Eric Dier

The only negative I saw was that it looked as though his touch let him down a few times.
Fairly early in the first half, Dele Alli was free on the edge of the box, got the ball fed across to him (by Barkley? Sterling?) and would have just had the keeper to beat if his first touch hadn't deserted him.

Annoyingly, that was approximately a minute after I'd told my mate how good he was. Thankfully he came good later!

Big match, huge build-up, strange Wembley crowd. I think he dealt with it all pretty well -- never mind the fact that he's a 19yo from League One!

Actually, he had to slow up, and made no contact. It might have turned out better, but I feel it was one of those moments. Sport, eh ?

Later in the game Rooney got his, frequently he would fail. Sport, eh ?

All of this about Dele Alli in a thread about Eric Dier. Sport fans, eh ?

It was Kane's pass from the left, to Alli. He just put a bit too much curl on it, due to his awesomeness. So it dipped and Alli missed it completely which just shows that his mind leapt ahead of him that one time... surely he would have got some sort of touch any other day, but to be through on goal for England he just failed to touch the ball at all! But of course, he didn't let that bother him and put in a great performance.

It was notable England played 451 without the ball. Rooney Sterling and Barkley all in a line with Dier and Alli when France had possession.

And then in general Dier hung back, covered for Stones and was a lot deeper than Alli, who got into the box lots of times, which was great to see, just like Spurs.

I was talking about Dier, not Alli. I thought that Dier's touch was a bit clumsy on a couple of occasions. Still a good debut however.

The moment you are talking about, I had thought the pass was from Kane? (although I could be wrong). I think on that occasion Alli was thinking about what he was going to do next and took his eye off the ball.

Sorry mate -- must have just read Dele's thread and got confused!

Watched the match at a mate's place on a small TV with really crappy reception, so didn't realise he'd missed the ball. As Whiffler insinuated, it's those half chances that make the difference between a wonder-strike and looking like a fool. Sport, eh? ;-)

Anyway, back to our square-headed (sort of) Portugeezer. Thought he did well in a position where, often, it's the mistakes that stand out rather than the good stuff. I appreciate his solidity.

Yes it was from Kane, a peach of a crossfield ball, but with it blowing a gale out there the ball more than likely swerved somewhat mid-flight making it that much more difficult to trap.

He is aggressive off the ball too. Any tough tackles on our players or confrontation he is right there giving it to the opposition. Verts also along with Alli and Mason and Bentaleb seem to be doing this. Gives us some much needed spirit we have lacked in the past.

Indeed, teams ae finding out that we are no longer a soft touch

I actually think now he is playing in HIS position

I agree. I called Dier as a DM at the end of last season. I just thought it would take a bit of time for him to adjust, but he looks a natural. An inverse Ledley (with two knees).

Those clowns on the Sun Fantasy Dream Team only gave him a 6 against West Ham, thought he deserved more, but then they also gave Lamela 5 against the Goons
