Official - Defoe

Re: Jermain Defoe

This Sunday seems easy. Start Defoe and give Adebayor a half hour, either with or instead of Defoe.

Re: Jermain Defoe

In a zonal defense, the general idea is that you should not follow an attacker's run into the zone of your center back partner. It is pretty much the first thing you learn I think. So in this case, Ferdinand should have picked up Defoe, and Evans should have focused on Bale's run.

Ferdinand was higher up the pitch than Defoe, so Evans couldn't pass Defoe on to him (Defoe was running in behind him).

Re: Jermain Defoe

some teams/players will choose man-to-man marking and others zonal marking, no right or wrong there. running intelligently to create space for self and others is what strikers normally do...nothing special to single out, or get excited about. with players we have a team like us we should be looking to get 2-4 goals every match, we need to convert possession into goals. Defoe is scoring but it is still not enough for us.

So where does he stand now? Today he officially joins Brad, Carlo, Scott and William in the Chesterfield chairs and port room at the training ground.

Was the introduction of Ade today a metaphorical passing of the batton, a bit like the inclusion of Lloris over Friedel?

Defoe has actually been playing the best football of his career this season, but at the same time still demonstrating why he's never been first choice for us/a top 4 calibre player.

Is he capable of adapting his game enough to have an indian summer to his career either for us, or someone like QPR or Fulham, or is it just a slippery slope from here (like e.g. Lineker, Owen and Keane before him who all hit a sudden wall about his age)?

Re: Defoe at 30

Defoe isn't slowing down, if that's what you're implying.

He's never been that quick tbh. Accleration over 2 yards - yes, but not quick over 10 or more.

His body will start declining though - does he have the other aspects to his game to compensate is the issue. Keane, who was a far better player, didn't (much to his frustration and ours).

Re: Defoe at 30

Same as before. Decent but not top 4 standard (ie starter for a top 4 team).

Frustrating given the immense potential that he showed early in his career that he's never gone on to establish himself at international level or in the starting 11 of a top 4 team

Worth keeping but Adebayor as a starter gives us more and is better suited to the team

Re: Defoe at 30

It all depends on how he looks after himself - his diet, his training, whether he drinks alcohol or not. We've seen plenty of players, the likes of Eto'o, Giggs and Henry still be very fast after their 30th birthday. Defoe has never been in that Bale/Lennon/Walker elite of pace, but his movement is still an important part of his game. His hold up play is good for a small man, but I don't see him having a real long term future in the team if he does lose his pace.

Remind me where we finished in 2009-10, and who our top scorer was?

Is he worth keeping past January though, if we bring in a proper like-for-like young understudy for Ade? I think he'd've gone in the summer if we'd've got Leandro.

Does he want to sit around being 3rd choice impact sub at his age, and will Levy want to keep paying his wage/watch him devalue so quickly?

The season where our midfield bossed everything, and our strikeforce was absolutely terrible? Where he scored about 10 in two games against Wigan and Hull, then about 6 across the rest of the season?

18 league goals is 18 league goals. No Tottenham player has scored that many in a 38 game season since Lineker. Even if he did score 8 in two games near the start of the season, they were still goals that won us important points in the race for 4th place. I'll remind you that we failed to score against Wigan at home in the 08/09 season and the 10/11 season, as well as failing to score against Hull at home in the 09/10 season, so it's not as though the goals should be discredited. The fact is, had we failed to win those two games then we wouldn't have got 4th place. You get the same number of points for beating a team that gets relegated as you do for beating a team that wins the title (who Defoe also scored in a win against that season).

Re: Jermain Defoe

Gutterboy, no amount of wishful thinking is going to make him leave the club. You've been saying it for 3 years, but he's still not playing for Fulham or QPR etc.

Hes started enough games for us over the last 4 years to show he is good enough for a top 4/5 club. Slightly unlucky that the game has changed and the top clubs like to play 1 up top which is not something a player of his build is suited to (but he's better than most his size at it).

We are lucky to have him, he's playing as we'll as ever, he's still quick with or without the ball and it seems like AVB will play him more than Harry.

And again, no amount of twisting the stats is going to convert anyone to your opinion. You can do that with every player. Most goal scorers go on runs where goals come quick.

Oh and 'about 10' - is that stupidness or laziness ? 5+3 = about 10 does it? Was it really that hard or does '8' not work much in your favour? Considering there is still another 10 goals to justify...

Re: Jermain Defoe

Oh and '6 across the rest of the season' ... Really? Even then 'about 10' + '6 across the rest of the season' is still a couple short of his real total.

No wonder you don't rate him if that's what you see in your head. If you were like the rest of us and would use the real facts, you'd probably like the guy.
