Son Heung-Min

There is no guarantee that more expensive player would have worked though.

Look at Soldado, on paper a sure thing.
More a case of poor scouting and a lack of understanding as to we needed. Soldado was a low percentage finisher, but at Valencia especially the season before we bought him he got a lot of chances per game so it wasn't such a problem. He then joined a Spurs team that had no creativity, no passers and no tempo. He went from getting 5+ quality Chan es a match to barely 1 with us and it ate away at his confidence. The move was always doomed for failure. We needed a link man or a forward who could keep the ball and play it himself. Basically a Kane.

disagree, he was scoring at more than a goal every other game at Valencia, Getafe and Madrid B, he was like Defoe, but had more composure, better movement and understood the offside law

I watched most of his career pre Spurs, he got a ton of chances wherever he was successful. He was never the greatest finisher. He came here and the number of chances created for him diminished significantly and he was never a player that could do it by himself.

Son's performance against Preston was a case of a player being able to play in a manner that suited him, rather than being shoehorned in to a system that highlights his weaknesses. If I could change one thing about the way we set up it would be to excuse Son from all defensive duties and tell him to remain much higher up the pitch.

This not only suits his game (as he's pretty hopeless at anything he does in his own half) but will force opponents to defend deeper against us; something that will make a huge difference to our ability to play through opponents. Against most opponents we don't need all our outfield players behind the ball; it just pushes us deeper.

It baffles me that Conte continually asks him to do things he's not only not good at but poor at, i.e. play with his back to goal and track back, while limiting the amount he's able to do what he's best at: make forward runs facing the opponent's goal and receive the ball in the inside forward positions on either foot. Preston were poor but Son had the freedom to roam and always received the ball on the half turn or facing forward. It's almost as if letting a player play to his (world-class) strengths made him play better...
Or his form has fallen off a cliff and Preston are now his level? Let's wait and see and hope not.

Surprised this was on the 2nd page, I thought, bareing in mind the oppo, this was his best game since Norwich away last season.

He controlled the ball well, ran with it well made a few decent passes.

It was a 6/10 performance which is a huge upgrade from what we’ve seen all season, what an amazing bonus it would be to get the old Son back for the last few months.

I thought it was better than that
His baller retention was very good
And he played centrally which worked well
Annoyingly some of the time he had and passed to Kane… which if it had been the other way May have worked better

I noticed he was very central too and was just about to comment on how much more I think it suits us when he's in that position.

I thought he played very direct and was releasing it at the right times.

He still seems to be missing that oomph factor he's had in recent seasons. Most players are gonna have seasons where they underperform but I am conscious of the fact he is coming up to 31.

Decent game, helped out defensively as well, much better in the context of this season

Definitely. Looked quite a lot better.

Perhaps helps that City doesn't have the best ball winning midfielders for when he gets the ball in those areas, but for me at least he was quite a lot better than last time against them.

Hopefully he will continue to build his form and confidence. Son getting back even close to his best would be a huge boost for the rest of the season.

Was about to post that. A lot better from him yesterday but he looked a yard slower to me. Might have just been me but the 2-3 runs which he went on seemed to be a lot slower

Need to give Richarlison some game time to as need to have a group who are match fit so we're not susceptible to injuries

I told everyone, take away the goals and he is a below average player. My point has been proven time and time again this season. He shouldn’t be in the pitch.

You can't help but pat yourself on the back whilst covering no new ground can you?

I disagree on any player being defined by meaningless terms such as "below average" but I agree that he needs to be taken out of the firing line but no doubt will start again on Tuesday.

It's the strangest situation when you take in the Richarlison signing, big money, plays a similar position but doesn't get a look in.

Well with all the pelters i got for my opinion it feels pretty good to sit here patting myself on the back. The guy has never been top tier at anything other than goal scoring. Take that away from him and he isn’t really that good.

If you're Richarlison watching Son stumble around like a braindead goat with rigor mortis for 30+ games in a row, you have to be feeling pretty crap.

I'm sorry for the both of them - Richy because it's unfair on him, Sonny because this decline isn't his fault - he's trying like before, but I think his legs have gone at 30+.

It's on Conte for playing him game after game in this horror show of a season instead of taking him out of the firing line and letting him adapt to his physical and mental decline. Fair enough when we had no options - now we do, and he still refuses to use them. Dereliction of duty on his end.

Equally if you’re Son then watching Richarlson stumble around like a braindead goat with rigor mortis, maybe it’s a wash?!

You can't take away an aspect of a player though, that notion just doesn't make any sense. If not exactly the same but it's kind of like saying someone would be less of a goalkeeper if you took their arms from them.

Goals are generally quite important so it's an excellent strength to have but although his first touch wasn't always the best, he has been a lot worse in that regard, likewise with his ability to dribble past people and general awareness of the game.

I wonder if anything will ever come out that might be a contributing factor for the all round drop in form. It has been sad to see, unless you're taking joy from watching a Spurs player struggle who has given everything for a fair old while.
