Hugo Lloris

But you can rotate midfielders, you can give midfielders game time from the bench, you can easily give them a month off and bring in someone else if they have a drop in form. If Bentaleb turns out to not be good enough we play Sandro, Capoue, Dembele etc instead.

Will we have the same possibilities with Butland?

Well, I'd like to think so.

In the Europa League, FA Cup, Carling Cup instead of playing Friedel (who should retire and become a coach of ours), you play the very promising and highly rated England international in Jack Butland. Of course this is if we go ahead and purchase him whilst having Lloris which won't happen.

Based on what exactly?

One of the most important abilities for a keeper is to perform consistently over time under pressure at the highest level. We've seen Paul Robinson go from "England's number 1 and a super signing" to Championship football. We've seen Gomes go from arguably the best goalkeeper in the league in 09/10 to being third choice for us. Yet, you feel confident that Butland is not only top class, he is ready and experienced enough to be first choice for us. Based on what?

I agree in terms of those important abilities. But like I said above to El Guep. You can tell when someone has the ability. Just like you could tell with Courtois and why Chelsea paid all that money for him, just like you can with ter Stegen and why he is the best goalkeeper in the world, just like with de Gea when he become one of the most expensive goalkeepers of all time, same with Neuer, I could go on. You can tell with Butland.

There were always question marks over Robinson though. He was NEVER good at claiming crosses, even at Leeds. His distribution has always been a big factor in what made him so good. His reflexes were okay, would pull of a worldy every now and then. But he was never going to be anything more than a 'Spurs' goalkeeper. Same with Gomes, each to their own really but he just wasn't arguably the best keeper that year at all. He had a few good games at the end of the season, but then again that is when it really mattered and he performed. Fact of the matter is, he was **** the previous year and then **** the following year.

No, I think Butland, who oozes that same confidence Joe Hart did at that age, will become World Class. You become world class by playing games. YOU give confidence in the goalkeeper you believe will be the best and he will repay you if he's talented. How will anyone get experience if they are not getting games? If you're good enough, you're old enough.

But we were talking about possible direct Lloris replacements this summer? You claimed that should be Butland. Surely if he replaces Lloris as our first choice goalkeeper the above isn't what's going to happen. And the comparison to the Bentaleb situation becomes rather irrelevant?

Yes, and Joe Hart was treated the same way Stoke are treating Butland. By being out on loan to get regular game time at a level where every mistake won't be scrutinized, where pressure won't be piled on him, to gain experience.

It should be Butland. If he replaces him in the summer then it won't happen, you're right. Didn't Friedel extend his contract? If so, then it will be him continuing to play the cup games whilst Butland tears it up in the Prem for us.

Should go on loan to Southampton then, they have a young British side full of ridiculously talented footballers, they need a new keeper too as Boruc is dreadful.

I like him, he's a bit raw still but incredibly athletic, makes a lot of non orthodox saves which I like, I do wonder if he couldn't do with being a couple of inches taller mind.

Handanovic would be my pick right now though, despite his eccentricities.

He just never makes mistakes. He's like Oliver Khan except has the potential to be 10x better. Him and Coutois are easily the best keepers in the world right now and it's pretty hard to deny it. I like Handanovic, but I don't think he will ever make the next step

I'm certainly surprised that Courtois sin't starting for Chelsea, Jose has a mental block on the young un's, thats his best keeper and his best forward playing elsewhere.

Just seen the rumour that Mourinho is even looking to swap Courtois to get in Costa!!

The guy has lost it. His best goalkeeper being swapped and getting a striker in who isnt even as good as his best striker out on loan!

Is any of this serious or what? I'm struggling to tell.

What part of it are you struggling to come to terms with? I mean it doesn't particularly surprise me.

That Lloris really isn't all that he is cracked up to be? or that Courtois is leaving Chelsea?

That Jack Butland is the next Shilton/Banks/Jennings? Have you jumped off the Simon Mignolet bandwagon and hit your head on the floor or something?

I was never on the Mignolet bandwagon. Don't think he's in the top 5 goalkeepers in the league.

Mignolet is bottom 5.

Probable top 5: Lloris, De Gea, Cech, Begovic, Howard

Form fluctuates over the course of a season and whoever number 6, 7 etc are, they're not far off.
