What about his for a radical suggestion. Pick players to play in their usual positions. The solution is simple for Hodgson if he has the balls to do it. Drop Rooney.

I think everyone needs to forget about hoping Rooney will be dropped. You don't take your country captain to an international tournament final with the intention of leaving him on the bench.

Or using the older terminology, he could play the left outside forward position.
If Rooney really has to play, I'd put him at no.9 instead of Kane. Start one, and bring the other on when the game is stretched. Let them duke it out to see who's best. And if we're under the cosh from a possession team, bring on Vardy for balls over the top.

Fair enough, I stand corrected. But I don't think that is Roy's plan at least for the first 2 games.

No doubt Hodgson really bought in the golden generation crap. He brought Joe Cole to Liverpool that time long after he was finished as a player and tired to hype up his ability again.

It will be Rooney instead of Vardy.

They could play Rooney at number 10, with Alli on the left (he's played there for us at times, swapping with Eriksen).

If England are gonna play 5 Spurs boys, they might as well line up 4231.

------------------hart
walker-----smalling----cahill-------rose
----------dier----henderson (did he even make the squad? I wasn't paying attention)
-----vardy------rooney-----alli
-----------------kane

That'd be my team. Vardy would get up alongside/past Kane in attack, just run back to the right when the team defends. Rooney and Alli could swap a fair bit.

that's what I'd do pretty much, but Rooney would be fixed left

First off, we can only benefit from all our players being in the side. More experience. More confidence. More knowledge. No down side for me.

The team?

With the people he has there, this would be my 11 to start Saturday. Bear in mind I think Woy is going to end up playing Rooney and have a 'Robson Italia 90' moment, but until then, this is what he should do IMO.

Hart

Walker
Smalling
Stones
Rose

Dier
Wilbrick

Rashford
Ali
Sterling

Hazza

Bring on the likes of Rooney, Vardy, Sturridge, Barkley and Llama for the change of needed.

I'd start Rashford simply because he can play across that three, has great versatility, is young enough to be fearless and will work harder tracking back than Sturridge (who would be a great option off the bench).

Wilbrick is a controversial one I know, and I personally despise the toe-rag, but I think next to Dier from deep he would be very very effective.

IF I was FORCED to accommodate Rooney, I would start him deeper beside Dier and if it was a flat-out failure, switch him with Alli in the hole. Bear in mind, I think Rooney is a great player BUT the time has come to move on, and if we want to think of 2018, we need to make the shift now and start slowly transitioning him out. IMO.

I just hope Poch gives our boys a proper break now. 4 or 5 weeks. They will be fcuked both mentally and physically first after how we ended out season and now this national embarrassment.
