Gareth Bale

Re: Gareth Bale

Errrrm surely that puts us in a stronger position
Levy: were not selling bale this season but if you want first refusal next season were gonna need a player of yours this season ;)

First refusal is flimflam. Basically says that if a bid for a player is accepted, any bid from Madrid of the same value would also have to be accepted.

That first bit is what frightens people away from doing first-refusal deals with Daniel 'verbal agreement' Levy. :D

Re: Gareth Bale

So, if he puts in 50 million quid, it would have to entail a rise in the price of the club of 90+ million pounds for him to earn a profit out of it. Now, you have to ask yourself: did our last run in the CL raise the value of the club by 90 million pounds? To do that, you'd have to look at the difference between pre-CL and post CL sponsorship deals, the kit deal, our TV allocations, and our prize money earnings, and try to figure that out. MY gut says yes, although my gut is not necessarily the most mathematically-inclined.

that is the crux of the argument, yes - Im prepared to go on gut instinct alone as well as i don't quite fancy delving any deeper

where's JimmyB when you need him?

Re: Gareth Bale

Imagine if all clubs had to start from scratch and all had to work within the same financial limits. We'd boss it and Chelsea would be screwed.

we are Tottenham....we would still find a way to screw it up

In lieu of an-indepth financial analysis by our resident expert, then, allow me to summarize the argument thus: we don't have to sell Gareth Bale if our next CL run raises the value of the club by more than 90 million pounds.

Er....:-k

Re: Gareth Bale

No, we are not. I travel a lot, and most of the time my Spurs shirt goes utterly unnoticed, even in football crowds full of Chelsea, Liverpool, United and Arsenal jerseys. The few times it is noticed all people seem to know about Spurs is that Bale plays here. Very few people know about us, can name our squad or can remember our history.

Outside of the UK, I suspect we are almost unknown. The only reason we're getting recognized a little more than we were for most of the PL era is because of that CL run, and the subsequent marketing campaigns launched by the club aimed at North America and developed markets.

I travel a lot for work (at least once a month) and I have to say that Spurs ARE a well known team. I speak with blokes who are Greek, German, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, Ukrainian, American to name but a few and they have always heard of, and in some cases follow, Spurs. I have given away so many pin badges its unreal!

not the same in Asia.

Re: Gareth Bale

We need to keep him and reward him with qualifying for the Champion's League the following season. If we sell him I think that Levy will take the pragmatic approach and sink the transfer money into the stadium rather than strengthen the squad. No Bale, no top four next season and I think Levy knows that.

Spurs star Gareth Bale vows: I’ll never get carried away with my own success

Gareth Bale is determined to avoid a “downward spiral” by staying grounded - and he has highlighted the importance of his team-mates and Andre Villas-Boas after his stellar season.

It has been a season to savour for Gareth Bale, who has won a glut of awards, been hailed as “the best player in Europe” by Zinedine Zidane and is now being coveted by the biggest clubs on the continent.

An international star who is being valued in excess of £80million, the 23-year-old has the world at his feet and it would perhaps be understandable to see his ego growing with his reputation.

However, the modest Welshman has little intention of getting carried away with his personal success and accolades, and he insists he will continue to keep his feet firmly on terra firma.

“Obviously it’s great to win the awards but I think you look on that at the end of your career – what you’ve won individually and team-wise,” Bale told Spurs TV. “It’s obviously great in the moment, you enjoy the moments, but you never get too carried away. You just keep focused on the job in hand.

“The boys and my family and friends always keep me on the ground. I just come in every day as normal like nothing’s happened. I get my head down and work and do the best I can for myself and the team, which is the most important thing.

“I think as soon as you lose sight of that then you’re in a downward spiral, and I know in myself that I can’t do that and that I never will do that.”

To underline the point, Bale is keen to highlight the contribution that his team-mates and his head coach, Andre Villas-Boas, have made to his stunning campaign, which yielded a magnificent 26 goals and 10 assists for Tottenham.

“It’s been an amazing season for me individually but I think it’s been a great team effort all season,” he said. “We’ve been working hard.

“Obviously Andre came in at the start of the season and changed the way we play and I think we’ve adapted very well to that.

