Set Pieces

Staggered to see on MOTD that Liverpool have scored 40 set piece goals since August 18 and we are nowhere to be seen on the list. It's not as if we players of short stature because I would think off hand that we probably have taller players. So I guess it's all about preparation and training...
Helps having Trent Alexander Arnold who can put it on a plate and a player as tall and athletic as Virgil Van Djik who can attack the ball.

We are third highest scorers from headers though.
Might be something to combine with a set piece. (Also, at what point does a set prece become a next phase? When it's played short?)

As someone pointed out having van Dijk, a player that can be dominant in the air even against big and strong PL players probably makes some difference.

Vertonghen and Alderweireld are fairly strong, fairly big, but they're not dominant in the same way. I think the same can be said about Dier and Kane. Sanchez seems to me to have very little accuracy with his headers all over the pitch, no surprise that he struggles to finish headers even when he gets to them.

Then the set piece takers. We haven't prioritized bringing in a specialist for that.

Despite this we were doing fine last season. This season everything has been a mess, no surprise set pieces are included.

The last centre back of ours that I recall having the knack of winning headers from corners was Caulker but sadly the rest of his game was nowhere near van Dijk’s level.

those set pieces have been delivered by the FBs with quality which we don’t do

Poch did say he didn’t practice set pieces but I doubt Mou would ignore the opportunity

We scored the second most goals from set pieces in the league last season

It's way down this season but that is probably just a symptom of our overall bad form

I'm amazed at this stat considering how many just hit the first man and how rarely we score directly from a freekick. Guess it says how poor the rest of the league are at converting as well as mainly remembering all the bad set pieces more so that the ones scored.

I think we should start trying to win headers in our own box.

I don't think Jose's tactical instruction to let opposition players win the ball unchallenged in our 6 yard box is working.

They had nine corners to our two. We even scored (indirectly) from one of our two.

We can improve how we defend those situations for sure, it's worth continuing to work on. But if teams get a lot more set piece opportunities than us, because they attack more and better than us, this will continue to be an issue none the less.
