Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

great defences win leagues

Indeed the best teams are always built from the back, we have had many great/good forward players over the years but our defence has usually been dodgy and the main reason we have been mostly a cup team. What we have now is a solid defence and from there we have the opportunity to push on.

keeping a stable CB pair and keeper helps a lot. something that poch wasn't able to do until alderweireld arrived.
also having dier and dembele in CM helps a lot in providing cover. we don't have that soft centre and even our attacks are starting to look bolder.

Yes I can keep hearing Laurence Fishbourne's AKA 'Morpheus' voice reverberating in my head regarding spurs....

'Their beginning to believe...'

regardless of how people want to be ...no-one can deny that we have a come a long way in the short amount of time Poch has been here. If we keep our core and add one or two, drill into our players, hunger, desire, passion the will to win or die trying...

We can achieve great things...there I said it.

Am expecting us to finish 4th and one of the remaining three English teams in the CL to win the bl00dy thing so that we don't qualify again

It doesn't work like that any more. We would only lose out if both the Champions and Europa Leagues were won by English clubs who finished outside of the top four.

UEFA amended the rule so that up to 5 teams from any nation can enter the CL each season.

However, the sexy thing to happen (which would top even the anguish of the Mind the Gap season) is for Chelsea to once again fluke a CL plus Liverpool / ManU to win the Europa so we once again end up missing out!

Hell it would be even more sexy - and the way things are going this season that much more likely - to find ourselves getting squeezed into fifth place by someone like Palace or Watford.

I used to be overtly optimistic about Tottenham's chances back in my youth but the repeated trauma of seeing us lose so many FA Cup semi-finals over the past quarter century has showed me that is just hubris, which leads to nemesis.

There is a natural progression this season. Last season, we showed a lot of spirit and guts but were quite lucky on occasion to win some of those games with last minute goals. This season, the defence and the performances overall have been far better, today aside of course.

I really like how Pochettino gives players a real chance of succeeding by giving them multiple games when giving them a chance.

So many managers/head coaches seem to throw a play into the mix and if it doesn't work that's that. Sherwood (at the risk of re-starting old discussions) was the absolute polar opposite to Pochettino in this regard.

I really think for players like Carroll, Alli, Onomah, Lamela, Dier etc it has helped and helps knowing that one poor or average performance will not mean being dropped out of contention again. If Pochettino has judged a player as good enough for a role/position he will stick by that conviction and give them time on the pitch to prove themselves.

It can be frustrating at times. I really couldn't see the merit of giving Townsend game time over Lamela last season. The frustration with some of now expelled players at the start of last season was also obvious. But as a strategy I think it really adds confidence to our young players and helps them play their natural game instead of being worried about making mistakes.

Latest example is Carroll. Also the latest example of fans not rating him or not understanding why Pochettino keeps giving him game time... But he's growing with the experience he's gaining from it. Only time will tell if he ends up like Dier or Lamela and goes from strength to strength or at the other end of the scale with Capoue, Adebayor and Townsend. But he's being given a fair chance to prove himself good enough.
