Roberto Soldado

Re: Official - Soldado

Gotta love this forum. Until this latest game, people were complaining that he wasn't doing his job because he wasn't scoring enough goals or getting in the right positions to score goals. Today he scores and he's still not good enough because despite doing well all across the pitch linking play, he missed a couple of chances.

The goal he did get wasn't an easy chance either ffs. As the commentator said, he reacted superbly and got it spot on, when many strikers wouldn't have weighted the header properly at all.

I actually think this one of the main reasons we should keep him. Okay, he needs to relax a bit and get back into the instinctive goal-scoring form he was in at Valencia, but even then he brings something to the table that none of our strikers do: namely, the ability to drop deep into midfield and play key passes that could easily pass for those of an attacking midfielder like Eriksen at times. Assuming we'd want a perfectly balanced front line, that means we'd need a physical front man who can hold the ball up, a dribbler who can weave through defenses, and a passer who can drop deep and orchestrate attacks as easily as he can get on the end of them. We're lacking the second option, but we've got an example of No.3 in Soldado, and throwing that option away for an unvaried front line of big lad, big lad and big lad (Ade, Kane and presumably Bony) would be a waste and counter-productive, imo: it would make our front play fairly predictable.

Re: Official - Soldado

Soldado could bang in 25 league goals and kingdawson would still say he was ****. Never met anyone who has his opinion of players and nothing can budge it however they play. It's bizarre. Dawson is amazing, kaboul is awful, soldado ****, blah blah blah

To be fair, pre-season friendlies are pretty meaningless and bear little or no relevance to the competetive fixtures.

So why should what happens in them have a major bearing on people's opinions of players?

You're so off the mark it's funny....actually your second statement doesn't even make sense being that he would have had to play good to test your ridiculous theory.

Can someone remember my stance when Soldado played under AVB? i stuck up for him continuously...i said his link up play is better than i thought....i said i won't judge him until he's able to play under a system that suits him...i said the team are not creating chances therefore it's unfair to judge him.

Also my stance on Kaboul? again utterly wrong. Hopefully Diego or some of the older poster can again tell this nobody that i was always defending kaboul when most didn't...how i said it's a joke selling him....how i said he's playing brilliantly at pompey...how i said it's great we're resigning him when most didn't think it was. I do think he's finished now for sure so yes awful NOW.....but it again doesn't prove your point so try again.

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

I knew this would happen when we signed him...people expect too much from him imo. He's a poacher and needs his teammates to create chances for him to be at his most effective. If i'm being totally honest he's got far better link up play and passing than i thought and i've been pleasantly surprised.

He needs his teammates to create more for him. Now we have Eriksen, Holtby on form and Lamela still to come it will happen. It's not like he's missing chances galore is it? he's getting in decent positions but not been given the opportunities (except Cardiff away).

Re: Official - Soldado

hahahahahaha people think Soldados goal was deliberate hahahahahahaha take your Spurs goggles off.

The only thing deliberate was his attempt to make contact. There is zero possibility he deliberately directed the ball to loop over the keeper the way it did. If that was his attempt it would be a genius goal and from his celebration its obvious to anybody he didn't mean it.

i'm more in this camp, yes he tried to get his head on it, but no more than that, it certainly wasn't "expertly cushioned" over the keeper

You're right Veron, he was obviously trying to loop it over the bar for a conversion :ross:

Re: Official - Soldado

1: Adebayor
2: Soldado
3: Kane

Subject to change!

1. Ade
2. Kane
3. Soldado

For me. Just think Kane's the more versatile and will deal with being up top on his own a lot more than Soldado, he can back in, hold off defenders and link play. I'd also back him over Soldado to put away any chances that fall to him.

Re: Official - Soldado

Im watching Liverpool play right now, they look like a proper team! It really accentuates how far behind we are as regards to functioning as a unit when Soldado is on the pitch. The first half against Schalke we looked like a team with purpose but as soon as Soldado is on the pitch it all falls apart.
Playing a loan striker role is so much more than being a poacher. Having a front man who holds the ball up not only allows other players into the game but enables us to defend better. Not saying he has to be a Drogba or even Diego costa but when you see Chelsea on the back foot all it takes is a direct ball to the big man who holds the ball up and brings the defending lines further forward and completely turns the play around from being under pressure to the ones exerting the pressure

Soldado can't do any of this. He really has to go, he is holding the team back so much.

Yeah he holds the team back so much, thats why we played our best football in the second half....

Not to mention that a lone striker only needs to do those things if we're planning on getting the ball up to him early. I'd rather we played what's traditionally a more continental style and kept the ball more, playing him in when there's a chance. You don't need a battering ram if you can pick locks.

you don't live in the real world. what you wish to happen and what does happen is not the same. i also wish for us to play like barcelona but in the PL you can't pick locks every single game. you need to mix and match. if you've ever watched the game you would know that ALL teams come under pressure and sometimes you do in fact just have to get the ball up early which allows the defenders sitting deep to push forward. if you do this with adebayor you have a chance of scoring. if you do this with soldado the ball comes straight back in your half
whoever thinks we played better second half doesn't understand football. soon as soldado came on the pitch he rendered the 3 around him much less effective. a) you need the ball to stay in the opponents half b) you need this even more under a Pochettino pressing system. Soldado ticks none of these boxes

How was the 3 around him less effective when they created more chances for themselves and for Soldado than they had for Ade in the first half? Also at times Soldado was found on the right of the forward 3 and the left, demonstrating the flexibilty you need. Like you say you have to mix and match hence why there is a need for Ade as well as Soldado...

I'm looking at the bigger picture. all the signs I've mentioned are there, we just got away with it in a pre season game.
when it counts from next week onwards, youl see him disappear again.

he has talent for sure, but off the top of my head at least i can't think of a striker less suited for the PL.
he
needs
to
go!

Re: Official - Soldado

The game naturally opened up in the 2nd half, it was only a friendly afterall. I really don't know what basis there is to think Soldado would do a better job up top on his own next week than what Ade would, or even Kane come to mention it.
