Which player would you like to see take over from Luka Modric?

Not sure how I'd feel about that if I were a Utd fan. Exciting player, big money but in a position where they have plenty of good players whilst they're crying out for a dominant centre mid.

What position does he play in? I thought he was a creative cenrtre midfielder but I'm not sure

You know, I'm really starting to think this. We were reported to be giving AVB £30m plus any transfer monies from the sale of Modric.
Right now what is our net spend? £3m? Have we really got the money to buy a Lloris or a Lewandowski without it being funded by the Modric sale?

Iirc we haven't made any profit in years despite few incomings, and 2(?) years ago we were 6m down; our CL revenues for that one season were entirely eaten up by bonuses. I don't have the exact figures, but I can remember that we certainly haven't amassed any sort of accrued profits to spend on transfers, even though our wage-to-turnover ratio is still *relatively* decent (if only because the whole league has gone to brick).

The problem is that our expectations have been skewed by the fact we're dining at/near the top table, so our fans expect us to go and raise those kinds of stakes when we have the smallest budget at the table. Our mains rivals include Emirates Marketing Project and Chelsea who have limitless money, while Arse and United and even Liverpool to an extent have vastly superior turnovers.

In reality, our expected expenditure should be compared to the likes of Villa and somewhat higher than Everton. Remember - our record signing is 16.5 million (same as Everton and smaller than Villa), which Lewandowski or Moutinho would comfortably shatter - yet some fans aren't even that excited by them! Hell, even Villa were spending more than us at one point thanks to Lerner' brief dabbling at being a sugardaddy.

If you look at the clubs that are currently dependent on generous owners to fund transfers and debt, we have:
City
Chelsea
Sunderland
Stoke
QPR (to an extent)
Forest in the future?

I think it's pretty amazing we've come this far without relying on Joe Lewis to dig in his pockets. Unfortunately, if we want to stay in the top four, I think we have no choice but to ask him to help us, or sell to someone who can. Other clubs, not just City/Chelsea, are now much more competitive in the transfer market because of their owners and we no longer have much of a spending advantage over others in this league.

Atm, if we want to buy big, we need to sell big. This is doubly true because we have so many deadwood wages. So don't expect to see Lloris or Lewandowski without Modric or at least four/five others leaving.

At the same time, I think we should be poaching Carr back from Saudi Sportswashing Machine - yes I know they haven't bought anyone unknown, but they have been very good at convincing them to come for reasonable fees and wages, and within reasonable timeframes. Sometimes what we need isn't just a great talent scout, but a great negotiator. After all, it's not like the likes of Bale, Modric, Berbatov were unknown either, but they are a big reason why we are where we are today despite fewer resources than most of our rivals.

If we can't get external investment, then we need a better scouting team, with the stadium and youth development a long-term strategy. And even that's just to keep up - the big four in City/Chelsea/United/Arse are outspending everyone on their youth structure atm, while Liverpool and Saudi Sportswashing Machine are also focusing on youth recruitment and Moneyball.

That's not being negative, just realist. The size of the task ahead of us is enormous, but doable. I just don't want to see us blaming Levy and whatnot for not buying Falcao, and Llorente, and whatever superstriker the fans want next, or for fighting over a million here and there. We really are handicapped here - not because we're not "ambitious", but because we just don't have the resources that others do. That's like asking your poor parents who work eighty hours a week to keep you clothed, fed, and safe buy you that Porsche that your douchey classmate got from his rich parents. Or to get you those same world-class tennis lessons that he gets from a former world No.1 or GHod knows you'll never win against him, or compete on even footing.

It's not that they don't want to see you happy. It's just that life is unfair. (Or the way the sport is structured is unfair, but I won't get into politics here.)

Le Football Man @LeFootballMan_
