Eberechi Eze

Yeah. Sure.
That really makes it a thing.
But only in the minds of those who want it to be.
For you, on the other hand, it 'emerges in the press,' but you don't like it, so not only did it never happen, but it never could have, apparently. Look mate, do you know what? I don't actually care whether or not the words "we tried" have ever passed his lips (they have, though, most recently in terms of efforts to persuade Kane to stay) because the stink of repeated failure in the market hangs around Levy like the smell of a ripe Camembert, which is why everyone recognises the 'we tried' dig and knows exactly what it means (whether the sycophants forever rushing to his defence over the slightest hint of criticism accept it or not). That's politics—perception is everything!

My thoughts as well.
Boring. I hope that we have moved on to this clap trap of what it takes to be a spurs player. From what I’ve seen through my years

A) work hard with average to poor ability … get sold as a sympathetic hero

B) work hard and out perform your crap teammates .. get sold as a sympathetic villain

No such thing as a spurs player or playing the Tottenham way etc. it’s boring

Been on the pop again :)

What is this 'we tried' thing? I've seen a fair bit of this in the last few windows but it only comes from SPurs fans critical of Levy. I don't recall Spurs ever saying anything about how we tried for certain players. Stories emerge in the press, but that's the natural course of things. Spurs don't comment.
So there IS no classic 'we tried'

Surely stems from this? Over 20 years ago, but I remember it well. The fact it was even on the official site is madness.

Spurs made a late bid to persuade Brazilian superstar Rivaldo to move to White Hart Lane rather than AC Milan.
The World Cup star, who was available on a free transfer from Barcelona, met Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to talk about a possible deal.

Levy flew to Spain to try and convince him his future lay in the Premiership.

"This illustrates the high nature of our ambition and the fact that we prefer to operate away from the spotlight.

"It goes without saying that a player of Rivaldo's quality would have been a major boost to our squad.

"There are not many players of that class in the world game so, when the chance of signing was there, we had to move heaven and earth to try and bring him here.

"Milan pushed the boat out to extortionate money to get him and they made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

"We were pipped to the post but it shows we're going in the right direction."

"Unfortunately it didn't happen this time but the search goes on.

"People keep telling us we need a forward but they are being naive if they think we don't already appreciate that fact.

"We are well served in defence and midfield with possibly the best squad that this club has seen for some time."

Hoddle also revealed that Rivaldo wrote him a letter outlining why he chose not to join Tottenham.

Speaking after his team's 4-0 friendly win at Crystal Palace on Wednesday, Hoddle said: "We came so close to getting Rivaldo and I thought it was a touch of class for him to send us a terrific letter explaining his decision.

"I've never had that before when I've just missed out on a player.

"We were pipped to the post but it shows we're going in the right direction. It's 'have a go at Tottenham' time but we're not the only club not signing players."

Spurs midfielder Tim Sherwood was fined about £30,000 this week for publicly criticising the club's transfer policy.

A lot of people in here seemingly starting to count the chickens before they've hatched. I'm not even thinking about players coming or going until the club announce it.

This is not our 1st rodeo is it !!
I would love him to sign, been a fav of mine for a few seasons now
He just looks a Spurs player
I'm quite optimistic in general, I think that's good for me.

The level of unbridled naive optimism it would take to be chicken counting before an official confirmation for a Spurs signing would be both impressive and scary.

I think everyone probably celebrated the MGW signing before the actual signing, which turned out to not be an actual signing.

Indeed, was less than a month ago we was all expecting MGW to turn up for a medical and look what happened there.

We are nothing more than 'in talks' at this stage, which I've read about us being for a zillion players over the past few years. Nowhere near time to get excited....

I think as you get into the last couple of weeks of a transfer window, it's easier to feel that both clubs and the player themselves want to get business done. That transfer deadline itself becomes a reason why something probably will happen. We're almost into that period now.

It does get frustrating that through any regime at Spurs, this is the constant. We're always later than most other big clubs in getting business taken care of. It feels like an ENIC/Levy behaviour.

Yeah that's fair.

For balance of argument (and I haven't been that impressed with this window to date) had we got MGW in then things would have looked very different - that would have been two quality upgrades for the first team, plus the loan of Paulinha so that's 3 immediate first team players which would have given a very different feel. Then were we to get a Savinho later in the window, fantastic. But the reality of what's happened is that we are still behind where we should be timeline wise with signing players, especially when we have CL football. But it's just not going to change with ENIC is it....
