Paulinho

Also Lamela has shown glimpses of real skill and talent and puts in 100% in every game he plays.

Paulinho struggles with the technical side of games, ambles around like he doesn't want to be here and looks like an incredible waste of 17m.

He has looked basic and competent in his last few games and fans call this encouraging. For nearly 20m you have to expect so much more.

He has looked lazy tracking back and bottled out of tackles several times - he has largely displayed a poor attitude towards to defensive side of the game and his midfield partners has often been left to look average because of this

Can not agree with that, watching him when he has not got the ball he is always looking for space and on the move, i can accept that on the TV that does not show as much but he covers a lot of ground and takes up good positions, the problem is that until recently we have not moved the ball quick enough and because of that he is picked up before he gets the ball. I agree he is not the best tackler in the side but the likes of Lamela, Eriksen are just as bad.

Interesting.

Did you have the same impression when he came on against Hull? Because I thought he was about as stationery as a pen in that one, but that was watching on tv and of course just a handful of minutes in one game.

When he was in decent form last season I thought his attacking movement was good. Defensively I've been less convinced. I think players like Dembele and Mason put in a better shift to get right side of the ball when we lose it.

Would be very interesting to hear what Poch thinks about him, obviously not going to happen. I was almost certain Paulinho's days were numbered at Spurs a month or so ago, now though it doesn't quite look as definitive.

I am not trying to turn this into a TV/Ground debate as both forms of watching a game has its good points. However you do see more of what a player does off the ball at the ground ( and as many good judges of the game have said what you do off the ball is sometimes more important then what you do with it). As i have already said his running off the ball into space is very good but when he does not get it its wasted, i agree he is not the best defensive player but he is better then some ( including Dembele imo).

The problem he has is that when he has made runs into the space we have ( for the last season not moved the ball quick enough) its no surprise that he has looked better in the last couple of games as we have tended to move the ball a lot faster. If you look at some of the goals he has scored its because he has found space in the box and that is a skill ( for a M/F player) that we should encourage..

For me, saying Paulinho works hard and always makes himself available is like saying Townsend has a great shot and always makes the right decisions ... or Vertonghen has a great attitude and leads by example. Maybe he'll have a renaissance under Poch but all I saw last season was a half-hearted jogger, bottling tackles and hiding. You can blame his teammates for not finding him but I think he makes it almost impossible for them to do so, the BBC did a similar piece on him at the world cup which I thought was spot on.

Well we will have to disagree then.

To be honest I see where you're coming from mate. He should be producing more, because I've seen him enough to know he's got something about him and no amount of posters bad mouthing him on here will sway my opinion on that. I can only assume he's not playing in a system that suits him well enough...

I like to think of myself as a supporter of all our players. Sometimes this is misplaced and possibly naive support, but Paulinho really is on borrowed time as far as I'm concerned. Once a player starts starts playing for himself instead of the team then that's it for me. Paulinho put his Word Cup dream ahead of Spurs and for that reason I want him gone. Any good performances he puts in now are just bumping his price back up to something above nominal as far as I'm concerned.

One thing I noticed when he came on for Mason was that he doesn't move the ball around as well. He's more likely to move with the ball for 5-10 yards before passing than to hit the first time ball, I think he knows his passing isn't that good so plays it safe in deep area's, but this slows the game down. He has worked hard in his appearances thus far and I think he will do well in the pressing game, but imo he works best outside of the team, by which I mean as an extra not involved in the build up. He can do well ghosting into the box, but I don't expect to see him being the one playing the final pass unless it's on the counter.

Paulinho hides within himself and it shows on the pitch. I'd guess he was scared if his reflection...

He is clearly a player with some kind of ability but he really has no confidence or aptitude to suit the hustle and bustle of this league

Very good assessment, and I think I'd liken him to Frank Lampard as he is best suited to arriving into the box late like Lampard has done so well over the years (please dont jump on me, obviously not suggesting he's at Lampard's level). Whether we have a sysytem suitable for him is another question, but not writing him off completely just yet - especially if he is happy as a squad player....

Yep, both you and Cochise are IMO bang on the money.

Paulinho's strengths as far as I can see are primarily off the ball movement - timing runs into the box, arriving late, sniffing out 'being in the right place/right time' - and his athleticism. And IMO a confident Paulinho would be a GOOD end product player....

He's not an all round player though, far from it. Defensively he's quit shaky - he's athletic but seems to have bottled quite a lot of challenges. But more importantly.. Paulinho's general level of touch, technique, passing is relatively weak. He is an ineffective sideways passer: takes too many touches; moves the ball too slowly. Been a massive problem for him - and us - as quite often he's been assigned the key pivot position in the Spurs team - so often so much of our pattern of play has gone through him!! I've not seen many CMs who slow the play down as much as Paulinho does... oh wait there's also Mousa :(. It's typical Spurs that we've quite often had Paulinho & Dembele both in the same team - I think they have equally been a huge factor in how painfully slowly we have moved the ball at times over the past few years...Especially under AVB although thankfully not much recently.

So I agree - I think Paulinho is classic example of a system player - some strengths, some weaknesses, who will only really excel in a certain set up. Put good pass and move players around him, give him a clear and defined role (i.e. basically a poor man's Fat Frank), and I think he could be a statistical monster actually. Do this and get him confident and I think the other parts of his game would get better.

Not sure if this will be at Spurs. I think there is a player in there and I don't write him off like a lot of Spurs fans, but I think it's more likely than not that it won't happen for him here.

Yeah, it's got the point where any game where he isn't a total liability is seen as progress!

Is he athletic though, really? At best I'd say he has average pace .. and probably less for strength/power. I think he has good stamina in pressing but doesn't like tracking back.

I take it that is aimed at my previous post?

Considering more than one poster tried to justify Lamela's performance against Chelscum on the basis of one defence splitting pass which ALMOST came off, I don't think I am far off...

How does that make him a liability?

Oh and it was 3 passes that almost put one of our team mates through on goal one v one - to be pedantic

i have an ITK

remember my 90% record? well you can put your mortgage on this one

We are selling paulinho in December. either that or he goes on loan with an option to buy
