January Transfer Thread - it couldn't open and close any quicker

Erm. The last two years says ‘hello!’ :)

The last couple of years have been like watching a car crash in slow motion but I’ve become inured to the relentless disappointments since the 2nd minute of the CL final!

However the way we went from being heroes to zeros in the space of a few months in the spring of 2012 really was traumatic for me  I remember being at WHL when we thrashed Saudi Sportswashing Machine 5-0 not long after Redknapp won his court case and all the “mind the gap” stuff when we were 10 points clear of the Goons, only for it all to fall apart in the most humiliating fashion as not only did the gap get overturned but the team I hate 2nd most continued our FA Cup semi-final curse and then added insult to injury by fluking the CL final so we ended up demoted to EL

Good post. I do remember it well, I was being slightly facetious. I remember being so mad at Redknapp for taking his eye off the ball for England during that time, particularly as the club had backed him to the hilt during his court case! I lost all respect for him during that time.

I hear you. I was watching the 2012 CL final with some friends and my girlfriend in a pub, and remember just walking out in the rain when that final pen went in sulking not talking to anyone - just couldn't believe our luck. We were in the bloody title race for a while that season. fudge me, that was depressing.

Even back then we were hampered by the lack of backing (as well as the moves always being so late) in the transfer market....

Our only proper signings that summer were Scott Parker for £5.5m and Adebayor on loan and in typical Spurs fashion both were signed close to the end of the window with both of them missing the first game of the season.

We had a net transfer profit of over £30m that season - selling O'Hara, Keane, Palacious, Hutton, Crouch and Pavlyuchenko for fees. It's no wonder Harry was aggrieved at only being able to bring in a couple of players on their last legs in Saha and Nelson in January when we were in with a genuine shot at the title.

We still should've finished in the top three and I think we would've had the England manager job fiasco not come about but those at the top of the club shouldn't have been aiming for 'top 4' as they clearly were, they should've instead been aiming to win the league. Had we done that then even having failed to do so we wouldn't have slipped out of the top 3 and missed out on CL football.

This was the period when I realised ENIC had no real ambition or understanding of what they had in front of them. It has taken many years and I still don't think they really understand.

I was still too traumatised by my expensive day watching us get thrashed at Wembley Stadium in the FA Cup semi-final to watch the CL final anywhere other than at home and simply went to bed straight afterwards!

The doldrums of Villas-Boas (I recall the group of us who used to travel up to WHL together dwindling over the course of that turgid season) followed by Duhwood prepared me well for what we’ve endured these past couple of years.

That the handball rule which Sissoko was penalised for got amended the day after our CL final (much like how should the CL winners not finish in top 4 nowadays there’s a 5th spot reserved for them) just goes to show how utterly cursed our club is :( And to have a global pandemic hit just as we finally open our brand new stadium really adds insult to injury!

The handball rule was amended before the game, not after
It was the “silhouette” of the body rule that came in form that game onwards

The handball rule was amended before the game, not after
It was the “silhouette” of the body rule that came in form that game onwards

From what I’ve read the amended rule was not implemented in the CL final…

International Football Association Board (IFAB) technical director David Elleray added: "If the arms are extended beyond that silhouette then the body is being made unnaturally bigger, with the purpose of it being a bigger barrier to the opponent or the ball.

"Players should be allowed to have their arms by their side because it's their natural silhouette."

The IFAB has introduced new rules to the game as of the day of the Champions League final, including changes to the law on handballs, though they do not apply to the match between Tottenham and Liverpool.

The new rule states that a handball will be given if the ball “touches a player’s hand or arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger”, or “the ball touches a player’s hand or arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)”

But situations like Sissoko’s would not be penalised, as there would be no free kick or penalty if “the ball touches a player’s hand or arm directly from their own head, body, foot or the head, body or foot of another player who is near”.

Oh I agree
But they implemented it in the game
They even talked about it afterwards
Shambolic

Wow good memories there of the last three tears to get drunk on over the weekend. Makes me want to speculate what's next... Another players protest? Conte meltdown and walkout? Levy putting enticing cirque du soleil to relocate their hq to white Hart Lane.

Don't know much about this guy, other than that he's a super hard worker with a lot of talent.
He is a really interesting player in the fact that he came through as an attacking midfield player but seems to have done really well playing as a centre forward this season. Sounds like one of those players that can play multiple positions. His physical stature is also a good fit for the Premier League.

Interesting. Has he played in their CL games? If so, have you watched?

The CL final was supposed to be not included in that rule change, same with goalkeeper position for penalty.
You cannot start a tournament with one set of rules and then change them for the final.
Or so we were told.

But they 100% applied the rules as the new version
