Saido Berahino

Pulis and WBA have handled this situation very poorly IMO. At every moment they have shot their mouths off to the press and kept the whole thing alight rather than play it down. For fudge sake you'd think this is the first time one premier league club has had the temerity to try to sign another premier league's club's player. Perhaps berahino has behaved unprofessionally but so have WBA.

It's the new world order now though. Teams outside the big 7 are now financially stable enough that they simply don't need to sell. We behaved like when clubs had to sell for any reasonable fee.

I agree that clubs don't have to sell and we need to get used to that. But players will still want to move from one club to another. Therefore clubs will have to manage players who do not get their move better than WBA have done with Berahino.

The only difference is now you have to pay more. Apart from a couple of examples like Leeds most PL clubs have been financially stable enough that they've not needed to sell.

But because the cost of relegation is so enormous now, creaming off cash by selling assets (like a lot of chairmen have traditionally done) isn't an option any more. You won't cash in on a £25m asset if it's possible that it will cost you a £100m relegation

He's ceased to be an asset, he's now a problem.

Precisely. Playing it out in the press is never going to get you the result that you want which is why I like the way that we do not do our dealings in the press at all. Poch mostly stays quiet and dignified and as a result keeps the player on side. Pulis is obviously playing a power game behind the scenes and unsettling Berahino even more. There's no other explanation for him basically calling Saido out in the press insinuating that he has been unprofessional and it is his own fault that he is not playing. Funnily enough, he's doing so a week before the transfer window is opening. Co-incidence? I think not.

According to Pulis...
"I always want the team to be a team, the supporters, the players, the management side, the directors, everyone together. Sometimes Saido does things that break away from that. He's been told, but he's been fine as you've seen - his reaction coming on was absolutely fantastic."

"He worked socks off and he's fine - no problems. At times you have to make him understand it's about the group and about the team. It's more a reminder it's about the group. You've got to look and understand Saido's had almost five months where he's not prepared himself or got himself ready and prepared to play in the team."

That's actually a pretty mixed message. Sounds to me like Pulis is trying to cover all his bases. Soften up the fans for the possibility / likelihood of Berahino leaving. But at the same time, there's enough positive stuff in there to offer the player a way back into the team if possible and/or Peace continues to dig his heals in. I wouldn't be a massive fan of Tony Pulis, but I do think he's been put in an impossible position by his chairman (primarily) and also the reaction of Berahino to an extent. I don't think any of them is coming out of this covered in glory, but I get the feeling Pulis bears the least responsibility for the mess.

He looked a bit overweight this week, I think if we signed him he'd be 3/4 weeks away from being at the same level of fitness as the rest of the team, hopefully he'll be itching to get going if he does move and up his workrate to get in shape.

The game has changed re clubs need for money .. however

it hasn't changed re player power, Ronaldo, Rooney, Saurez, Messi all have demonstrated even the biggest clubs are dictated to by players.

Leicester is going to prove my point for me ..

I agree DS, not sure Pulis could have dealt with this any differently
Well he could have avoided giving a running commentary on the whole situation. And when Pulis took some respite the cudgels were taken up by his mate Redknapp who was probably briefed by Pulis. What ever the reality of the situation, it certainly can't have helped to keep mouthing off to the press. Compare his handling of berahino to Poch's treatment of the first teamers who fell out of favour and got nothing more than sporadic games last season including the team captain. They were then moved on quickly and quietly in the summer. Not a whimper in the press from any of them against the club.

Course they do, he came out of that window looking like a total tit and made WBA look very unprofessional in the process (playing it all out in public) it was all his own doing - and the best thing was he thought he was making himself look good and getting one over Levy/THFC

Indeed.

True, that's a possible way to handle it.

I don't think Pulis is mentally capable though, like Redknapp, he's predisposed to running his mouth.

Perhaps. But none of us really knows what's happening behind the scenes. But my guess is Berahino's refusal to work hard was making life difficult for Pulis with the other players. Presumably he was doing everything in his power to get Berahino back to work, but was being ignored. This undermined his position with the rest of the team so he took it public as a demonstration of how seriously he was taking it. At the same time, he probably had his mad chairman telling him to "make an example of Berahino" and if he didn't... then Peace would take to twitter again and do it himself.

As I say; we don't really know what's going on, but the statements from Pulis suggest he's being put in a tough position and is trying (albeit badly) to smooth it out somehow. I'm not defending his statements; merely suggesting he's bogged down in someone else's mess (the chairman). Makes me thankful for Levy, I have to say.

Peace is clearly a cnut, made life difficult for his manager, alienated a player and basically created a circus around something that could/should have been handled out of the spotlight.

His previous behavior makes it unlikely in my opinion to see us getting this done in January.

Depends whether their interest in Townsend is genuine... if it is, it will offer them a get out of jail card with their supporters.
