Lucas Bergvall

He was the first one over to console Dragusin after the red. Not the first time he's shown character and awareness. He's not some nervous 18 year old kid flabbergasted by how he ended up playing for us and just trying to hang on. He knows he belongs and shows character both in his play and elsewhere.

Gray too... So many situations where losing the ball could have been a very costly mistake. So confident, so composed, so much quality. Didn't phase him at all.

When Ange said they were signed for their potential, but also for what they can do this season he meant it.

Really looking forward to seeing more of both of them.

Don't think it will do any damage. He'll understand why it happened, the coaches and teammates will understand that it was difficult for him and support him.

He wants to be a player at this level, that much seems obvious. He has the talent too. Part of that is taking one for the team like this (unless you're already one of the best players). Think he'll handle it fine.
Agreed. Surely very disappointing, but he'll be fine and will get his chance again soon.

Yeah both of them are the real deal. Not just “kids with promise” but two of the best young players in the world.

Bergval is probably disappointed not to get a chance to shine, but his mentality is way too strong for this to effect him.

I’d also put Moore in this category, just a bit younger / less ready.

I think that was a bad move on Ange’s part, i know we went on to win but that could damage this lad long term.
What a terrible tactical move by Ange to keep on the full of running (and goal scorer) Sarr, Bissouma who had a great game and we win 3-0. He's a talented boy, but there would be far more whinging had we lost - Ange made the call he thought best to win the game and we did.

It's football, this has happened to many a player - if it really does 'damage' the lad then he's probably not got the mentality to make it at this level (seems pretty obvious he has though).....

Fully agreed on his mentality (from what we can see from the outside). Football is full of disappointments and dealing with that is part of the job and also part of the learning curve for younger players.

On talent no doubt Moore is in the same category. On looking like he belongs at this level already, a bit too early to say.

The guy is an exceptional talent and it was ridiculous to take him off yesterday, completely broke the link to the forward players, and ultimately putting us under more pressure than needed, especially against a team from Azerbaijan.

When really, we could have taken Davis off (for Udogie), moved to three at the back and over run them in midfield, pinning them in their own half.

AS others have said, he has a great attitude, quick feet, and good footballing brain with vision too.

Needs to play more and would certainly start him over Sarr, along side Maddison. As both are entirely different kinds of creative attacking players.

In hindsight on a 3-0 win you make this comment?

We never play 3 at the back but we should a man down?

Reality is Bervall is a very young, talented player but he lacks experience and it makes much more sense to move to a model we know, with players more experienced in their roles (especially in the back line), same as the decision to pull off Johnson (who is in great form) because Deki is a better fighter in a team that would obviously tire later in game.

No it was the right move, and IF he feels damaged he is not the player we all think he is going to be.

Last night wasn't his turn to shine. That's all.

When you think back to last season Bents was never fully fit, Biss ended up suspended / injured and caught Malaria, Sarr had injury issues as well and both of the last 2 played in the AFCON. Then Madds got injured and never recovered.

You just know that there will be a door that opens this season for Bergvall.

Even at the time, I think posted the same in the match thread.

We kept the slowest player on the pitch on, took off our only creative outlet on the pitch. Kept on Sarr, who has been in poor form, since coming back from AFCON with a back injury, he runs around a lot, works hard, but his distribution is poor and games just pass him by.

We could have easily have lost that match if they had taken their chances, taking off a player in midfield allowed them to over run us and for large parts of the game we was awful.

Not to mention we was playing a team from Azerbaijan, no disrespect to them. But our best option against them was to pin them in their own half and use VdV speed to cover the rear.

Well, I really wish we would play him and few others a lot more this season, as we have to many players that have let us down consistently over the last several months.

Especially after beating Villa 4-0 for the CL fight, then go and play like absolute donkeys for the remained of the season. With Son, Kulu, Maddison and others performances falling off a cliff.

good chance for him at Man U but failed to impress.
still think he will come good, and hope he will be able to put in a strong game soon

I think one of the key things Ange (like most managers) want to see from young players like Bergvall is good solid professional decision making. Ange knows what he can do with a football, he doesn't have to prove that. He needs to prove that in various circumstances he'll keep a cool head and do the right thing.

Uncharacteristically for him that wasn't the case today. And seemed to get told as much by Ange on the touchline.

All part of the learning curve.

I dont agree, the last 20min of the game it was all about control. He had a good corner that gave 3-0 and did well in two atacks. Who could blame him for trying a shot from 20meters

He lost the ball quite a few times and it was probably his worst sub appearance so far but it's not worth stressing over. He is a special talent and I hope he gets to start against Ferencvaros and shows what he can do.

That sort of performance is exactly why the 'Get Maddison out and Bergvall in' comments were so stupid, and just the usual fan comment that can be said without any repercussions, unlike the managers actions. 1) Maddison is a far superior player, he just needed time to play back into form 2) Bergvall is a talented player, but not yet ready for the pressure and rigours of PL football week in week out.

Not a slight on the player at all - He needs time, to mature and acclimatise to the PL and funnily enough that is exactly what Ange is giving him.....
