Son Heung-Min

Son is playing today against Fiji in the Olympics at 1pm UK time.
Two other games are Germany on Sunday and Mexico on Wednesday.

So he could be back in England as soon as next week.

If he comes back without a medal, then he still has the 2 years of military service hanging over him, which means we lose him for a much longer period in the future (if he is still with us) or we potentially lose re-sale value because of that, (the thought of which may give DL anxiety attacks). So ideally he trains/plays enough to keep fitness levels up, scores a few goals to get his confidence going, wins at least bronze, and returns to us happy and uninjured. Not much to ask, really :)

does he need to win the competition (gold) or would coming third (bronze) be sufficient to avoid national service?

I see that Son would already have been granted an exemption, if Leverkusen hadn't prevented him from participating in the 2014 Asian Games.

Fingers crossed he gets a medal this time around, otherwise there's always Tokyo 2020!

Such a bizarre situation. Win an Olympic medal or you'll have to join the army. Remind me which Korea it is he plays for again?

He could also get exemption if he is studying for a PhD, so he's got 5 years to get up to that level if he doesn't get a medal in Brazil!

I know rules are rules but I'm sure it's of more benefit to South Korea having a talisman of their nation playing in one of the biggest leagues in the world than having him marching about surely.
