Ingerlund

Can we safely assume those that didn't get minutes tonight are first choice players?

Hart, Walker, Cahill, Rose, Alli, Kane and possibly Vardy plus Smalling and Dier (from tonight's players). The rest of the team builds around them.

Bertrand likely to be ahead of Rose.

Is Milner some kind of football dementor?

Surely his only reason for existence must be to suck all the excitement out of a football match.

I was quite depressed to not see us try to strangle the life out of the game at 2-0. I guess part of that is down to having players on the pitch that know they are scrapping for a starting spot and not doing the simple things (Barkley), but all the same, it was bad that we let Australia have so much of the ball.

Personally, I'm not 100% in favour of either of Hodgson's "systems", although an underperforming Wheelchair in both games did cause problems. Aside from Wheelchair, Drinkwater hasn't really done himself any favours in either of these games whilst Townsend in a single cameo has made himself look indispensable when we are looking to counter. What's the deal with Sturridge?

Townsend offers something different. I think he will go as an impact sub.

With Delph out, only two players will be dropped for the final 23. The trio of Milner, Drinkwater and Wheelchair are hardly inspiring and if only one is necessary then Rashford's chances must be looking good, especially with Sturridge's injury.

Drop them all and take 22 - we'd be far better off.

Of those three you know that he'll bring Wheelchair even though he's hardly played this season. I'm not a big fan of Milner nor Drinkwater but at least they are playing week in and week out which should stand for something.

I saw my first England game in 1961 v Mexico and have never seen an England team with such awful centre-backs as the current squad, none of them seem to read the game or have any composure. Unfortunately we don't appear to be developing any, this is born out by players like Dann and Morgan being rated as good when they are merely average.

Tend to agree with you, defending seems to be a lost art in todays game.

I think "average" is generous.

I always remembered what Bill Shipwright told me when I was a kid. "Stay in the middle and stay on your feet" someone should tell Smalling.
I was always taught "The ball or the man gets past you. Never both"

That and "Kick him hard enough early doors and you'll have half a second on him all match. If he forgets his place put him in the stands again"

I agree. Might be an argument for playing Dier at centre back but he's probably to good in the middle to be dropped back.

The English national side is a bit of a state but at least the golden generation is nearly extinct. Just need it to sink in with the media and Hodgson that Rooney is now an old man and one who will never win anything with England . Then we can finally move past all that crap.

England under 21's are currently 1-0 against France in the final of the Toulon cup. I do not see what the fuss is about Watmore, he seems to not know what to do with the ball.