“We’ve grown as a team all season and I think that’s helped me individually, and that’s why I’m able to play so well and get my awards, which has been a fantastic year for me. It’s been great but we just need to kick on now.

“Everyone was excited about Andre coming in. He’s a young manager, he’s got a great past at Porto – maybe not so much at Chelsea but obviously given time, like he has been this season, he’s shown what a good manager he is. It’s been a very exciting time for the club.

“Obviously he’s tried his new tactics, his new style of play with us. Sometimes it does take a bit of time just to get used to it, and at the start of the season I think it was a bit difficult – but as the season’s gone on we’ve got used to it, we’ve adapted and got stronger and stronger.

“He [Villas-Boas] has helped me in all aspects of my game. In training we’ve been working on things that I can do in games, and in games he’s given me the confidence to do what I want and do what I do best, which is a massive thing for a player.”

Bale’s phenomenal performances have made him a marked man, but he feels the extra attention has helped him to improve.

“Have I noticed a different approach from opposing players? Definitely, there are players now who are following me around the pitch everywhere I go,” he said.

“It does get difficult but it’s also a challenge for me to adapt my game and to find space again, even whilst being marked, and I’ve been able to do that again this season.

“It’s been difficult at times but I think that’s then upped my game and taken me to another level again.”

And it is not just opposing players who give Bale special treatment.

“I get more abuse than anyone when I go away from home!” he said. “You get used to it. I suppose it’s a compliment in a way, that they don’t want you on the ball, they don’t want you doing anything good, they try to put you off.

“It’s all good fun and games and I enjoy it. I like proving the other fans and the other teams wrong.”

Gareth Bale quashes exit rumours as he reveals: I love playing for Andre Villas-Boas

Gareth Bale has dropped his biggest hint yet that he will stay at Tottenham.

Bale has been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid and his agent last week said the Football of the Year would listen to offers from the Bernabeu.

But the 23-year-old Welshman, who is under contract at White Hart Lane until 2016, has revealed he loves playing under manager Andre Villas-Boas and believes Spurs have an exciting future with the Portuguese in charge.

“He has helped me in all aspects of my game,” Bale told Spurs TV. “In training we have been working on things that I can do in games and in games he has given me the confidence to do what I want and do what I do best, which is a massive thing for a player.

“Everyone was excited about him coming in. He is a young manager and he has got a great past at Porto. Maybe not so much at Chelsea but given time, like he has been this season, he has shown what a good manager he is. It has been a very exciting time for the club.

“He has tried his new tactics, his new style of play with us. Sometimes it does take a bit of time just to get used to it and at the start of the season I think that was a bit difficult. But we adapted and got stronger and stronger.”

Standard Sport revealed last month that Bale has already agreed a new £130,000-a-week contract but Madrid president Florentino Perez will still try to test Daniel Levy’s resolve with a huge bid this summer.

Bale won the Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards this season but says he is not getting carried away by individual honours.

“You just keep focused on the job in hand,” he said. “It has been an amazing season for me but it has been a great team effort. We have grown as a team all season and I think that helped me individually and that is why I am able to play so well and get my awards.”

Bale also admitted he enjoys the extra attention he receives from opposition fans. “I get more abuse than anyone away from home,” said the Wales international.

“You get used to it. I suppose it’s a compliment, that they don’t want you doing anything good, they try to put you off. It’s all good fun and games.”

Meanwhile, Spurs are set to name Franco Baldini as their technical director after the Italian left his post as general manager of Roma.

Re: Gareth Bale

Got to say, well done to the lad for those comments- the biggest danger to his career progression isn't so much that he isn't playing champions league football week in week out, its that he gets carried away by his prodigious talents. There have been far too many examples of players starting to believe their own hype in this country to their detriment, so its good to hear these comments from gareth.

But its clear at the moment he has his head screwed on right and is just focusing on continuing to develop as a player, and as part of a team. He isn't the finished article by any means, but if he continues to develop as he has been he has a great future ahead of him.

Re: Gareth Bale

I love him even more after those comments, he is one good lad and credit must go to his family for how they have brought him up

Re: Gareth Bale

doesn't actually say anything about staying here or leaving though does he.

good comments all the same
