Fraser Forster

Great. He made two or three top saves. However, his inability to read key moments, or be able to actually play football from the back, is costing us. Before the set-piece which led to the goal, he tries to prevent a corner that wasn't one and spaffs the ball up into the air dangerously. He also pinged a couple of awful passes centrally which we got away with (one at his redemption).

He is a solid back-uop goalkeeper if you need someone in the League Cup. If you need a proper keeper to come in and be commensurate with your keeper and the system played, Fraser is not your man. No-one in the side looks comfortable passing to him/involving him...
And yet Dear Ange insists on him trying to play out from the back. Maybe, just maybe he shouldn’t do that.

Hmmmm.... If the manager wants his team to play a certain way then he needs to get them playing a certain way. You can't really suddenly go long ball because your main keeper is injured. The recruitment department at the club need to instead do their job and ensure that the back up keeper as well as the first choice keeper is suited to the manager's style of football.

Why not?

You can’t just have one way of playing.

We did go long a few times against Bournemouth. Unsurprisingly the ball mostly just came straight back.

It's not just Forster though. Dragusin, and then later in the game no Davies either. Full backs and midfield looking tired. Playing through a press with that as the starting point is always going to be a struggle.

I don't think there is an easy or obvious solution right now.

Yes, but whilst we literally can’t do that, he needs to change temporarily.

And undermine the entire (current) football philosophy we are attemping to bed into the club from academy onwards? BTW, our academy goalkeepers are all infinitely better at this style than Forster. Sorry to say, Forster again shows up a weakness in our recruitment i.e. settling for a 'decent veteran for the odd cup game' versus actually making sure we have a back-up who is more adept to our style and has some experience. We took a punt not taking it seriously and lost.

It doesn’t undermine anything, and the academy doesn’t have to change the way they play.

It’s just a bit of pragmatism.

In our PL games he has to prioritise and maximise points.

If the academy keepers are better at this why didn’t he start one of them instead?

He's said he doesn't do the 'P' word, so that's what it is. I will admit to frustration myself, especially today where I felt a couple of other types of change would've actually given us the chance to blow them away, but...

Keely is on loan, Gunter is 19 and just fit again as I understand it, and I think Forster as a senior would be seen as being fudged off were Ange to do it. I think there's an element of youth protection too.

Not doing pragmatism is enough for me on its own.

That’s an incompatible attitude with professional sport.

Fair enough.
Why is it, though, that since Poch we have seemed to hire managers with exceptionally specific ways and methods?

I would love to know the facts behind Slot deciding not to come here...

I think everyone has their preferred ways, but not all are so dogmatic in how they apply them.

From the tiny sample of closely watching the 4 of them in recent GK warmups, Gunter already looks head and shoulders above Forster, Austin and Whiteman in terms of shot saving and claiming crosses under pressure (the two things they practice).

When have you seen Guntet in the warm ups?

Because our team is extremely unsuited to long ball football. We don't have the sort of players that will go and win the second ball.

Not sure I agree with that, but going long isn’t just about build up, it’s about getting the ball safe and not playing high risk passes in and around the box.

Get it safe, win the ball back later, give the opposition the chance to make mistakes in their third.
