Mathys Tel

Agree completely.

Our midfielders are pretty decent when they want to be, it's just they aren't consistent. Funny how some after a few bad games say Sarr is bad yet we needed him to come on and win the game effectively for us against Brentford.

I'll be one to hold my hands up and say I am emotional which may come as a shock to most on here, jokes aside we are no where near complete and Ange said it will take a few more windows didn't he.

Also not all transfers work out so these fans that want instant turnaround with 7 signings, go back to when Bale was sold and we spunked all of the money on those signings.

Lamela and Eriksen can only really be seen as the successful ones there IMO.

I also think if you gradually do it rather than instantly you don't have too many cooks spoiling the broth kind of thing.

We addressed 3 of our weaknesses and would say we have a few more left maybe a strong tackling CM and maybe a LB, but Spence looks equally comfortable there.

A solid assessment good sir, I think we're on the same page.

I have had many a phase of being rather emotional on here, now apathy or lukewarm positivity is my bag depending on the day!

It's always a work in progress and the signs are we're giving the manager more to work with, hopefully it'll work out with him but if not, the squad we're building is moving in the right direction

I can’t stand Jamie redknapp he always speaks like he’s constipated and about to fart…. His small hands weird me out too. On top of that he is a disingenuous clam

Quoting him was painful. But potentially he is passing on genuine info on Tel from Kane. Just ignore everything else he says!

Chadli was a decent signing too

Didn’t we make a book profit on the Brazilian lad too?

His name escapes me.
The one that went to Barca in the end? He got sent off against Liverpool the eve of AVB's sacking. Paulinho thats it (I had to google). We bought him for £17m (knew that) but had to google that we sold him to China for £9m so a loss.

Forgot about Chadli, he was alright tbf.

Good signing to complete a solid window. I guess we're just hoping some midfielders will suddenly becone consistently reliable players, but we can't fix it all in a couple (reads 4) windows.

What we need more than this is 2 things

1) We need our engine room players to be fit and available so they can be replaced in the 90 mins and rotate between the games. There has not been a single time all season when we've gone 3 or 4 games where Biss, Bents, Sarr, Berg and even Gray are sharing the 90 mins and then switching places between games. Imagine the intensity we could create in every minute of every game if Ange could get all 5 of these guys sharing the minutes. Biss's hamstring, Sarr's calf, Bents suspension etc have cost us.

2) Ange's midfield tactics also mean that all 3 of his on-pitch midfielders can be out of the game. We can use the word consistency against the players, but the manager needs to hold his hand up as well. Ange cost us a point at Leicester because Bents was in a natural position but Berg and Sarr were AWOL. They were doing as they've been taught in his system. Just like when Gibbs White carried the ball 30 yards unchallenged in that loss. Another point lost there. That's why playing the double pivot of Bents and Biss was like night and day. It's not just about the players, it's massively about Ange's demands in his mid to high press.

I think we'll add more quality over time, but I don't think the personnel are as bad as everyone makes out.

Not going to lie, seeing the club hoovering up the best young talent in Europe is a really exciting silver lining to the cloud of this season. Particularly seeing Gray, Bergvall and Moore perform and grow into the PL and Europe. Light at the end of the tunnel and the *painful rebuild* is in full swing, albeit over 6 years after Poch said it was necessary...

It's not that the personnel is that bad, but far too many of the players are in the potential bracket than the established quality one and some of our established ones aren't good enough and need moving on.

Yes we might win the much coveted 'Best future team in five years' trophy, but we need at the very least an experienced midfield general and ideally one or two more if we really want to achieve quantifiable things rather than just bragging about how good an U21 team we have on paper.....

2-3 players who are more experienced than the 18-19 year olds come the summer? I think that would be really good.

Being fit and available comes under the idea of being consistently reliable doesn't it? But even then, if you aren't of the required quality, always being available isn't really enough to justify a place in a team trying to be a top one.

We'll wait and see whether we can make a stable, top quality team with our current personnel in midfield. It's been my view for quite a while now that whilst Sarr has the potential to become something really special, Biss and Bents are not suddenly going to become top class overnight. It's honestly just a bonus if they aren't embroiled in some controversial off the pitch stuff, and aren't giving goals away directly from their errors or getting ludicrous red cards / suspensions out of pure stupidity.

However this is the Tel thread, and admittedly it was I who posited my general roundup of the transfer window dealings along with my general thoughts about this particular deal!

If there's an appropriate thread to discuss this in feel free to @ me with your response, but it is probably an agree to disagree if we rate players differently. Both Bents and Biss are moments players, they're more likely to lose us games in those moments rather than win us games imo.

I posted it already somewhere, but I'd compare Tel to Kulu, but with a more potent shot. Obviously a bit younger (5 years younger than Kulu), just as strong, just as happy running at defenders, just as powerful, and able to bustle and trick his way through.

The question is whether Tel can take that step on to become an elite finisher. The video above with Kane's second hand info is interesting, suggests he has an ethic and determination - which is what made Kane. Hopefully our coaches can help to unleash his potential. Tel is a bit raw, but at 19 what would you expect!

Great signing. We'll need to show some patience, but we have a very decent PL player as is, and if he can refine his play, he could become a top player.
Premature comparison to world class player klaxon (on my part).

He reminds me a bit of Bale. Fast, strong, excellent ball striking technique. Not a consistent "dribbler" who beats people with skill time and time again, but certainly capable of some flair and good close control. Give him a bit of space and most defenders will really struggle because of that combination of pace and strength. Give him a bit of space and his ball striking well cause a world of problems through crossing or shooting. If things come together they could really come together in a massive way.

Will be interesting to see where Ange ends up using him. I'm not as down on him playing on the right as some seem to be, seems to have quite a bit of what's needed to work as a right footer on the right in this kind of system. But probably striker or on the left are more natural for him.

I guess my point always is that when we buy that perfect midfield general that everyone keeps talking about they will be part of the same rotation and substitution system because of the tactics. They will burn out just like our current lot do due to the intensity. We're hitting a crossroads with Bents and Biss's contracts anyway, so decisions will need to be made. I absolutely see Spurspinter's point on the our main 3. I'm not sure 2 of them are moment players based on the off the ball work they get through, but both can be upgraded. I also see the potential in Sarr but would say he's been our most guilty midfielder this season. Him leading with his heart over his head has cost us a fair few goals. We need that kid to mature very quickly and we have a different proposition on our hands.

I'm expecting the summer transfer window to be where we switch about 3 squad positions. Tel for Werner permanently is probably going to be a no-brainer but I would guess he becomes Son's replacement eventually. One of Biss and Bents for a new midfielder is another. The third is Reggie for a new LB.

Our squad is getting really stacked at this point, but in a good way.

I actually think that our primary forward players will be Solanke, Richi, Johnson, Sonny, Tel and Odobert within a few weeks. I have no clue in which combo's they will play though.

It will be Moore that misses out on match day squads along with Werner.

I agree that he is best on the left side or as ST but with angeball he needs players that can take more than 1 place under the game. And Tel can do this.. he can change up with the left and right side in a game. But I dont belive we will start him on the right side.

I can see the fans getting right on his back if he doesn’t hit the ground running. They are salty that he made a u turn.

Are they?

I agree that our fans will get on his back quickly if he doesn't hit the ground running (that seems to be some of our fans M.O.) but I haven't seen much griping about the U-turn personally. Genuine question as I don't drift through other forums or podcasts.
