*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v AFC Bournemouth ***

We lacked a player in midfield who could receive the ball, turn and find a forward pass, not to mention a front forward who could win a duell, I don't think Richy won a single one. Johnson on the flank in this kind of match is no use, really, we became more dynamic out there and harder to read once Odo came on.

Porro was really poor. Thought Palinha was decent, VDV was good, Bentancur way to pedestrian again - Bergvall improved us a lot as he dared breaking lines. Should've started with him in hindsight.

I thought Kudus did allright. Worked his socks off. Was fouled a few times without getting the calls. Vic was excellent obviously.

Having said that, Bournemouth were fudging good today. If they can keep this up, which I guess they can't, they'll qualify for the CL.

A Xavi would've done wonders for us today. On to the next, no reason to sulk.

Kudus was really poor today IMO, he needs to learn to pass the ball once he has beaten a player and the space has opened up instead of holding on to the ball and trying to. Eat another player and then another one again if he beats the second one. MUCH worse than that though he didn’t bother to track Bournemouth’s left back (who I thought was superb) every time he went forward. Bournemouth were constantly creating overloads on our right hand side and Kudus wasn’t doing anything to help us defend that. I was really surprised that he stayed in the pitch. I would’ve booked him at halftime or, if not then, the first time he failed to do it in the second half once he’d had a rollicking at halftime time.
I know you were at the match, but the few times he did beat his man there was usually a cover defender in him and no one to really pass the ball to. A few times he did attempt to pass quickly but the cover defender always got a touch to the ball slowing the pass down or deflecting it. It was a good setup on Bournemouth's part as they knew he was the danger man the swamped him and gave him no real space or passing lanes to move the ball on.

However the other wing was much, much worse. If you think Kudus should have come off at half time, Johnson should have even made it that long.

nothing to do with international break,,,its what we do!
where do you think we will be at the end of this season? 10th maybe with no Sonny!
Tell me that I am wrong and why.
Sorry to be so negative...but it looks like same old spurzy to me...seriously how can you not have a shot in 45 minutes.
...at home as well lol...

He should be backed a million per cent. Today was beyond disappointing but he got dingdonged by Iraola. It happens.

No manager has the answers to such a degree that they’ll always make the right selections at the start of games and changes during games. Frank is no different.

There’s been enough so far, for me, to suggest we’ll have a good season under him with a few blips like this. He has to learn from it and I’m sure he will.
Iraola is a top manager IMHO and was my first choice to replace Ange. His teams press so well, and Semenyo is an absolute beast. I knew this one would be tough.

That said though, I have really warmed to TF and genuinely believe he will do very well. Don't forget the 1st half performance vs PSG and the game against City last week.

We really missed being able to bring on Solanke today, I think he holds the ball up better than Richarlison and without our number 10s lacked any guile in the middle of the park. In this kind of game you need that guile. Not having a creative number 10 was going to catch up with us eventually. Bad day at the office, we move on.

You even see it individual games - Bournemouth were great against Liverpool, then they tired and by the end, lost to a late surge. Same thing nearly happened against us, but we didn't have the quality to convert.

The last sentence being the main take away.

You can see Iraola's strengths and weaknesses in that approach - it's a madman rush of energy that tries to get the game wrapped up before the legs go. It works at the start of seasons when they have a lot of energy, it works at the end when everyone is exhausted. In between is when they basically crash because they start getting tired while others who aren't quite as gung-ho have reserves of energy to draw on.
I don't think the pressing style is his weakness. His teams are so well drilled, that they can overcome loss of key players and still be effective.

What he lacks though, is squad depth because he's at Bournemouth. But given the players Bournemouth sold in pre season, to come to us and dominate us like that shows a pretty effective system being implemented IMHO.

Drop some of our worst performers for the next game.
Show them that the performances are unnaceptable.
Odobert, udogie, solanke, bergvall etc.. can be given starts.

Observations from the stadium: Richarlison isn't a viable hold-up target. And I was disappointed in Romero as on-field captain. I didn't see him do anything to marshal the troops, to inject any energy or motivation or sense of urgency or game management, and I saw him get on the ref only once. He played decently, but seemed dejected and one-note. He had a bad fall after a contested header and didn't seem quite right after that, so maybe that was the reason, but as captain he can't play so within himself when 1-0 down and the team and crowd utterly lacking in energy.

We're finally home from the game after an horrendous drive back up the M1 and M6 in some horrid rain.

Totally agree with your post. After a great start in his first 2 games, that was back to the old-Richy, he was totally bullied off the ball today, we definitely need another option for when he has a day like today (Solanke is not it for me)

Really poor all round, to have no shot on or off target in the 1st half was shocking, until Bergvall came on we didnt look like scoring. 1st half I noticed their goalie doing some weird running exercises 30 yards from goal, quite frankly he could have read a book...

I really hope we didnt think we could just turn up today, Bournemouths performance at Anfield told me this was going to be tough. The ref did not help, he was beyond awful, they should have been down to 10 men on 54 minutes and he bottled it. That could have been a pivotal moment.

I would have taken 6pts from those 1st 3 games when the fixtures came out, but thats not really the point.

Two weeks now to stew on that before 'their' Cup final...hopefully when have 2 more new faces before Monday night to cheer us up

Having sold some of their best players over the summer.

Massive reality check today, not least when it comes to competing on both PL and CL fronts simultaneously. We still have too many mediocre players in the squad.

Think it was a bit of a perfect storm game. No Maddison, no Kulusevski and Simons not ready yet. One of the best pressing teams in the league and they smartly pressed by shutting down our right hand side (where we had our only real ball progressors).

I think even a single player (like Simons) would make a massive difference in a game like that.

Frank didn't seem to have any answers, perhaps because it's still so early. But I was surprised not to see changes at half time. Or real tactical tweaks in our buildup in the first half or at half time that I could spot at least.

Don't think the players were particularly bad as individuals. Most of them did about as well as can be expected in the circumstances.

Johnson and Richarlison were especially terrible. I do think their inability to either control or hold the ball really hampered us. It just made it super easy for Bournemouth to triple up on Kudus. Simons makes a difference but I don't think despite how good he is that he changes everything when the problem players would likely still be on the pitch even with Simons present.

I actually thought he got the starting XI wrong as well as not making subs early enough. Captain hindsight and all that but I think he should have gone with the more aggressive/progressive line-up we played against Burnley rather than the "contain and counter" type line up we played against City. I'd have started with Bergvall for example.

Really bad game today but excellent in the last 3. Too early to make sweeping judgements on a new regime.

Times like this call for abit of bottle and calm
Right far too early, he is still learning the players capabilities etc, I expect the likes of Bergvall will slowly start more as time goes on.
