Ryan Mason

For Mason to have made it into the England squad in such a short time is an amazing achievement, and one very well deserved because of his industry, determination and desire.

But from what we have seen of him so far this season I'm convinced there is still one hell of a lot more to come from him, once he truly settles into the side and gets fully on top of his role. Of course he is still a long, long way from becoming the next Paul Scholes but if he can continue to develop the potential he has shown to date the possibilities for him to emerge as a truly potent midfield force are far from beyond him.

So often we have seen glimpses of exceptional vision: instant balls over the top that haven't quite come off because he's still fine-tuning his radar; intuitive forward passes out wide or into space that colleagues haven't yet learned to read; his knack of getting into good positions allied to shooting ability around the edge of the box which must surely lead to more rewards as he gains confidence and learns not to snatch at opportunities.

Some have criticised his tendency to get too far forward, leaving us open at the back and I'd agree he needs to improve in this respect, but one thing's for sure, he has the motor to do it.

Doubt anyone expects too much from these two games, he may not even get on the pitch for either, but it's a start - and hopefully the beginning of what could develop into long and successful international career.

like eriksen i think more time in the gym will do him good

I know there's cases where that has worked (Del Piero and Waddle when they were young), but it can also unbalance you and cause new types of injuries. Mason is no slighter and just as tough as his predecessor in the role (Modric)

The way the game is at the moment, energy is so much more important than power.

Modric had a low centre of gravity and great core strength.
... as well as considerably more skill on the ball, it has to be conceded. The combination made him extremely difficult to dispossess, allowing him to influence the game that much more with his intelligent passing and creativity.

His recent absence through injury undoubtedly affected the ability of RM to dominate and may well also have accounted in some measure for the dip in form of both Ronaldo and Bale.

Can not believe they are fans who are saying Mason is as good in some areas as Modric, Modric is world class and Mason is no where near that ( and imo will never be).

Mason is the same age now as Modric was when he signed. Modric only became a worldie 2-3 years later, so that's the time to see how close Mason has got, rather than now.

Modric was a established international player before he played for us and had played in a world cup and Euro ( where he was voted into the team of the tournament). So he was already a star.
