Culture is history and emobodied, embedded social practice and much more. You don't choose to be born into it. And if you are, more likely than not you're going to defend it, as anyone would. It often takes massive strength of mind to break free, as I'm sure you can imagine. As I said before, plenty of people can be clams - I lived opposite The Boleyn pub for a while so you can imagine (yes, people with actual Nazi tatoos - lovely) - what I find really troubling is the sweeping generalisation that a whole group of people with their own history and stories can be dismissed as feral or scum or whatever. That is the language of fascism. And we're Tottenham fans. Amazing.

Also comparable you would say out of 40,000 West Ham fans only a handful would let them down as people. How many out of 40,000 travellers could you say the same? In my experience the handful would in that crowd would be those that were not idiots.

Replace "culture" with race, gender, sexuality, etc and I'd agree with you.

Culture is a choice though. If I decided that it's my culture to break into people's houses and steal their stuff, would that be protected because I've stated it's my culture? Or should I be treated as someone who has refused to live by the laws that we have in place?

Culture is just something that happened yesterday and the day before that, etc. In order to defend behaviour based on culture, one has to assume the person or people in question do not have agency.

I think that travellers have agency, I think they are all capable of independent thought and choices, just like the rest of us. On that basis, I will judge them on those choices.

I would lay my house on it that the % of the Travelling community that are utter scum is far greater than that of the local white community in East London and there are lots more of them.

I have only had brief encounters with travellers and each one has been with a scum bag criminal....so are you saying that's unlucky? Because of many other encounters with every other race I the % of scum bags I meet is much lower even though I encounter them more.

I don't care and I do not tolerate the vermin label. I'm a socialist and I do not approve of fascist labels to any group, something made clear by me at the outset Non white is a worry too, aren't they ethnically Irish?

Travellers live beyond the law and cause utter havoc and distress everywhere they go. I am not lumping them in with the Irish so that they can be given some kind of free pass.

You are actually right in one respect... I have zero tolerance for fascist rhetoric, I guess it's a product of my grandfather spending five years between 1940 and 1945 shooting the clams.
