Paulinho

Jenas had great technique but zero awarness on the pitch of where his team mates were and seemed to always choose the wrong pass which is why he trustrated so much, imv

trustrate

noun (intr):

1. To be dependably disappointing and / or annoying

Thought he did alright tonight. Much more assertive than when he came on against Hull. Some of those flicks really tried my patience though.

Agreed. Much better, at least he was trying...

Still looks very short on confidence. I wonder if that might be why he's trying so many flicks too, just looking to get rid of the ball as soon as possible instead of taking a touch and risk making a real mistake...

Good? Come on man please...... Just because he was better than his usual self, doesn't mean he wasn't poor. Tbf he started the game a lot better than previous outings yet got worse as the game progressed. Once he makes a mistake, he seems to lose heart and technique. Has to be sold asap

Paulinho was pretty decent tonight, I think he looked confident to be honest, and he's always done the flicks, it's a way of creating something and not doing the 'take 3 touches and pass into feet 5 seconds later' that slows most of our attacks down.

Again, bizarre that he will probably get called out as being really rubbish last night. Maybe Spurs fans just hate midfielders that are a bit more box to box and a bit less playmaker.

He wasnt poor. And one of the main things he always gets criticised for is hiding, he was constantly showing for the ball. Much better...

As I said - he started the game better in this respect but got worse as the game went on. Also Partizan sat deep which meant he could get on the ball more with the game in front of him.

Another problem is his positioning. The reason why he gets into goalscoring positions is because he essentially does what he wants. This leaves his partners consistently exposed and tbh I think Strombouli got a lot of stick because he was isolated whenever Partizan countered. He isn't good enough technically to play in our midfield and whoever he plays with is made to look a **** because he offers next to zero positional solidity.

Three dummies on the trot to no-one there last night. I'm having trouble seeing past the empty shirt act, tbh.

Dont agree he got worse as the game went on personally, but fair enough.

Postitionally I dont understand, I thought it was obvious that he was given a more advanced role than the other two CMs meaning less defensive duties. If you want to blame someone for lack of defensive cover I think you have to question Poch there, I dont think Paulinho is liable for that....

Not going to copy-paste all of it, but the conclusion more or less sums it up:

I realise that he has not had a decent break from football for longer than is helpful to a top-level athlete but, even giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming that after a rest he’d improve by 20%, I just cannot see any way back for him at Spurs.

Right now I think he's behind a lot of players for a starting spot. It took several injuries and an EL game for him to get a start. With most players fit and a first choice team on the pitch he's probably not even in the squad.

To be honest, at the game it looked like to me that Demebele was given the more advanced role. Paulinho seemed to be looking to link the play from deeper. Demebele was so **** and barely touched that I barely noticed he was playing so who knows

I thought all 3 of Dembele, Paulinho and Stambo were poor, though the latter you can cut some slack with because of the goal and because he was exposed a lot of the time. Dembele was anonymous as was Paulinho, particularly in the first half. Stambouli though looked like he was running throug mud sometimes he was so slow!

Personally, I dont think any our of 4 senior CMs are good enough to be in our starting 11. The youngsters like Carroll, Bentaleb and Mason have time on their side and all three of those use the ball better than Dembele, Paulinho, Capoue and Stambouli. I dont see what Dembele offers which Bentaleb doesnt and I dont see what Paulinho offers which Mason doesnt. I'd therefore offload Dembele and Paulinho in Jan, recall Carroll and hopefully eventually find a DM who's good enough

I'm almost certain a player on a season long loan between PL clubs cannot be recalled. Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere that we could recall Carroll either.

In the end, if we offload Paulinho and Dembele it would leave us with Capoue, Stambouli, Mason and Bentaleb. That's 4 players for 2 positions, in theory just about enough with other players capable of covering if there's an emergency. However with Bentaleb and Mason being inexperienced yet and Stambouli not yet having had a start in the PL it does seem a bit light with the cup games in mind. Two out and one in seems fine to me though.

Oh, and I really didn't think Stambouli was poor.

Fair enough, I wasnt impressed with Dembele. I thought Paulinho was the most advanced but maybe he wasnt....

Agree with the general idea of your post of giving our youngsters opportunities, but dont think we should be giving up on Capoue or Stambouli yet....

I agree. We improved significantly when Bentaleb came on IMO. He wasn't perfect, but everytime Bentaleb got the ball his first thought was to release it forwards and quickly, or to beat a man and carry the ball into space before releasing it.

With him, Lamela, Kane and Lennon on the pitch and all willing to take a man on and commit their defenders, we finally looked like a coherent and dangerous attacking unit.
