Ingerlund

I can't believe Hodgson stuck Kane out on the right lol. I mean if you're gonna stick him on one side then make it the left where we know he can cut in and score from.

A fudging joke of a lineup.

-----------------Hart
Walker--Smalling-Cahill--Rose
---------Dier-------Henderson
-Sturridge----Alli-----Lalllana
----------------Kane

Keep it as Spurs/Liverpool/Southampton as possible

The *problem* with all these formations, is that they don't include Rooney.

It's a sad fact that he'll be picked for at least the 1st two matches (then maybe dropped if we are utter brick)

Do any of you guys remember around 10 years ago when English coaches started trying to play a 433? They ended up with either a 451 or a team with three strikers who had no idea what they were doing. That is what Hodgson has done in trying to cram Rooney and Vardy into the same team, it's another example of square pegs for round holes. Rooney functioned as neither a playmaker nor a striker and it screwed us in both attack and defence.

The number of times I saw Milner completely unsure of who to mark is unsettling and it's down to this weird formation and having strikers in wide position's. We had no press from the front, because of how the front line was setup and we had no goal threat from Kane and Vardy who scored goals for fun this past season. We looked better when we actually had players in their natural roles. Is it any wonder that Alli looked his best when finding the ball in the middle between the lines? Or how about some genuine trickery and pace from Sterling and Lallana? Wheelchair looked decent in his time on the field, though when replacing an unimaginative Milner it's hard not to leave an impression.

I'd go for.

-------------------Hart---------------
Walker--Smalling-Cahill--Rose
-------------------Dier---------------
------Wheelchair-----Alli----------
--Lallana-----Kane---Sterling--

Vardy should have been subbed off the moment they went down to ten, he is pretty much a one trick pony, ie on the counter. Against sides that sit like tonight he's neutred.

He looks completely out of his depth in a England shirt ( imo).
I agree, but it was not the game for him with a packed defence, he needs space!
Thought Kane was equally as poor as Vardy. Ali was OK but too deep.

Wiltshere was excellent when he came on and Sterling was much better than Vardy in that role on the left.

Roy got it wrong and he looked like he he knew it.

Is he fat and immobile enough now to go in goal?

Vardy's performances for a possession side show exactly why forwards like Berahino wouldn't work for us.

I dont agree in the case of Berahino. He has the ability to drop off and fire shots at goal from outside the box as he has proved in the past, also he is better on the ball than you seem to give him credit for. He is nothing like Vardy.

THing is that's international football, Vardy won't find the open spaces he finds in the EPL because no international team plays that way.

If we stick with the idea that someone plays right and someone plays left and you hold we'll win nothing, modern football is about fluidity and players must have the ability and intelligence to adapt to each situation. Last nights team had too many players who could not do this, I do not think Vardy or Sterling have brains to play that type of game, Milner is just a grafter and makes Henderson look like Zidane.

4231
Hart
Walker Cahill Smalling Rose
Wheelchair Dier
?? Alli Sterling
Kane

This one for me, with maybe Sturridge in 3 behind (basically any of Sturridge, lalana, Barkley and sterling for the two places next to Ali, whoever's showing the best form.

Rooney would be a decent sub for Wheelchair, when the alternative is Milner or Henderson I really don't think he's any worse there! Obv that is horses for courses, if we need to defend more then the Liverpool cloggers, but in a more balanced game Rooney could offer something.

The strategy, as far as I could make out, was to keep Alli and Kane as far apart as possible. Why, I'm not so sure.
