Official - Defoe

Re: Jermain Defoe

Anyone notice we seem to have a great striker and a below par team or vice versa?

When we had Lineker, we had the likes of Pat Van Den Hauwe and Vinny Samways (granted we had Gazza-but he ran the team, and after he left we got Durie 8-[.

When we had Berba we had Teemu, when we had Modric we had Pav/Defoe.

I think the core of our team this year is hard to beat and extremely well drilled, we just need a striker with a little 'je nais se quoi' - unfortunately you pay a premium for that. I'm not knocking Defoe, but he is such a purple patch player, we need consistency.

Teemu was a good player. Unfortunately when we had Berba our central midfielders were Jenas, Zokora and O'Hara. Your point is a good one though, we signed Berbatov the summer we sold Carrick, and sold him the summer we signed Modric, imagine how good we could have been if we'd had him alongside either of those two. Same with Sheringham who left the summer we signed Ginola.

With Defoe, it's second half of the season syndrome. He had a great first half, like in 04/05, 06/07, 09/10 and 11/12, but in all of those seasons his form has massively dipped in the second half. The only seasons he's done well in the second half of the season have been 03/04 when we first signed him, 07/08 when he went to Portsmouth. I see no reason why he won't dip again especially as we have played him for 90 minutes in most games and he will start to tire.

It does seem to have been that way for Spurs since the 80s that whenever we have the makings of top 3 team that ManU or another of the G14 clubs come along and cherry pick our best players with that lure of astronomical wages + European football. We then use that money to buy another talented player who then comes to prominence and ends up moving to the G14... ](*,)

Fingers crossed that when we finally move into the new stadium we'll have the revenue to come close to those G14 salaries and be able to afford a couple of top notch Forwards to convert all those chances Bale, Lennon and Dembele keep creating... In the meantime hopefully AVB can help Defoe become less streaky in his goal scoring so that he finishes the season as strongly as he started.

Re: Jermain Defoe

Jermain Defoe missed Tottenham's shock FA Cup defeat to Leeds because he is nursing a secret pelvic injury.

The England striker has been playing through the pain barrier is a desperate bid to help keep his club's season on track.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy must surely now dip into the transfer market for a new striker ahead of Thursday's deadline with Emmanuel Adebayor away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Defoe DID train last week but has been carrying his condition for some time with sources suggesting he may need surgery.

Tottenham responded to widespread doubts about his fitness last week by posting pictures of the striker after training on their official Twitter feed.

But Defoe is understood to have had treatment within the last few days to put him in line to play against Norwich on Wednesday night.

There is even surprise at the club that the striker played in last week's Premier League game at home to Manchester United.

Defoe played all 90 minutes of that match, which finished 1-1. But Clint Dempsey played - and scored - in the centre-forward position against Leeds yesterday.

Re: Jermain Defoe

I bet he doesn't play Wednesday. Or starts and comes off.

leaving us Thursday to find a replacement.

Always the last day.............

Or Adebayor returns on Thursday and crisis averted.

The reality is Defoe will play with an injection if necessary against Norwich and will continue to until Ade comes back.

If Adebayor comes back on thursday and is playing as badly as he was before he left then no. The crisis has not been averted.

To be fair, the same could be said about Defoe, but he has been falling short for a shorter period of time.

Would explain his recent form/some of the moments he hasn't quite stretched enough...

Again though, Steff, it's The Mirror reporting this.

I actually suspect they are completely wrong, and Defoe actually has Rabies.*
