Jan Vertonghen

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

The tackle after Caulker/Gallas fudged up was truly outstanding.

What Caulker/Gallas fudge up? That was 100% a Gallas fudge up! Caulker had a great game and did not put a foot wrong.
Vertongen was outstanding today!

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

Arguably the best left back at the club. No, I take that back, I think he is the best. He is much faster than I realised and he puts in a wicked cross with his left foot. No wonder he plays there for his country. He really does look the complete defender

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

And he professed his love for the club before he moved to us which is the second part of his already legendary status at the club. :D He will score goals too, which will only serve to heighten his reputation. I think he'll score next weekend against Manchester United. :)

Well I dont know - thats why I put a slash. I wont make the remark that people may think im racialist haha but I only get to look at it once so wasnt too sure.

Besides just out od interest im not sure why we are saying that any defender had a 'great' game as I dont think any defence getting a bit hammered by QPR is any good...

Errr...as much for his poise on the ball both carrying out of defence AND breaking fast with it as for his sterling bread & butter work.

First half he along with everyone else I dont think was good. I have also said that he was fantastic second half and has been our better player of the season so far, He will get better too.

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

His best game so far, outstanding.

Love that we got him and love that he seems to have adapted to the Premiership in no time. Long may it continue.

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

Verthongen is already at such level that deep down I'm starting to worry how long we can keep him. He's as good as they come, great vision, highly mobile, good in the air, rarely loses the ball when going forward - everything we can hope for in a CB. If he can form a good partnership with Kaboul/Caulker/Whoever in goal we are very sorted at the back.

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

If that does happen, we'll find someone else and we'll move on. We had Berbatov, he was an incredible player, he left and then we had Modric, an incredible player and he left and now we have Vertonghen, an incredible player and he left. Thankfully, at the moment we have both Vertonghen and Lloris and so to have 2 players of that calibre playing in our team is continuing the increase from last season, when we had Modric and VDV and if we keep doing that, and adding a top player then in the end we will have a team half full of top, top players achieving more than we have before, when we have a new stadium and so improved finances, and ultimately it can contribute to potential longer term success.

For the moment, I'm just going to enjoy watching a player of Vertonghen's calibre playing for our club and hope that he stays for as long as possible. In hindsight, I'm amazed that we had a relatively clear path towards signing him and that he was so keen to join us. :O He could have played for Barcelona and wouldn't be looking out of place.

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

Reading an article about Vertonghen and I'm pleased to see that he isn't injury prone. In the article taken from http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...-hotspurs-new-signing-adds-to-the-team/page/3 it says that he only missed 18 games out of the past 170 for Ajax, not bad. The article also praises his aerial ability, great passing skills and a winning mentality, all those combined he was a bargain for a fee of £9.6m even if that is the highest fee that our club has paid out for a defender.

Only a little bit more than we paid for Ben Thatcher!

Caulker's clearing header was appalling. Gallas was caught on his heels but maybe that was because he expected Caulker to clear it more comfortably than he did.

I've been delighted with what I've seen so far but let's not get carried away. It doesn't feel like it because we have rarely played well, but we haven't really played a team yet that I'd say was better than us and therefore really tested out defence with constant pressure. If Verts can carry this sort of performance against the likes of Utd, Chelsea, City and Arsenal THEN we can say he is playing at such a level.

Yeah, you can't lay all blame at Gallas. Caulker either committed a criminally bad clearance or worse meant to pass to Gallas. Personally I'm hoping it was a bad header as trying to pass it out from that position is pretty idiotic. Still, good display from Caulker otherwise.
