OMT ** Tottenham Hotspur v Wolves ** 29 December 2024.

So last season they all played games for us, all 14
Hell some even started at city away in what was one of our highlights
Some naturally played less than others but they all played games and come played some important ones too

We did not move on 14 players from last seasons PL squad

Postecoglu said when he first joined he thought our squad was too big. I think he likes working with a small core group of players. Most "system" managers do.
It was too big for no European football
It was
It was fudging huge
And that was excluding players in loan. I did the maths
We had 34 different outfield players named in squad and I think Tyrese Hall and reggie are the only ones who didn’t play a minute for us
Vicario was ever present but the bench changed a few times

Really

I did it the other day
1. Skipp
2. Royal
3. Lo Celso
4. Dier
5. Sessegnon
6. ndombele
7. Perisic
8. Tanganga
9. Hugo
Loaks
10. Gil
11. Solomon
12. veliz
13. scarlett
14. Hojberg
15. Donley

All played for us except for Hugo of course last season

This season we added to the squad the 4 signings and Yang, plus lankshear who didn’t make his debut last season

We also let a few youth guys go who were in the prem squad too in Santiago

And i think the squad is just right numbers wise now.. You certainly wouldn't want it to be bigger if you're actually planning on developing the likes of Moore, Gray, Lankshear and Bergvall by playing them:

............Solanke/Richarlison/Lankshear
Son/Werner..............Johnson/Odobert/Moore
.......................Kulu/Maddison
....Bissouma/Bentancur/Sarr/Gray/Bergvall

Udogie/Reguillon........................Porro/Spence
.............VDV/Davies/Romero/Dragusin

...........Vicario/Forster/Austin/Whiteman

You can argue about some of the quality but numbers wise it should be spot on.

And as I’ve said… that squad has never been available all season, not even for one game. I did think the same as you initially though
So it doesn’t work right now
Reggie is gone and is only here because no one wants to buy him so we’re laying his wages
Werner is a loan.
Moore and odebert are very much left sided by the way so we have an issue in the right and the left IMO
Davies has been our best defender when he has played and historically stayed fit, but… it should be a young CB there as 4th man , instead we have that as 3rd man

I make it 9 going by the registered squad list of that 9 some of the contributions were negligible and in some cases they were let go before seasons end as they were surplus to requirements - if you're going to include u21 players then the squad almost doubles in size and kinda renders the debate over depth obsolete.

We've added 4 (now 5) signings and brought Spence back in to the fold and in my mind only sold/loaned about 6/7 actual active members of last seasons squad.

Well I’ve name players that played above.
I haven’t included spurious under 21s. I actually named them and said they didnt play, unless you wanna tell me where I’m mistaken?
You may wanna say Scarlett and Veliz and Gil are under 21s i guess but they all came to us or have been playing men’s football
I fully agree Spence has been integrated, finally
And all the rest were sold, plus Rodon who was on loan all season at Leeds and never made our squad once
Here’s the data too

I don't always enjoy these "squad not big enough" narratives. Ange was only one centre half away from having a full quota of players at the start of this season.

Ange didn't operate with 18 outfield players. He had 23 and needs to be measured on those 23. That is his job.

Porro, Spence, VDV, Romero, Dragusin, Davies, Udogie, Reggie, Biss, Bents, Sarr, Gray, Bergval, Kulu, Madds, Johnson, Moore, Odobert, Sonny, Werner, Solanke, Richi, Lankshear

Ange is inexperienced managing heavy schedules and rotating players. Its one of the many reasons for the injuries.
His reliance on non-experienced assistant coaches doesn't put him in a good light either. He doesn't acknowledge his lack of experience and weakness in management.

BTW, I am surprised there has not been more criticism of the pathetic effort by Forster for their equaliser. Give this club a credible fudging goalkeeper until Vic is fit please!!!!

He has a really weird style of making saves in around his body -- it's like inspector gadget where he extends his arms or legs but doesn't move his body (see the save with his legs in the same match and that weird one vs Man Utd.)

That said, I don't think many keepers save Strand Larsen's shot due to the distance and the power. I certainly don't think it's scandalous that a second string keeper doesn't make that save.

I've lamented our injuries but I don't lament the size of the squad. It's the fact that it's pretty much isolated to a few particular positions. Our CBs and LWs both last season and this season. And then in the positions we don't have great backups, the players get run into the ground (ST, LB/RB) so it's about upgrading the quality.

But the idea we could do that in 3 transfer windows, as I've seen suggested here and on social media, is laughable. It's going to take at least 2 more IMO, but it'll never be perfected because football doesn't stand still.

I’m not convinced he can do that while playing his preferred system twice a week in the toughest league in the world. As we have seen for two seasons now, it breaks the players.

1. Skipp - agreed (1)
2. Royal - agreed (2)
3. Lo Celso - agreed (3)
4. Dier - was replaced in January with Dragusin so doesn't count as a player lost.
5. Sessegnon - no PL minutes so I'm guessing was not part of our PL squad.
6. ndombele - no PL minutes...
7. Perisic - injured early doors then let go in Jan, 99 PL minutes (4 being kind)
8. Tanganga - no PL minutes...
9. Hugo - was given the option to leave last summer but didn't take it up, not a consideration imv
10. Gil - 203 PL minutes, could argue that (5 being kind)
11. Solomon - < 200 PL minutes then loaned out in Jan (6 being kind)
12. veliz - 45 PL minutes, loaned out
13. scarlett - 20 PL minutes, loaned out
14. Hojberg - agreed (7)
15. Donley - 3 PL minutes

There's my thoughts on those let go and I have taken the minutes from Whoscored for reference.

I think that counts as about 7 or 8 active PL squad players and that's with stretching the meaning of the term.

Looking at the minutes played from last season I'd say, small sample size allowing, that Ange works with a group of +/- 20 players (lowest minutes played of that 20 being 425 (Dragusin which increases to 623 if you include Diers minutes from the first half of the season) Then there's a bunch on <200 minutes that I wouldn't really consider as a group that requires replacing.

On the squad Ange did rotate quite heavily in the early rounds of the EL and LC. Was criticised on here for rotating too much for the Coventry game IIRC.

I think part of the injury problems are related to our style of play, but only part of it.
