Official - Defoe

Re: Jermain Defoe

Thanks very much, but I meant top 5 spurs goalscorers...

Oh OK.

Here you go then...

Tottenham Hotspur All-Time Top Goalscorers Records 1882-2012

...with a bit of luck, Defoe should be Tottenham's fifth highest goalscorer by the end of this season.

Makes you stop and wonder why there's so many people on here who think he isn't good enough for us or any other Top Four club.

Doesn't have enough to his game beyond goals, is the obvious answer, I would have thought. Even then, I note his overall strike rate based on those stats is only a goal every 2 and a half games. Which is really very, very average.

His goal ratio is on par with Chris Armstrong though, very good but not enough for a pure goal scorer.
Love Defoe, and think he's important for us, but if we're gonna go places his role would have to be off the bench - similiar to Hernandez at United.
He could be in any club squad in the world, but wouldn't be a starter at Real, Barca, Bayern, Dortmund, PSG, Juventus, United, City, Chelsea or even Arsenal.

Re: Jermain Defoe

I have nothing but respect for Defoe. He always comes across well in interviews. Positive attitude and 100% loyal to the team.

Of course he very occasionally gets disappointed with being subbed, but that's because in his head he always thinks he is capable of scoring a goal like yesterday (he has a point).

Considering he has had many managers not 100% behind him and not seen as 1st choice, he still try's everything to look after himself, train hard and improve his game. Always sharp and ready when needed, plus looks confident despite any off pitch disappointment,... (compare this to torres)
He is a finisher, he is greedy, he is always looking to make the space to smash it, imo his body strength is underatted. That is it. I don't think we are going to teach the old dog new tricks now. If his decision making (to pass it) was better he wouldn't be at tottenham. But i appreciate the stuff he can do, not many teams have an out and out goal machine, and when he's flying it can only be a help to us.

Except for the countless 'might have to leave in January to save my career' articles just about every season after 3 consectuive starts on the bench.

This thread starts on one of this - have a look at the OP

Personally, I think if a bigger club came in - he'd be off in an instant, much like Keane did and this loyal flimflam is exactly that. He already did it once with Pompey.

Re: Jermain Defoe

Michael Owen could've destroyed that table.. He probably had 140 of those 149 by the time he was 23/24!

What a shame.. ok he had plenty injuries but man he really made some bad career decisions hey?

For someone who's not that interested in football, but loves making tons of money to fund his other interests, I think he's done alright. Shame for him he's wasted most of his money.

Re: Jermain Defoe

How can any modern day premier league footballer have wasted their money? Unthinkable really..
Imagine going on a 7 day spending spree racking up 100k then on the Friday you have another 100k in the bank!.. every week!.. for several years!!

Mind-Blowing

Edit: This isn't related to Owen in any way, I'm not up to date with his financial history... just thinking out loud lol

He bought a whole street for his family to live in, didn't he? Spends a lot of time and money on horses as well. Footballers don't tend to be financial geniuses, hence some rather ludicrous investments.

Mins on the pitch is much better. Loads of appearances as sub, or being taken off before the 90.

He probably has a better goalscoring recored than Ronney on a purely like for like basis and Rooney has played in better teams with better players.

He would be better than 1 in 2 if he had been a starter. He has also scored some cracking goals for us.

3 great goals this season already. Yesterdays , the one against Reading and my favourite his first against Maribor. Nice one against Chelsea as well.

Which generally tend to cancel each other out. Which means starts v goals is usually fairly close to minutes v goals. And on that he'd still be closer 1 in 3 in the league than 1 in 2. In reality, I think he goes on runs where he is a 1 in 2 striker but he'll also have considerable barren spells where he's more like 1 in 4. So his average ends up about 1 in 2.5. As was said... average. Bent had a better strike rate and yet nearly everyone could see the point with him: goals weren't enough. What else did he contribute? At least not enough to be a regular starter anyway.

Re: Jermain Defoe

Fancy that a striker who ONLY scores goals, you have to laugh.

Hardly renowned for his work-rate, tracking back or assists, was he?

The interesting thing about Jermain Defoe is that he scored 64 goals in 177 appearances during his first spell with Tottenham from 2004-2008.

And he's scored 64 goals in 140 appearances so far during his second spell with us from 2009-2012.

In other words, he's actually getting better.
