Official - Holtby

I've always wanted him in our team. I would still prefer him in our team to Bentaleb. I think we loaned out the wrong player.

Didn't he get one game as a central midfielder under Sherwood and was rather poor?

I'm just not sure if he's ready to play that role for us in the league at this point, whereas Bentaleb is.

Like Townsend last season I think a PL loan could end up being the deciding factor for Holtby's future Spurs career. As an attacking midfielder/number 10 he was effectively competing with Eriksen, Ade/Soldado, Lamela, Paulinho and Sigurdsson for us and was unlikely to ever get a good run of games. Without a good run of games he was always unlikely to push on to the next level and prove himself good enough to be a starter.

Edit: We looked a bit open in the first 10 minutes against Everton yesterday, but after that we looked fairly solid. Can you imagine how that would have looked with Holtby partnering Paulinho in central midfield? I think we would have been considerably less solid.

but how many chances did Holtby get??? Bentaleb has practically been given every minute of every match under Sherwood, full faith has been placed in him even if he plays well or not. Thats a bit different from one game play well or your out

I think Bentaleb has been performing well all along. Sherwood gave several players a chance in central midfield in those early games including Holtby, Eriksen and iirc Sig got some time there too. Bentaleb came on against Southampton and United and he did his job in a composed and mature way. Others showed less I thought. Holtby might have "deserved" more chances, perhaps he deserved a 5 game run in the team in a role like that. But you don't always get what you deserve and Bentaleb deserved that chance more than Holtby I thought as Bentaleb actually took his chances and impressed when he got a little game time.

AVB didn't give Holtby a chance in central midfield in the league, Sherwood gave him one game, at Fulham so far he's played in a more advanced role too and competition for central midfield spots is a lot easier there. It might be that Holtby is just a couple of games away from being ready to start as a central midfielder in the PL, but that seems very speculative. With the competition for places from Sandro, Dembele, Paulinho and Capoue in addition to Bentaleb of course I don't think Holtby would have gotten those chances you speak of even if he had stayed.

Holtby can press though, has good movement and an eye for a pass. You don't create 4 goals in any game, even if against a poor Villa side, if you don't have something about you.

He has proved his movement in other games. The most memorable example being his movement for Bale's strike a against WBA last season. He moved and took a defender with him, so Bale could have the shot. A shot which resulted in a spectacular goal!

I seem to back the unpopular players though. I think I see things differently, maybe I'm just misguided.

Being a central midfielder defensively is about a lot more than just pressing though!

It's about being disciplined, about positioning, personally I think a bit of quickness to get close enough to make a tackle or block is important, certainly being able to tackle well is a good thing. A bit of strength isn't misplaced either as you often end up in those 50/50 duels fighting to gain or keep possession.

In time I could see Holtby develop into a central midfielder instead of a 'number 10', but I don't quite see him flourishing in that position at this point.

Holtby appears to have been very disciplined in his advanced role for Fulham yesterday, which maybe begs questions about well how he was briefed whilst with us. Be that as it may, given all the options we have at central and defensive midfield could it be that the advanced, creative role, where there is much less competition for places (Eriksen and Siggy), his energy and eye for a pass could be harnessed to support a lone striker, not to mention his ability to shoot on sight, is where his Spurs future lies?

I think we loaned him out correctly. He isn't at the moment going to play 90 minutes week in and week out which is what has hindered him in my mind. He always looks a yard off the pace imo so this loan will get him fully in tune with the rigours of this league on a weekly basis. We then have a player who comes back to us and is up to speed ready to prove a point next season.

I wouldn't be surprised if he became one of our top performers next season provided he is kept at the club.

Only if you ignore Lamela and a two striker option.

I don't think you are giving Bentaleb enough credit. Yesterday he played as our defensive screen for most of the game until Capoue came on and whilst not as good as someone like Sandro he completed his fair share of defensive work. Holtby wouldn't have been suited to that role, he isn't that good defensively and excels further up the pitch, for me they aren't vying for the same spot. At the Etihad Holtby played as part of a midfield three and was caught out defensively, looking just as uncomfortable there as Bentaleb.

Bentaleb has come in and proven himself good enough to hold his current position. I think people are not liking Bentaleb because of Sherwood, when really he looks like he's ready to be playing in the EPL. I'm not saying he is first choice 11 material just yet, but what he does give us back there is something no other player in out squad does and that includes Holtby.

I am not slating Holtby as I can see that he can bring a lot to the team, but not in that deep position. He needs more freedom and does his best work higher up the pitch.

Pretty sure Everton ripped us apart time and time again, same as City and Palace in the first half. The boy has obviously got some talent but when we do not have the ball he is shocking. I think people on here are giving him far to much credit just because he is one of our youngsters. He is no better than Livermore and i have to say Livermore is much better defensively.

I see Lamela more in competition with Lennon and Townsend out wide. I'll admit i forgot Paulinho, probably because too many of his performances invite it!

Sherwood has explicitly stated that he sees Lamela (and Chadli) as options for that 'number 10' slot behind a lone striker when talking about how we would cope without Defoe.
