Eric Dier

I wonder if there was more to his injury against Monaco than we thought, I haven't seen him play so poorly all season. Maybe if Demebele was fit he wouldn't of played,or maybe it was just a bad day at the office to remind us he's not superhuman....
The boy is still uber young and learning his craft in centre mid, he is entitled to the odd off day

He's probably entitled to a rest too

Who do we replace him with? Monaco grew into the game when Bentaleb took his place: he isn't a DM. Dembele - don't want to see him wasted there. Alli can't do it. Veljkovic isn't staying around, apparently (although he'd be perfect cover if he was).

He was awful today but he's been magnificent all season. Put it down to experience and pick it back up next week.

I'm citing the fact that he has played almost every minute of the season as a contributor to his performance today. Personally I think there have been opportunities to rest him in Europa games and today on the hour mark I would have replaced him with bentaleb. the dm / double pivot player type seems to be open to debate but if we truly can't play anyone else there then we have about 5 other players competing to be his partner and he'd also be unable to fill in at CB in an emergency, which makes is light in that dept too. He's had a great season but i think it would be a concern if a player converts to a new position in pre season and is suddenly irreplaceable.

We have Fazio and Wimmer back there at CB, with Carter-Vickers coming through: ergo, we're not light there. However, it's definitely a concern that Dier has become so irreplaceable after just have a season at DM: it's both a good and bad concern to have, but it is present.

He was being pick-pocketed constantly in the second half; he (and the team0 looked like they needed and experience cool head in the middle to calm things down a bit when we were getting shaky and giving the ball away. I think even having Dembele next to him at that time might have helped.

Hopefully we can bounce back next week vs Soton

None of those players were on the bench today so I would have thought dier was the cover otherwise an out of position Davies? if dier was unable to play today who replaces him in your opinion?

I'd wager Toby would be moved up to DM and Fazio would slot in at RCB (seeing as Wimmer's left-footed): it's making the best of a bad situation, since Toby's played there before, and can still be on the pitch to school Jan and the rest of the defense to an extent. However, that's still an excessively sub-optimal solution, nd I do wonder why our bench was so light defensively today as well.

Not his best game but don't think he was as bad as is being made out. Considering alli, Carroll, eriksen and to a lesser extend rose, who were all playing around him were missing or pants for large parts of the game then it's not surprising really.

I thought he was just as bad as is being made out and possibly even worse. His use of the ball was poor and he was sluggish in possession and got caught on the ball on numerous occasions. I thought he and Carroll were our two worst players on the day.

I agree with you, but it doesn't mean he should be immune from criticism. If he plays badly then it's far for people to call it out.
I think the criticism should come if he is playing consistently badly, rather than over one game.

And in the same vein (and this is not directed at you, Finney, just a general statement) I don't like it when people say someone was brick, if they had one bad game out of a dozen. Just say "he was in poor form for this match" rather than having to label a player with expletives.

I see people writing stuff about Eric Dier, and I don't like it.

Having finally got round to watching MotD2 (basically 'cos I was sulking), it seems as though it was a real game of two halves. In the first, we dominated, were allowed to play nice football, and had some good chances. In the second half, Saudi Sportswashing Machine came out and upped their game. We didn't. Perhaps the cumulative effects of the high press and UEFA games meant that our young players couldn't go up a gear in the last 20-30 minutes, in response to Saudi Sportswashing Machine subs with fresh legs.

Either way, I don't see anything to worry about. Every team has a bad patch -- while it's infuriating that we're Spursing it up and failing to capitalise on the misfortune of other teams, at least it means that we've not lost touch. In some seasons, the Sky 4 would have been out of sight by now.

Let's just enjoy this season. I reckon our kids have a few surprises left up their sleeves, and that they have the character to bounce back.

“We are very pleased because he has started to play in a position that was his real position,” Pochettino said.

“When we decided he should start to play as a holding midfielder it’s because we saw he had the qualities to play in that position.

“He got into the national team as a holding midfielder. Maybe in the future his best position is centre midfield or maybe it’s centre defence or full-back.

“But he is very young and very comfortable in the position he is playing.

“If we analyse him, today he is one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League.”

I actually think the injury to Vertonghen has made Eric Dier the most important player who we need cover/competition for in our back 6...
