Togo peace shattered as Emmanuel Adebayor attacks coach's management style

Nelspruit, South Africa: The fragile peace between Togo coach Didier Six and his star player Emmanuel Adebayor has been shattered following the team's quarter-final loss to Burkina Faso.

In the aftermath of Sunday's 1-0 extra-time defeat, Adebayor rounded on the inexperienced Six in a no-holds-barred attack on the Frenchman's style of management.

"The coach was not a help! Me, I was on the pitch, so I couldn't do both jobs (coaching and playing).

"I tried to do my best, but it's true he didn't help us," the Tottenham striker told French radio station RFI.

Adebayor's sentiments were endorsed by Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa, who in a not-so-veiled criticism of Six's tactical nous said: "It's not up to the players on the pitch to make changes."

Six, when contacted by AFP, said that he wanted to have "a cool head before making an assessment" of Togo's Nations Cup campaign and the reaction from Adebayor and Agassa.

But he went on to point out that: "I took them (the team) to a place where they had never been before," referring to Togo's first appearance in a Nations Cup quarter-final.

Togo's build-up to the 2013 Nations Cup was dominated by a 'will-he-won't-he' saga involving Adebayor's participation following a series of run-ins with the Togolese Football Federation over matters of security, management and bonuses.

Adebayor told RFI: "If the Togo team is organised in the best way possible, I will alweys be there for it.

"It's true that I hear each time 'he's coming, he's not coming' -- but that's because there are lots of problems.

"If these problems are resolved, I will be there.

"You've seen that I give the best of myself. I speak in the dressing room, I'm a leader, I'm the captain."

Adebayor, who scored once in Togo's run to a first quarter-final appearance, added: "I'm disappointed, disgusted, beaten!

"We came here with the idea of winning the Nations Cup, to go to the final and, unfortunately, we were knocked out by Burkina. The disappointment is more than enormous."

Despite his attack on Six, he insisted that now was not the time to look for spacegoats.

"The most important thing is to return home quietly and tomorrow we'll see what everyone has to say."

On his international future, Adebayor said: "My international career is not stopping here. I've been in a Nations Cup quarter-final, now I think I've got the qualities to go to the semi-finals, and a final, and to win the title.

"But you know as well as I do that our management isn't really up to that.

"With our performance at this Nations Cup, the country, the president of the republic, the fans have seen what we are capable of. Now it's up to them to invest so that we can organise in the best manner possible."

Togo's Cup campaign came to an end when Jonathan Pitroipa broke the deadlock on 105 minutes to book the Burkinabe a semi-final meeting with Ghana in Nelspruit on Wednesday.

Defoe has been caught offside 16 times in 25 appearances, while Adebayor has been caught 7 times in 14. The worst players are Jelavic with 39 in 24, Benteke with 34 in 22 and Lukaku with 29 in 23.

Eh what...quietly?

They have both seem to have improved in that regard this season so at least it shouldn't be a (current or former) Spurs player who tops the league for getting caught offside for a change!

2009/10 - Defoe - offside 48 times (34 appearances)
2010/11 - D. Bent - offside 68 times (36 appearances)
2011/12 - Adebayor - offside 51 times (33 appearances)

Tottenham striker Adebayor vows to continue with Togo

Despite their exit from the Africa Cup of Nations to Burkina Faso on Sunday, the Spurs forward has said that he has no plans to retire from international football

Emmanuel Adebayor has committed his future to the Togo national team, despite their recent Africa Cup of Nations exit at the hands of Burkina Faso and his troubled relationship with the nation's football authorities.

The Tottenham striker has had a tense relationship with Togo's football governing body, which culminated in him threatening not to play in this year's Afcon tournament after accusing his country's bosses of being incompetent.

He was left out of the initial squad but was later brought back at the insistence of the head of the Togo Football Federation.

The 28-year-old also previously quit international football after a gun attack on the national side's team bus by Angolan militants ahead of the 2010 Afcon, but was persuaded to return later in the year.

However, despite his strained relationship with the Togolese authorities, Adebayor believes that football in his homeland is now heading in the right direction.

"I'm still young, so whenever my country needs me I'll be up for it because I've started something and I have to finish it," he told BBC Sport.

"We were stopped in the quarter-finals - maybe next time we'll be in the final and win it. So for me, it's never finished while I have the chance to win something."

The forward added: "It [the future] is looking good, with all the problems before coming to Afcon, and we've showed character, good face and showed we are a team that can play good football.

"I think I have done my best and physically I'm exhausted, but that's football. It's a tough one for all the players, for myself, for everyone, but life goes on."

Don't think we will see much of him on Saturday.

Ade might not have left Africa yet :(

Emmanuel Adebayor causes hotel mayhem in South Africa

Emmanuel Adebayor should have been his way back to Tottenham on Monday, with the chance that he could be available for the club's big game against Saudi Sportswashing Machine at the weekend. However, he's been causing mayhem in Africa instead.

The Togo team had been staying at the plush Winkler Hotel in Mpumalanga, South Africa. After getting knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations they had a flight booked to take them back to Togo but Adebayor told some of the squad not to take it because he was going to arrange a private jet for everyone.

The players therefore didn't check out and the hotel was unable to check people in who had rooms books for the night. The squad were supposed to leave on Monday but KickOff in Africa have spoken to a source who told them "Some players were in the parking lot [of the Protea The Winkler Hotel] when I arrived. CAF did nothing wrong. They informed the team in advance that if they lost they would leave the next day, but the team is still there at the hotel.

"Togo were supposed to leave with the plane that dropped Ghana on Monday, but I'm told that [Emmanuel] Adebayor asked the players to stay because they were going to take a private jet home. So instead of going to Johannesburg first they would fly straight home. The private jet didn't arrive and in the end the players are now stuck."

It's not known where the Tottenham striker is and whether he arranged for another private jet. Some players are stranded at the hotel and KickOff confirmed yesterday afternoon that they were still there. The owners of the premises have had to contact the police to see what they should do.

"It is causing big problems for the hotel. They say they are still waiting for confirmation about their flight so if nothing happens today then they are going to stay. But they are supposed to have been out by now so even the police are here to try to control the situation."

Adebayor sounds like he's left quite a situation behind in South Africa and should probably be expecting a big hotel bill to turn up soon.
