Set Pieces

An interesting read, but totally meaningless.

Some highlights:

"Statistically speaking, the offensive value of corners seems to be slim to none."

Tell that to Man U who scored 15 of them last year or Chelsea who scored 9. Off the top of my head, this season, Man U beat Arsnl with one and Wet Spam opened the scoring against us with one and Cardiff won the Welsh derby with one.

"The average EPL team scores a goal from a corner about every 10 games"

According to these statistics, we therefore scored roughly the average last season, even though with only 3 we were the worst in the division, so I don't know how these figures square up.

Their conclusion: corners are therefore mostly useless when it comes to scoring goals".

Absolute tosh and patently incorrect. See examples above. They are regularly the deciding factor in close games.

Oh and I nearly forgot, as they define a goal from a corner as one that can come from a shot within three touches of that corner, this definition would include mertesaker's winner against England. Corner, clearance, recross, header GOAL

its not so much we dont score from corners, we never even threaten from them, how many corners has john terry scored from, why cant out centre backs attack at corners like that.

Bale used to make a near post run and flick it on or flick it at goal, seriously hard to defend against.

Nowadays we have VERY little belief. A couple of lads will go for the ball, but usually the ball is elsewhere.

We should have 1 man on the keeper and 1 man blocking "the defender marking the player we are aiming at".

Following today' fixtures Spurs and Stoke are the only clubs yet to score from a corner in the Premier League thus far this season... figures in brackets are the number of corners awarded...

4 goals - Liverpool (78), Cardiff (47), WBA (60), Fulham (46).
3 goals - Emirates Marketing Project (91), Everton (61), Southampton (73).
2 goals - Man Utd (64), Sunderland (49), Palace (37).
1 goal - Chelsea (64), ARSEnal (54), Swansea (67), Villa (48), Saudi Sportswashing Machine (41), Hull (48), Norwich (52), West Ham (52).
0 goals - Spurs (79), Stoke (54).

Those are interesting stats. I feel our corners are ad hoc.

Every corner taker raises his arm in an identical fashion.

Just watching MotD

Liverpool scored from a corner
Everton equalised from a freekick crossed in

Edit - Liverpool take the lead from a freekick. They're quite important these "set pieces" aren't they? I've not heard of them before, maybe Spurs should try this tactic?

Edit2 - hang on a minute, Everton just scored from a corner. The big lad won a header, BANG, goal. This is a really, really good tactic, we should copy it!

Edit3 - are you guys sh.itting me? Liverpool just scored from a freekick out wide, crossed in, the lad just nutted it in! Amazing.

We definitely need to do some of this "set piece" thing, it is ACE!

Indeed... Goals scored from free-kicks (Direct / Indirect) so far this season...

4 - Emirates Marketing Project (3/1).
3 - Liverpool (1/2), Chelsea (1/2), Everton (2/1), Man Utd (3/0), Villa (2/1).
2 - ARSEnal (0/2), Southampton (1/1), Stoke (2/0), Saudi Sportswashing Machine (0/2).
1 - Norwich (1/0), Swansea (0/1), Fulham (0/1), Palace (0/1), Hull (0/1),
0 - Spurs, West Ham, Sunderland, WBA, Cardiff.

Which makes Spurs the only Premier League club yet to score from a set-piece yet this season...

7 - Liverpool, Emirates Marketing Project.
6 - Everton.
5 - Southampton, Man Utd, Fulham.
4 - Chelsea, Cardiff, WBA, Villa.
3 - ARSEnal, Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Palace.
2 - Swansea, Hull, Sunderland, Norwich, Stoke.
1 - West Ham.
0 - Spurs.

:-k

What the hell is going on. Even Parker is now scoring from corners. Has the world gone mad?

Twitter / OptaJoe: 11 - There have been 11 set-piece goals (excl. penalties) in the PL this weekend, more than in any previous matchweek this season. Cones.

So following today' fixtures, the number of goals each PL team has scored via set-pieces is as follows:

7 - Liverpool, Emirates Marketing Project.
6 - Everton, Man Utd.
5 - Southampton, Cardiff, Fulham.
4 - Chelsea, WBA, Villa.
3 - ARSEnal, Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Palace.
2 - Swansea, Hull, Sunderland, Norwich, Stoke.
1 - West Ham.
0 - Spurs.

And therein, clear as day, is an area we simply MUST work on and dramatically improve.

No more excuses

Surely penalties are set pieces.

Including penalties moves Spurs off the bottom of the set-piece goals table, above the Spammers \o/

So, over a quarter of goals ( ie more than 1 in 4) come from set pieces so far this season. Why can't we just copy Man U . Their winner against Arsenal and the goal which gave them the lead for the second time against Cardiff both came from an identical corner routine.

Hope our coaches were watching and are prepared for it on Sunday.

Would be nice if Eriksen could chip in with goals from free-kicks as regularly as this fella...

@101greatgoals: Video: Juninho Pernambucano’s 75 free-kicks in chronological order as the specialist retires. Which was his best? http://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/a...hronological-order-as-the-specialist-retires/
Say it ain’t so: The best long-range free-kick specialist Brazilian cult-hero Juninho Pernambucano is hanging up his boots.

The Brazilian has been scoring free-kicks for fun from 1994 with his first Brazilian club Sport, through to 2013 with New York Red Bulls and Vasco da Gama.

Juninho earned himself a cult status during his Lyon years for his idiosyncratic free-kick style, arrowing tomahawks from 40-plus metres.

At 39, Juninho has now decided to call time on his career, giving us the oh-so-welcome excuse to sit back enjoy his 75 free-kicks throughout his career.

It’s a fittingly rounded number for such a specialist.

Sit back and enjoy!

Yet again we can't provide a real threat from corners.

With our strength and size we really must score more this season.

One thing I have noticed is that all our main threats ( Dawson, Kaboul, Verts) start their runs on the penalty spot area. This gives them little chance of getting a good run at the ball and any cross has to be nigh on perfect to get it to them without the goalkeeper or defenders intercepting. I believe this largely explains our lack of goals from this source.

Thoughts?

I started this thread in September. Not a jot has changed all season. We still don't make runs at corners - even Alan Smith commented on this yesterday. It ain't rocket science. Why don't we just copy the movement and positioning of Benfica.

Just a few more goals from this source at critical times in games could have made a massive difference for us.

Shameful neglect IMO.
