Set Pieces

Interesting analysis that. Although doesn't really take into account the ability of the set piece taker when making the decision.

The wide left areas might be great opportunities for a shot for us seeing as Eriksen is right footed. The right hand side might not be seeing as we don't have a great left footed free kick taker, but a couple of seasons back it might have been the exact opposite seeing as we then had Bale. I imagine the selection bias in those areas skews the numbers to where teams without set piece experts suitable for those areas will cross much more often so that a lot more of the data points for shots are actually from set piece experts... Not sure how much that influences the analysis, but I thin it's a factor at least.

Also a bit disappointed that an in-depth analysis like this tries to explain Yaya Toure's conversion record without presenting it as more variance related and that it's just a statistical outlier.

But we are crap at corners ( I hear some fans say) :)

dier had a couple of free headers today, I used to think we were bad at corners because of the delivery but its actually more of the finishing, dawson could be relied on to head one in, can't say the same for the current crop

It's people attacking the ball, When Bale started attacking the near post ball, we scored more from corners/set pieces.

Dier actually seemed to do that the first few games of season, then regressed. We had about 3/4 headers that we should have scored from.

Dawson never got enough goals from corners. King had great movement in the box to find a yard of space and Caulker was the same.

Lamella is rather good with corners/free kicks into the box. I think he should take ones that are being crossed in and Eriksen the ones where he is Shooting at goal. For some reason Eriksens free kicks or corners into the box aren't that good...

@OptaJoe: 10 - Tottenham have scored 10 goals from set-piece situations in the Premier League this season, more than any other side. Specialists.

Absolute mess defending set pieces all season.
Rose was marking 6"2 Sissoko at the free kick they scored.
Vertonghen regularly losses his man at corners.
We seem to be a mess anytime a high ball comes across our box when the opposition have any sort of physical striker.

Tottenham Hotspur have scored the (joint) most goals from set-pieces and conceded the (joint) least

Spammers got 4 goals from throw-ins this season (most in the league). The team needs to be mindful of that stat.

That must be wrong, because if you listen to some of our expert fans we are brick at dead ball situations. ;)
Must confess, that surprises me
And that's a big part of why were 2nd.
Ferguson's team were expert at both - they are great opportunities to exploit the opposition

The thing with dead ball situations is that they usually ( for various reasons) do not work out most of the time. Time has not changed this but the perspective of fans probably has. For example take Goldenballs and his free kicks outside the box, now if you listen to the so called experts ( pundits and the like) he was ace and the best around, but if you check out his success rate it was no better then most % wise.

Fans today ( for some unknown reason) think if they do not work all the time then they must be brick.

Interesting stats. Nice to see us scoring the most and conceding the least number of goals from set pieces. But really disappointing that we have only scored 3 goals from freekicks despite having one of the best freekick specialists like Eriksen. For some reason, Eriksen has not been at his best when it comes to taking freekicks this season.
