Son Heung-Min

Schurrle has been a complete and utter disaster at Wolfsburg. Total flop. Took him about 30 games or something ridiculous to score his first goal. He is lightweight, terrible in front of goal and his confidence looks shot to pieces - possibly permanently. Wolfsburg fans would be dancing in the streets if we did a swap deal. He's absolute brick imo. Really part of the reason VFL had such an abject and dismal season.

Anyone suggesting this deal simply doesnt watch Bundesliga football. Son has been 10x the player in Germany Schurrle has, and simply on this seasons performances for their respective clubs was a country mile better. I think Schurrle scored like three league goals all season? Can anyone tell based on this season what they have seen in Schurrle that would make them want to bring him to the club? Because to me he looked one of the worst players in a mid-table Bundesliga club that struggled to create all season long.

I saw them live a couple of times (Wolfsburg is near Hannover, where i spend half my time when not in Amsterdam) and he was pathetic both times. Fans booing him and applauding his substitution. Hecking's support of Schurrle lost him loooooads of good will from the fans (the few that turn up).

Thanks. Great detail and overview of what i suspected was the case!

Wolfsburg have suffered because of the loss of De Bruyne and Bas Dost not scoring as many as he did previously. I don't think their poor season is just down to Schurrle not performing. Also Draxler failed to live up to the hype and price tag. Maybe more hsd been going on behind the scenes than we know

Also, the highlighted part could apply to Son for Spurs who for the price tag of 22 mill and reputation from the Bundesliga hasn't really delivered.

Schurrle showed a lot of potential at Leverkusrn but that move to Chels has really messed up his career. If Poch feels he can ressurect something in him then we will have to trust in him. Same with the decision to dump Son after a season.

Anyway it's all speculation atm.

I can't see that as reason enough to keep a player that would otherwise be shifted.

The lucrative American market didnt justify keeping Dempsey (who sold way more shirts than Friedel). Pienaar and Khumalo were shifted despite the Investec sponsorship and other stated South African initiatives, etc. Same with dos Santos and Mexico (where football is huuuuuge).

Of course trying to gain fans and commercial deals in a country or region is a legit goal. And maybe it helps tilt the scales a bit in a borderline case. And i have no idea whether Son falls into that category at all. But as a general matter, I don't think a player who otherwise doesn't make the cut will be retained just to sell shirts in a faraway land. Just as I don't think our Belgian contingent is a scheme to sell shirts in Ghent.

I agree. I think the merchandising is a nice benefit but first and foremost, the player needs to have a future in our team which I firmly believe son heung has. He's had one season which is not enough to make any firm judgements, but I have seen enough to suggest that there is a player there that can be of real value to us on the pitch. If he generates millions off it, then fair play!

It's not enough of a reason alone, but it changes the equation. It tilts the scales as you say.

Say for example we have the choice of selling either Chadli or Son because we figure getting rid of one of the current attacking midfielders not in the first 11 makes sense for whatever reason. Say the top bid we get for Chadli is £10m and the top bid we get for Son is £20m. But behind the scenes the money men figure that in terms of marketability Son is worth an additional £10m compared to Chadli over the next 10 seasons. Would that influence our thinking? I think it might... Not as the only factor, but as one of many factors that might play a part.

On the plus side - "However, athletes who earn an Olympic medal are exempt from South Korea's mandatory two-year military service -- obligatory for all citizens -- which could be beneficial to the North London club in the future."

On the negative side - let's hope he doesn't bring the Zika virus back from Brazil.

Think you're safe unless you're planning on getting impregnated by him.

this was always the plan, Son has the military service hanging over his head, the Olympics can remove that challenge.
