Micky van de Ven

It's because he didn't make a genuine attempt for the ball so you can get the double punishment. Which does make a bit of mockery of Romero's recent sending off as his was a genuine attempt for the ball, a ball he even got to first. Yet he was still sent off.
Yeah, I get it's the rules, although this kind of holding happens at every corner in every PL game, and is extremely rarely punished.

I just think it’s a double punishment, as surely a penalty should be enough compensation for the denied goalscoring opportunity - if the foul isn't a red card foul in itself.

I think it is fair with a red if the opponent is denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, but outside the box, so it's just a free kick.

Meanwhile the Woolwich Wanderers are yet concede a penalty or have a player sent off despite perpetrating multiple acts of GBH this season! Hopefully if our Micky moves this summer he don’t end up there though!

Thankfully the refs in Europe are a tad more forgiving of our Belgians…

Someone made the comparison to Vertonghen under AVB (last few months) and Sherwood, I think that’s quite accurate. Something’s clearly not clicking for him at the moment, mentally. Doesn’t mean that under a new regime he won’t come back to life again like we saw with JV.
