Saido Berahino

So Mr peace you turned down around 20mill for Berehino and he is making no contribution to your team. What a great chairman you are.

True, but in this world of crazy bottomless pools of money that City and Chelsea, it would not surprise in the slightest if Chelsea threw £20m+ at them (a drop in the ocean to them), then Peace comes up roses

They wouldn't sell to a relegation rival.I think if Chelsea or City want him he is more likely to run down his contract and go on a free with stupid wages than leave with 6 months to go he might do that anyway .Personally I don't think we will ever see him in a Tottenham shirt.

His contract expires in 2017, not this summer. So, come January, he'll technically have a year and six months to go: if he runs all that down sitting on the bench, I doubt any team in the world will take him on, given that he'll have stalled his development by two whole years at that point.

I don't think we'll see him in a Spurs shirt, no. I have no doubt we'll at least throw an enquiry their way this January, but Peace likely won't sell to us, and as I mentioned before...I think he's Chelsea-bound.

Ah thought he was on the last year of his contract. In that case Peace will snap the hand off any bid north of 15mill except from us.

The Ben Teke switch to Heskey was quite funny and apt, but Bera Hino to Jeffers?!?! Switching him to Defoe would have made more sense!

PS.... While the mods are being tacos and changing names can they also change Soldado's name to something appropriate?.... Wondering if there is anyone out there poor enough?... What about the player that claimed to be George Weah's cousin that (I think) Souness signed on the strength of an agent's recommendation?

We would, but anyone still clinging on to that episode of our recent history is clearly beyond humour so it would be a wasted effort

;)

Bera.hino has done himself no favours this season. But - for me - the player he was last season would have been a very positive addition to our team. I would be cautious about bringing him in now because of his attitude and I suspect the moment has passed anyway. But if we can bring him in cheaply and Pochettino still wants him, then I'll look forward to his revival.

The point is that he doesn't want to be at West Brom. When he gets to go to his preferred club, the "attitude" will change for the better. I see no risk other than it's always a risk involved in signing any player.

Modric threw a strop when Chelsea came in for him. Even "went on strike" if I recall correctly. Levy didn't sell and by mid-September he had knuckled down and was finding his form again. He ended up having an incredible season for us. That's what I expect of a professional - I totally understand the initial anger and the stroppiness. But once the window is closed and they literally can't join another club, then a player needs to demonstrate his work ethic. If he doesn't, then I believe that places a question-mark against his general attitude.

But Pullis has a wealth of forward options and isn't reliant on Berahino to the level with which we were reliant on Modric, I haven't really read of Berahino refusing to play (other than the initial social media stuff after the window closed) so it's probably more a case of WBA being in a position to leave him out, rather than him making it so?

It was halfway through October and Pulis was still saying things like:

Saido's fitness levels and mental attitude have dropped in respect of what was going on before. But we've had him here for the last two weeks and we're trying to get him to where he was last season. He's a big player for us and a young player, he needs guidance, a lot of guidance. (source)

Then just a couple of weeks ago Pulis clearly implied that the reason Bera.hino was not playing was down to the player's attitude and character. You hardly need to even read between the lines. This is all a direct quote from the player's manager. The last bit is particularly damning suggesting that the striker hasn't even been keeping his fitness up.

"If you look at last season when I came in, from January 2 to the end of the season, the most influential player at this football club, for me personally, was Saido. He got the goals that got us points and kept us in the league and this year we haven't had that. We've played for six months without Saido being anywhere near as good as what he was last year. That has had a massive effect on this football club, on the team and on everybody else and it's been disappointing in lots of ways."

"I'm not blaming Saido, I'm not blaming anybody - it's just fact. I think there's no question Saido was disappointed the [Tottenham] deal never went through. As I've said, there's people within the game who can handle that and there's people in the game who can't. It's not any fault of his, it's not any fault of anybody else. It's just the way you're brought up and the character you've got."

"It's been a real disappointment for the team, for the football club and for the supporters because he's an outstanding player and an outstanding talent. We haven't had that at the same level as we had last year and I think people have really missed that point."

"He has to get as fit as he was last year and wash everything else away. He has been given a GHod-given talent but in the last six months he has not fulfilled the potential. He needs to get back to that for his own sake. The best place to do it is here. I don't want to get into asking prices and whether he is for sale or not. I'm not interested."

It's December and the guy clearly still isn't putting in the required effort. To me that's a big problem. And I'm one of the guys who thought we should push the boat out for him during the summer. I really wanted him at Spurs having seen him turn in a couple of amazing Man of The Match performances last year. If you go back through this thread you'll find me singing his praises right through to the end of the last window. And I'll support both Pochettino and Bera.hino 100% if he arrives at Spurs.

I just think there are warning signs now.

What fudging warning signs? The management were I work have literally frozen me out. No way I want to perform my best, because it doesn't fudging matter, as I won't get promoted anyway! I just do what I need to do to keep my job until I find something else. It's the same thing. Once I find a new place, where what I do might actually be appreciated, I will be back to my best.

I take your point.

But in my view a professional athlete who is not maintaining his fitness levels is a potential warning sign. It's also a warning sign for me when an athlete who has chosen to dedicate his life to a team sport, can't dedicate himself to the team while still making it clear that he is unhappy with the club board.

And there really hasn't been any indication that the club management have "frozen him out". Quite the opposite; all accounts seem to point towards Pulis and the coaching staff bending over backwards and sympathising with the player's position.

I totally respect that you don't view any of that as a problem. To an extent I do though. That's all I'm saying.

The unknown factor is how he has been treated by Jeremy Peace. Pulis himself said in January that "the player has been treated like a piece of meat"
