Official - Defoe

Re: Defoe at 30

Is he worth keeping past January though, if we bring in a proper like-for-like young understudy for Ade? I think he'd've gone in the summer if we'd've got Leandro.

Does he want to sit around being 3rd choice impact sub at his age, and will Levy want to keep paying his wage/watch him devalue so quickly?

Nope, we wouldn't have signed Ade mate...

Re: Jermain Defoe

Indeed.

Defoe got an assist today for Caulker's goal, which gives him 4 goals & 2 assists in the League this season.

No other English player has bettered that.

Sorry but this is exactly why assists and stats in general are only 50% true. There is no way in fudge Defoe meant that as an assist or pass to Caulker - he simpy wanted to blast as hard as he can and got lucky with the cushion bounce

Re: Jermain Defoe

Hold on, weren't you going through extraordinary lengths to use stats to prove Tom Huddlestone's shooting was crap??

No - I presented statistics about it which is only half of the story in any argument, imv

Statistics is a nice reference point in such 'debates' but should never be considered as factual proof to anything because it is almost always 'a-contextual' (as many actually argued as much back in that thread)

Re: Defoe at 30

So where does he stand now? Today he officially joins Brad, Carlo, Scott and William in the Chesterfield chairs and port room at the training ground.

Was the introduction of Ade today a metaphorical passing of the batton, a bit like the inclusion of Lloris over Friedel?

Defoe has actually been playing the best football of his career this season, but at the same time still demonstrating why he's never been first choice for us/a top 4 calibre player.

Is he capable of adapting his game enough to have an indian summer to his career either for us, or someone like QPR or Fulham, or is it just a slippery slope from here (like e.g. Lineker, Owen and Keane before him who all hit a sudden wall about his age)?

Lineker was banging in around 25 a season for Spurs when he was Defoe's age

Re: Jermain Defoe

Lineker was in his second of three seasons at Spurs when he was same age as Defoe is now.
Came from a season with 24 league goals, 26 in total.
"This" season he scored "only" 15 league goals, 19 in total.
The following season was one of his career best scoring 28 in the league, 35 in total.
Could still have kept it up for two more years in my opinion in stead of moving to Japan,
was due to family reasons and his sick son wasn't it?

Michael Owen is only three years older than Defoe,
was finished long before he came to Defoe's age.
Like Fowler before him, could say same about Torres even if he's still decent - the Liverpool striker curse.

Well stated. Stats alone are useless. They need an argument to give them context and they supplement the argument.

For instance, the team scoring the most goals in a game wins. But the team scoring the most goals in a season doesn't necessarily win the championship. The goalscoring stat alone is insufficient, but only useful in context.

Incredibly enough, Emirates Marketing Project once finished as the First Division's highest goalscorers for the season (1937-38 ) but were still relegated.

Indeed.

And incredibly they were the reigning champions. I doubt lightening will strike twice.

Re: Jermain Defoe

Interesting stats of leading scorers in the EPL to date to see how Defoe stacks up against his compatriots:
He's #5 for goals, #3 for offsides, on a goals per min ratio he's better than crouch :)

Re: Jermain Defoe

Less than a third of his shots on target is a poor stat. It's my main complaint of him really, the amount of shots he takes blasting it into a player in front of him or swiping at it off balance when there are passing options. I don't mind a player being greedy, but being greedy and wasteful is pretty annoying. Hunger for goals is a good thing, but you need to use your brain, he could be on an even better level of assists without affecting his goals tally if he recognised when he is taking a shot for a shot's sake and looked up instead.

Re: Jermain Defoe

I wouldnt try and change Defoe, he is who he is. Right now, he's still the man I'd have up front.

Re: Jermain Defoe

the standout one for me is berbatov - those are amazing stats considering his age; he's started well for fulham, and is looking like he enjoys his football again.

Love the guy but this post is 100% accurate.

LOL, I see the point you're making, but equally, having some where some of his 'on-a-platter' assists have ended up at the feet of others, well, err, let's just say I'll play his % game right now.
