Spanish giants are reluctant to pay more than £31m.

Modric has no desire to join PSG but Spurs are determined not to sell their star asset for less than their valuation.
The 26-year-old has attempted to force through a move to Spain by refusing to join his team-mates on the club's American tour.

Modric did return to training on Monday but was fined £80,000 for his ill discipline. Manager Andre Villas-Boas branded his behaviour 'not professional'.

Madrid are keen to take advantage of the situation, hence their refusal to up their bid. They hope to force through a move despite Spurs' chairman Daniel Levy insisting he will keep hold of Modric, whose contract runs until 2015.

Assistant coach Aitor Karanka gave the clearest indication yet that Madrid want to replace Kaka with Modric this summer.

Karanka told AS: 'We decided he would stay in Madrid. Kaka and the club are working to find a good solution for all parties.'
Asked about Modric, he added: 'Which club would not want a player like him?

'He is an outstanding footballer and had a great tournament (Euro 2012). It is clear that he would fit in Madrid.'

PSG meanwhile have flexed their financial muscle this summer by signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva from AC Milan for a combined £52m and Napoli's Ezequiel Lavezzi for £24m.

Despite Modric not being keen on a move to the French capital, PSG's interest could force Madrid in to a rethink.

Mail: Arsenal agree £16m fee with Malaga for Santi Cazorla. Personal terms already agreed

Goal.com: Liverpool agree deal with Swansea to sign 22-year old midfielder Joe Allen. Fee £13.5m

Guardian: Saudi Sportswashing Machine have contacted Marseille with a view to signing the French international Loïc Rémy.

No, no, no... that must be wrong?!

Everyone knows that wenger doesn't spend any money and doesn't sign any one over the age of 21? You know, arsene's Young Guns, the wonder-kids who cleaned up? No? Sure I read it somewhere...

4-4-2 is definitely dead (like it has been at other successful clubs for most of the past decade).

The problem is that Defoe doesn't fit into any other system, so he's become even more achronisitic and pointless.

We need Ade + backup Ade + youth team Ade (Obika?).

Kane is a #10 really, so is more 3rd choice behind Rafa and the Sig.
