Re: The 25K posts and it's all gone very quiet summer transfer thread #Levytime

I've always found the best counter-attacking play to be through out-wide

Either/or IMO. As often as not, with us at least, a counter attack consists of breaking up an attack - sprinting through the middle before laying the ball off to a wide player. Wide player, dependant on position, will go for goal or cut back to someone for a finish.

Point being, there isnt just one route to a counter attack is there? I fear this is gong to be one of those discussions that focuses far to much on minute detail and forgets the wider point.

Re: The 25K posts and it's all gone very quiet summer transfer thread #Levytime

He isnt Pirlo but he can pass the ball as well. Getting the ball out wide and forward isnt that big a deal when your full backs push up as much as ours have been as well.

Quick transition counter attack? Get the ball, run through the middle, find a runner - it neednt be over complicated

yeah, at this point we break out once again in philiosphies..i've always been taught the ball moves infiniately faster than the man..the best way to destabilise a team is to move the ball and not dwell on it. counter attack? get it into attacking zones , push / run and keep it moving. Him carrying the ball just tells me the other team is getting back to get organised. they wont be able to if we make them turn and chasing shadows.....they can only contain the damage by running into the most dangrous and vulnerable vacan zones...assuming they can get there quick enough

edit:- and with regards to fullbcaks pushing on........that tends to be a slower build up.....not a transition attacking one....a fast counter etc

Dembele bestrides the midfield like a colossus

Re: The 25K posts and it's all gone very quiet summer transfer thread #Levytime

can you please tell me why we need or want someone who plays as deep as modric?
He does not play as deep at some think, he bossed it at the Lane last game of last season although we won 2-0 he hit the post and outclassed a number of our players. He has just had a great game against Utd and every single Fulham fan on the web is gutted to see him go. He can dribble with the ball, is strong and can shoot contradictory to what people say.

can be a great player for us and am very excited about this signing.

Re: The 25K posts and it's all gone very quiet summer transfer thread #Levytime

More than one way to skin a cat. Where Carrick or Modric would have passed the ball incisively, or taken part in some patient build up to create an opening, a bit of pass and move - Dembele will skip all that and just run 30 yards with the ball through midfield and pass it to an attacker
Totally different method/style/technique but the end result is still the ball getting forward and the creation of space/opportunities.

EDIT : Also, the idea of Dembele, Bale, Sessegnon and Sigurdsson all running at a defence (with or without the ball) sounds bokers to me in the most brilliant way

I actually had visions of Bale doing that as he developed - especially in the last 20 mins of games when there is more space on the counter-attack. Drive through midfield with the ball and he could go either side of players from the centre. Also thought with his physical attributes he could develop into a very dynamic central midfielder. Hasn't really panned out how I saw it

im not convinced we do actually. if we are going to play a high pressing game then when things break down it is more likely to be a CB that picks up anything that comes loose and tries to distribute from the back.

and in those situations where we had a deep modric, expect Sandro or Parker to pick us the pieces.

i wasn't sure if Pandy was serious in his describption of Dembele being a goal shy back up to Ade or 3rd choice attacking mf behind VDV and Sig - as quite clearly he will be an all round CM with a tenacity and high workrate that can bring the ball up the pitch quickly or pass it around.

i kind of see Dembele as a good Zokora with an attacking edge thrown in.

So Deschamps will tell Lloris he needs to stay in France even though he left France himself and spent all of his peak years playing in Serie A and then the Premiership.

Just why would Lloris listen to someone who has done that?

Didn’t work out badly for a number of other French players coming here either did it like Desailly, Pires, Henry, Blanc etc etc etc…

He also gets to work with Gallas & Kaboul plus hopefully our new training centre will help as well.

Re: The 25K posts and it's all gone very quiet summer transfer thread #Levytime

You clearly haven't watched Dembele enough, there's a video knocking about of him vs Man United, all of his best work comes from deep. Go back a few pages and watch it, he would be perfectly suited to our role IMO.

Everyone still has this perception of him playing behind the striker, Jol changed this before last season I believe and he plays as a deep lying playmaker.

That video proves little though, my issue with him playing deep isn't entirely to do with the fact that I think he is a bigger threat to the opposition higher up the pitch. I think we need more of a defensive presence alongside Sandro/Parker. Maybe he can provide this but I haven't seen anything to suggest he is competent defender. He is a good enough footballer to play deep when we have the ball, but when we don't have the ball will he be a liability? Does this video show a great deal of defensive work? What about every other game?

I'm not saying this guy will be brick, I'm just saying I think we might be a bit flimsy with him in midfield as well as VDV/Sig. Undoubtedly he is a class act, but I haven't seen him enough playing deep to make me certain he'll be good as a direct replacement for Modric. I've always thought his best skills were getting half a yard, slipping around opponents and sliding in a cheeky killer ball, something he has less chance to do in a more defensive position.

Then again, the more I think about it, Dembele won't be a direct replacement for Modric, he has a good engine and he could do a good job box-to-box as long as he can press well. Perhaps my bad mood today is just spilling over into football as well!

Re: The 25K posts and it's all gone very quiet summer transfer thread #Levytime

If you're implying that I don't realise that he has been playing CM at Fulham consistently for ages, I do. Modric was a deep-lying playmaker, he sat back and helped break up opposition attacks through interceptions and sat relatively deep in order to create a bigger gap between our MF and striker to allow the AM more space to operate in. Dembele is not this sort of midfielder, he does more of his work higher up the pitch. I think we might find it irresponsible to play Dembele, VDV/Sig and a DM as a midfield trio.

Hopefully if Ade gets injured we'll see Dembele up front instead of him, he was class there for AZ Alkmaar and he would hopefully score a decent amount if we could put the chances on a plate.

He's playing a very similar role to Modric did for us. Ruiz is playing off the striker with Dembele behind him, like VdV/Sig does for us.

wait til we counter attack will the pace and direct running of Bale and Dembele!!
fudge being a defender then!

Broadly I dont disagree mate, but think about what you are saying. Quick transition? So the opposition have pressed us back, we break their attack and try to switch it on them? Dembele gets the ball in the centre and strides past 3 flat footed players - they are out of the equation, and then passes it into Bale in space? Doesnt strike me as anything but a quick transition attack.

RE your edit - Im talking about both aspects of your post, quick transition and "or quick switch to a winger with a bit of space?". Im in midfield, I have an easy ball to a fullback to my side, who in turn has an easy ball to the winger in front of him. Alternatively, the full back pushing up has allowed the winger to drift into space - I have an easy ball straight to him. I dont believe you have to be the most cultured passer in the game to pull of a quick switch to the flank, I think its more essential to have the passing option in the first place (something early observations tell me AVB is working on)

Re: The 25K posts and it's all gone very quiet summer transfer thread #Levytime

He's playing a very similar role to Modric did for us. Ruiz is playing off the striker with Dembele behind him, like VdV/Sig does for us.

I'm just wondering if he is best deployed in this role. If he is defensively good enough to play there for a team expecting to finish 4th. If he will have the discipline to not roam all over the place in order to create havoc, as he has done when I've seen him for Fulham. He will be less of a 'big fish in a small pond', I'm just wondering how this will affect him and if he can cope with the step up.

I think he's a brilliant footballer, I've just learned over the years that prematurely jizzing everywhere when we sign a good footballer is pointless unless they fit smoothly into the team and system. If he does this I have no doubt he'll be a success, but I am naturally apprehensive at the moment, having not seen him play in a Spurs shirt.
